gsoat is actually maya malava gowla / double harmonic imo but harmonic minor is close enough lol
m6/dim scale includes both the harmonic and melodic minor so that’s the real gsoat
i don’t really enjoy chord scale theory as a way to play jazz cuz it doesn’t seem to have a cohesive animating logic behind it. i wonder what this would be in barry harris terms. i should have attended chris parks’ Q+A class yesterday to ask.

Been trying to practice Misty on the piano using the version in The Real Book. I’m practicing the left hand chords while humming the melody, but one of the problems I’m running into is that my humming keeps turning into a completely different song- one from an anime. And after going back and listening to it, and comparing the two songs, I’m left wondering: why the heck does the progression of the main theme to Saint Tail sound so god dang similar to Misty? I can’t unhear this and considering I’ve been wanted to learn to play that on a piano too, this is now getting way too confusing during my practice sessions.
spinning off the post i made in the language learning thread, about different types of learners:
i’m coming back to this video by patrick bartley, about teaching young students vs older beginners… he really was spitting straight facts this whole video. i’ve spent the better part of 5 years just kind of wandering around trying to reduce my ego and impatience in order to actually take advice from the people who know better than me, and to explore and have fun with the music. starting from zero, i rapidly built up this huge idea of what “the real music” was, and my distance and inability to do it just became overwhelming… i had to crush the ego, break myself all the way back down and just rejoice in making sounds a little bit cooler than yesterday. it’s just now after 4+ years that i’m starting to feel like i can kind of see what i’m supposed to be doing in a jazz context, nevermind actually doing it.
