spinning off the post i made in the language learning thread, about different types of learners:
i’m coming back to this video by patrick bartley, about teaching young students vs older beginners… he really was spitting straight facts this whole video. i’ve spent the better part of 5 years just kind of wandering around trying to reduce my ego and impatience in order to actually take advice from the people who know better than me, and to explore and have fun with the music. starting from zero, i rapidly built up this huge idea of what “the real music” was, and my distance and inability to do it just became overwhelming… i had to crush the ego, break myself all the way back down and just rejoice in making sounds a little bit cooler than yesterday. it’s just now after 4+ years that i’m starting to feel like i can kind of see what i’m supposed to be doing in a jazz context, nevermind actually doing it.
