Extremely relieved Disney is launching its own streaming service so I don’t have to watch any of this

i know TFA and TLJ are far from perfect movies, and i liked Rogue One for what it was, but it seems really weird to me that the breezy space opera vibe of the original trilogy is now just like reserved only for mainline series films, and everything else they do has to be some kind of weird tonal experiment

it goes in both directions too, i’ve tried to get into the clone wars so many times but it just seems like totally vacuumed of all life and energy. i get that it’s just for kids or whatever but so many people have said that it is like their ideal version of star wars and i just don’t get it

meanwhile stuff like this just kind of seems like the Zack Snyder version of Star Wars. Like, honestly, I’ll watch it because the alien and ship designs look cool as heck but uh IDK if I need someone getting vivisected by a pod door in my Star Warps Franchise

the one thing SOLO had going for it was that it was actually an adventure movie, and it actually worked pretty well! (in certain scenes, while as a whole it was just sort of soulless)

if they are going to flail around wildly like this with Star Wars the least they could do is hire someone competent to take a stab at making the weird baroque non-energy of the prequel trilogy actually work.

I guess what I’m saying is I’m a huge dork for Star Wars who has demonstrated a willingness to spend hours and hours of my life pondering galactic trade federation politics, but the reason I have really never gone so hard for the EU stuff is because the actual reason Star Wars are good movies is the scene in ANH where Harrison Ford does his patented Nerd Voice while impersonating an imperial officer on the death star

that scene even looks cheaper than any other in the whole movie when you watch it in 4K

What are you talking about this looks great!

ā€œEverything’s perfectly all right now, we’re all fine here now, thank you. How are you?ā€ is the best line reading in the entire franchise

I agree on the line reading but I hate to tell you that’s only 1080p

The last Jedi opens on a gag like this.

I dunno what you people want!

Well Disney and the Star Wars people sorta seem to agree with you? Rogue One went through heavy re-shoots and editing, because the original version was reportedly way too serious and focused on war and militarisms. And then Solo was also heavily altered, due to being too far in the opposite direction.

I think its probably a symptom of how quickly they were pumping this stuff out. Not really affording the time and care to focus everything down into whatever ideal.

I don’t mind it at all and was happy to have new Star Wars stuff every year. And was bummed when they announced they’d be slowing it down. But I guess people romanticize it too much, to just be happy with a steady stream of stuff.

In my opinion, Star Wars is such a huge universe with so many stories: The tonal shifts are appropriate and required, to express the full range of the universe. Rather, I think that the modern trend of micro explaining every last thing hurts Star Wars a lot more than tone. And that’s sort of the entirety of the issue with Solo. Solo is a fine movie. But a large portion of it is an unneeded explanation. and it was otherwise way too late to make good use of their setup for Qi’ra. Because Harrison is way old, now. And Han is dead in the main story thread. There can’t ever be an effective reunion of those two characters.

Also, the pre-allocating the size of things and then force fitting stories into that, is another large problem with current movie making. I mean, lets make another trilogy of 3 movies. Ok well…we have 3 movies to give a treatment on a story which could easily eat up 6+ movies. Screwed from the start? Abrahams and co. set us up for something much larger than 3 movies, with The Force Awakens. If they are going to lock down on 3 movies. They really should pre-write the whole thing, too.

This idea about Star Wars’ tone is interesting. Because, you aren’t’ the only person I’ve seen talk about the door cutting someone in half, as if it didn’t’ belong in Star Wars. Yet, Star Wars is full of limb cuttings, sarlac pits, people getting blasted and blown up, a guy incubating inside a not-a-horse carcass, etc.

Yeah, I don’t know what y’all are talking about, this is great. I might have to add that I was heavily into EU back in the day? Comics and books and such. So SW is a lot of different ā€œtonesā€ to me and this hits the spot.

I love Werner Herzog in this!

It looks super exciting to me. I heard Disney+ won’t be available world wide from the start though? Might have to pirate this

You’re right! I don’t know why this feels so different.

For what it’s worth in my post about above I was trying to say that I think the new trilogy manages to capture this pretty well, even if it seems a bit rote. That just makes it even weirder that literally nothing else star wars seems to be able to do it

It really seems like for many star wars fans the shadows of the empire era of serious pulp really was the apex of the franchise. Either that or clone wars I guess. I retain my title as the only star wars fan who likes star wars movies

Harrison’s Ford’s leg was broken by a pod door during shooting of TFA so…

Lock the door. And hope they don’t have blasters
