Let's just talk about Star Wars forever (Part 1)

all i know is the hatred of TLJ is the most depressing thing in the world to me (okay not really but youknowwhatimsaying). i whooped and cheered in the theater at certain moments. i laughed. i cried. i was so happy it was NOT TFA, which was so boring. i left the theater on cloud 9, ecstatic really. then i started looking at the reactions. I’ve never been more baffled by a fan response to something. I still don’t get it. it’s so weird, like somebody should write a book about it. but not me, because fuck those people

Wasn’t there someone who did a “study” of TLJ opinions and political beliefs? Right-wing misogynists are a vocal group, that should explain the brunt of it

enveloped in dread and despair.

i had a very long conversation with an old friend about this who hated the movie, afaik he’s more of a middle of the road centrist type guy but is definitely kind of conservative adjacent. he didn’t bring up any of the typical misogynist arguments against it but pointed out a lot of plot holes and stuff. honestly i did kind of see his point, but i guess all of the things i liked about the movie distracted me from stuff like that. but the more i think of it the central premise driving the plot (rebel ships on the run from the imperial army) doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense. my counterargument was that most of the star wars movies don’t make a whole lot of sense if you think about it too much. like the whole time dilation thing in ESB with luke on endor while everyone else is doing other stuff. idk

My eldest brother’s complaints with new Star Wars is that they killed his favorite character (Han) and then they killed his second favorite character (Luke) before he got to do much cool stuff. And most of his screen time was spent being dumb (according to my brother).

Also that Luke and Han didn’t get to have a big reunion and kick butt together.

And he hates Rose. Probably because she isn’t mainstream sex appeal.

He also didn’t like the big throneroom fight in TLJ, which I couldn’t quite figure out why.

people also nowadays just want to prove they are smarter than the cultural products to which they are helpless slaves. hence the prevalence of YT vids like “everything wrong with…” it’s just posturing. also misogyny

The Last Jedi is about withholding and trying to do semi-interesting twists re: the expected Cool Star Wars Shit You’re Waiting For so of course dudes who wanted to see Luke bust back onto the scene and wreck 6 star destroyer with his mind then walk away from the crashing, exploding ships in slow motion no-lookback no-flinch are pissed when he’s tall yoda + he milks the alien tit on screen.

I don’t know how you don’t do a lot of the shit that was complained about re: Luke, given the setup Rian Johnson was given? He must be in hiding for a reason? Why did everyone have to baby out about it? Is it because Rey’s a girl? Probably! In part!

people complain about TLJ being a remake of ESB in the same breath that they complain about timelines not working in the former and it’s like

hey

hey

have you watched Empire lately?

nothing in these movies has ever stood up to scrutiny they’re about space wizards with laser swords they’re dumb as hell and that’s fine and good

Luke got such a good treatment in TLJ though given how they set up TFA

Like I’m not going to object too strongly to anyone pointing out that Laura Dern’s big sacrifice play, even though it worked well thematically so I didn’t really mind, was kind of goofily conceived. But they gave Luke the best death imaginable! It was like stunningly cool as these things go.

Anyway that new movie poster looks silly as hell. Did they tell Rian Johnson he wasn’t allowed to kill off the big bad but then he did it anyway so now they just decided to write it as the omnipresent embodiment of evil or something

My eldest Brother loved Laura Dern’s supernova spirit bomb sacrifice.

On that poster, its probably Emperor Palpatine.

they’ve never really done enough with palpatine’s character for him to be like, the sole driving villain of the entire series

this is one of those things the prequels totally fell down on, they made him even more prominent and he’s completely two dimensional

I have no clue what they are about to do with Palpatine. But…I feel the Emperor was pretty solidly the big villain for the first 6 movies. But he was pretty clearly killed, or so we thought. So its a bit weird. They brought back Darth Maul who was also pretty clearly killed, so who knows.

And at this rate, we could have Han back, too!

a Han clone is gestating inside Chewbacca even now it will be born approx. 7 human years old and have all of Han’s memories uploaded via holocron at the end of the 2nd act

Chewy refers to him as his “right han man”. Which doubly annoys Han, because only Han understands Chewbacca.

this is just making me so excited to see further advances in the reanimated corpse technology which allowed an entirely new generation to appreciate peter cushing, but in digital zombie form.

they have a photorealistic Peter Mayhew that they put over the new Chewbacca dude before matteing the footage of him in the Chewie suit back over the digital Peter Mayhew
