welcome! i’m proud of everyone for surviving these past two weeks and making it here. to celebrate, let’s argue about some videogames. we are back to losers, as the title indicates. voting is now open and will close in one week. overall brackets as they stand are here.
dragon quest 3
i was gonna pick sky odyssey but that’s because it keeps fooling me into thinking it’s sky kid, which i would vote over almost everything here. i barely started playing plane games that aren’t 2d and someday ill try sky odyssey but that day is not today. im stuck on the second level of ace combat 4. in a parallel universe people don’t ask what your sign is they ask your dragon quest 3 personality quiz results and thats why its my vote
warioware
my shoulder feels ripped out of the socket every time i played ici. warioware is peak daphny. quality minigame collections are actually super fucking hard to do and i got rejected from a snob livejournal community for loving warioware. but like ITS THE BEST OF ITS KIND!!! HAVE YOU PLAYED FEEL THE MAGIC? MORE LIKE FEEL THE SHIT
mario 64
mario 64 isnt covered in fucking kojima slime. like 3 has the ladder scene i guess and without it we wouldn’t have the best this is how you dont play FUCKING EVER
if you haven’t seen it just go to the final boss fight where he doenst use cqc! fucking hilarious. amazing. im good at mario 64 though and nothing can beat me being good at a game
riven
i still need to play riven but i will never fucking play a survival horror game so easy peasy
rondo of blood
i will totally play a survival horror game if i can jump and whip and dont have to worry about ammo. rationing sucks im playing a videogame not doing night porter roleplay
dues ex
i haven’t played either of these games and i never will but MALKAVIAN MOD MALKAVIAN MOD!!! go in and go in and go in like my three daughters and GET PILLS against my orders
bubble bobble
wow this one is hard because im good at BOTH these games, and i played them side by side with some of my FAVORITE people…the turbo take off in crazy taxi where you hit one trigger and then another to TAKE OFF LIKE CRAAAAAZY is one of my favorite dreamcast things EVER. it actually might be one of my favorite controller-input feelings next to doing the move in TMNT 2 on snes that kills all footclan in one hit. the way you hold your thumb over both buttons cuz you have to hit them NOT QUITE at the same time was my first galaxy brain controls experience. turbo boost take off in crazy taxi invokes that. BUBBLE BOBBLE IS BUBBLE BOBBLE THOUGH. i want a vintage binder from a bubble bobble cabinet full of power up speculation notes SO BAD.
donkey kong 94
ugh there’s so many you dont have enough bullets games on here! its as bad as dark souls games on the other list lol. also resident evil doesnt take full advantage of the super gameboy hardware and how can i get behind anything like that?
Dragon Quest III
It’s a Dragon Quest! It’s one of the best ones too!
Silent Hill
I don’t usually find the horror genre works for me in video-games or movies.
They usually feel silly. Silent Hill is the rare example of one that actually works.
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
One of my favorite Castlevania games.
Rondo!
Deus Ex
It was delightful when you get to the base and the characters you talk to actually talk about what you’ve done so far.
It’s also got big fun levels with multiple ways to play through them.
when you click vote for dragon quest 3 i want you to imagine cutting a ps2 slime controller in half and hearing it cry. with a ps2 re4 chainsaw controller
Most of these I have no super strong opinions on, except DQ will get my vote because of who i am as a person. The one I want to see go all the way is Crazy Taxi though.
i’m voting for all the survival horror games. sorry rondo. sorry riven. i think this is the second time i’ve felt like apologizing to these games?
kinda recently got to play bubble bobble with @slime. it’s wild how the rules keep changing, but it also comes with some cruelly mean-spirited challenges. feeling that’s part in making it memorable though?
the art and environments in ico does stuff for me that none of the sequels quite manage. it’s a mood that i’ll always be super fond of, tho i think the game for the most part is just that, a mood piece. warioware was something i obsessed with until i couldn’t really stand it anymore? i overindulged.
you know what, on mgs3 vs yahhooo jumping man, for once i’m gonna go with the jumping man. mgs3 is closer to a real stealth game than mgs1&2 and i actually don’t like it. the maps in the previous games feel like elaborate clockwork puzzles, movement and designs are strict but there’s tons of variables and possibilities. mgs3 opens this up, forces you to observe more and hide more and take it slowly more. and i’m having less of a good time with that.
i replayed sm64 a dozen times as a kid until i started looking into glitches and skips and somehow i never really tired of it. it just holds up really well as this thing of pure movement.
i’ll probably never play breath of the wild cause i’ll never own a switch, but i’ll try to play deus ex soon so i can cast my vote based on wether i like it or not. also have sky odyssey ready and am excited to play it
Anyone that was at the first ButtCon should remember Resident Evil is in fact the best game of all time. Shout outs to @anothersphere where ever they are.
I was lucky to acquire Dragon Quest 3 not long after its release. A younger neighborhood kid who was friends with my brother apparently overheard me talking about how much I was looking forward to the game’s release. He asked for it for Christmas and got it, but soon realized that it was not a typical action game and lost interest. So I traded him several games for it. (I gave him a very good deal.)
ICO will always win just about any contest for me.
Silent Hill will always win just about any contest for me, unless it goes up against ICO.
I’m glad I get a chance to vote for Bubble Bobble this time after voting against it before. I might have already shared a photo of my copy in one thread or another. It looks like this:
You gonna vote for the game that pressures you into participating in Kojima’s male gaze, or the game that would rather entice you through your own curiosity into gazing at the sun with the reward of cross-dimensional careening through the clouds? Wahoo-yippee > CQC
Sky Odyssey forever, it’s the closest a game has got to fulfilling the wish of being able to like psychically suspend a freshly-painted model plane in front of my face, force pushing it through the air with telekinetic tweaks to pitch and yaw while running round the neighbourhood.
In this age of mega-corporate ridesharing, I would like to show solidarity with Crazy Taxi, but in Bubble Bobble you fight a subterranean pissed-up priest called Super Drunk.
something fun i was thinking of that would take an insane amount of work but might be cute is after the whole thing ends going back and tallying up who voted for what to match sbers with each other according to compatibility of taste. this would be especially interesting and rich as a data source given that it accounts for much finer gradations and nuances of aesthetic priorities rather than just comparing top 10s, since it also includes choosing between two games you don’t love but finding some aspect of one worth championing over the other
Sky Odyssey
vs. Dragon Quest III
Sky Odyssey for me. It deserves the hype. Also, I’ve never played DQ3.
Ico
vs. WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!
Ico and this is really hard.
Super Mario 64
vs. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Super Mario 64 because of what it did for 3D platformers and how much I enjoyed it. MGS2 would win if it were that instead.
Riven
vs. Silent Hill
Silent Hill all day.
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
vs. Resident Evil (2002)
Gonna go with RE2002 here, but I would probably vote Rondo of Blood had I actually played it as a kid.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
vs. Deus Ex
Deus Ex is probably the most impressive game I’ve ever played.
Crazy Taxi
vs. Bubble Bobble
Crazy Taxi, but it’s gotta be the Naomi version.
Resident Evil 4
vs. Donkey Kong '94
RE4
Edit: We should all probably reflect on the games we voted AGAINST and play/quick review them at some point.
I’ve just resolved to always vote for the more cerebral, restrained, dark, gritty, PC-esque choice in each matchup, to balance out daphnyesque colorplosion that seems to appeal to most people here. I will old man until the end of my days, which are coming quite quickly, on account of being an old man
