so what the hell is up with the Guardians today:

hottest of hot takes incoming, hating on MGS4, FF and Xenoblade?

Press-X joke and praising Journey, Firewatch, Ico & SotC… let’s call it a lukewarm take then

Can’t players be trusted to take part in stories?

no, they can’t

maybe you could be our Last (SB) Guardian :tarothink:

If you think cutscenes are bad, wait till you see what’s between them!

surprised ian bogost didn’t write this

kind of rich to praise firewatch for immersion when it opens with a sick lit text adventure vignette

if you work for the guardian surely you can, like, email ron gilbert about maniac mansion, right

ign seems to have shut down the publishing arm of humble games and fired it’s staff

was just coming here to post that. here’s an article about it

they published SIGNALIS apparently, which i didn’t know. among a lot of other things. they also apparently have several games set to be released (including a sequel to everyone’s favorite 2010 IGF winning mutiplayer indie game Monaco), so i don’t know exactly what will become of those.

And slay the spire, and unpacking

shoot if you can publish those and still go under…uh

i think Slay the Spire and A Short Hike (and many others including Getting Over It) were originally released through Humble Monthly but not published by Humble Games if that makes sense. i’m not sure how this affects that, tho it seems like they’d fully shifted that business over to their publishing company? not sure though.

but yeah, feels like the late 2010’s/early 2020’s era of indie publishers sure seems to be dying.

[takes huge bong hit] you know what the nordic countries should do: have an indie game developer visa. develop your indie game in Finland, get gov funding, get healthcare. Would probably pay for itself after one Slay The Spire Like.

i’m still basically here buuuut i do tolerate them a bit more now, largely because they can give me a moment to smoke and i remain morbidly curious about the current state of machinima
sometimes a line or performance is deliberately or wildly accidentally funny

smoking weed during cutscenes is ace

to some extent i’m surprised they haven’t disappeared simply for cost of execution
all that extra animation and voicework

voice acting needs to be cut the fuck down! like use it when its important how ffxiv does ( and even then its too much sometimes. but like having voices to remember characters speaking in while you cant literally hear them is good!) or dont use it at all! fully voice acted stuff makes files TOO BIG

ALSO I READ TOO FAST FOR IT

No VA is something I actually think the Pokemon games are kinda good for being stubborn about, even if it’s primarily motivated by cutting dat budget.

it’s easy, you just make one set of VO where everyone emotes nonsense

there I just slimmed your localization budget down to text and UI translation

i am firmly in the camp of less VO purely for the workflow issues it solves

god forbid your VO is tied to…an animation??? did you spend days animating and placing in your scene to realize the line is delivered way too slow??? i hope you’re excited to do it all over again!!!
