having listened to some matthew shipp i think he should write catchier hooks and then maybe everyone would be playing his music instead. (musical competence not required to be a catty bitch :^)
nah i just think it’s a little silly and certainly plays into the stereotypes about jazz musicians being snobs. obviously i have a lot of respect for musical study given my whole deal.

what group are you in that people will actually listen to you playing scales at 200BPM and then say “Nailed it”? that’s a very supportive group. i usually don’t even get a response when i post completed songs to small friend groups, that kind of encouragement is rare and special.

this is in my small group classes thru Open Studio Pro, very good bunch of folks if you’re interested in jazz piano, other instruments, and especially they have some good courses on Barry Harris melodic/harmonic concepts. I go via Zoom a few times a week. It’s like $100/mo which seems a lot but is a really good value compared to the same in personal lessons.
I would also love to perform properly sometime, fair warning tho i never played before a few years ago so i’ve been building my piano technique from scratch and it’s very rough around the edges still. hence the scales
