ooh is 2 bad? i’m curious. grew up playing it and i will maintain the soundtrack slaps but beyond that i’m a stalk in the breeze
We’ll get to it in July!
I had this one as a kid too! I didn’t have a super nintendo so my whole life I’ve assumed DKC was overrated. Just big, slippery sprites collecting hundreds of trinkets

You play as a caveman (what’s with all these caveman games???) and have to collect musical notes (???) after 4 stages you play a very short simon-says and then see a concert based off how many musical notes you collect. It requires you play the game in the most obnoxious way and there is terrible hit detection.
NFL Quarterback Club
Had to see this one for myself and it doesn’t look that horrible…wait hold on.
Wow almost playable.
See I was playing it like this:
On my flashcart, I noticed that a lot of sports games like baseball and soccer have special color options to make them more legible. I don’t know if that’s based on Super Gameboy, GBC or what though.
how many different song possibilities are there at the end or levels? like does the song lose one note for every note you miss or are there goal thresholds, like under 10 notes for the bad song or whatever
also are the songs that play when you don’t get enough notes online? I love it when game music is purposefully ‘bad’ (playing the piano when you don’t have the notes in dark alliance 2, rapping bad in parappa, the failstate Christmas chocobo song (which they included on an official ffxiv soundtrack), the berserk music in shadow hearts, etc. it’s the best videogame music
I completed one set of stages then went to bed. Don’t have enough time to try and monotously hit each music note containing skull 8 times. It seems like it would change.

I played through Kirby’s Dreamland 2! Like Trax, the details in animation are what make it into a gem. I think I played it wrong when I started to speed through the last three worlds. Kirby is meant to be strolled through and time should be set aside for enjoying the sights. Maybe it would be best to treat Kirby as a snack to be enjoyed in 15 minute chunks.
There are fewer powerups in here than in Adventure, but now Kirby has animal friends. Each friend interacts with the powerups in different ways. There’s a fun elemental effect to it all where the fish is terrible on land but the only powerful friend in water. There are a lot of rooms with water!
The final boss is totally busted though. I spammed save states almost every 5 seconds to get away with it.
When I was playing this, I came across a blog post from a now famous indie game designer. It was funny how her writing in that post was pretty typical of any other forum rant. She wasn’t completely wrong, but I thought the energy was misspent. It made me think, “Hey, I’m writing posts on the internet now. Maybe I could become a lauded game designer one day.”
@Rudie can you please play Midori no Makibaō for me? It’s a horse racing game from TOSE based on a manga where a white mule wins every big race. I’d play it myself, but I lack the required skills.
Wish there was more to say about it! Everyone talks in heavy kansai. Between each race you have the option to train in the mountains or on the track or rest. You can set cards to use during the race. You’d need an instruction manual as to what each of the cards do. After 2 last place finishes I won my next 4 and then got last place because makibao was in a bad mood.
There was no notable difference between the races and tapping A to go faster was more annoying than playing a shooter.
Oh well, thank you for giving it a try. It sounds a lot like what would happen to me if I tried horse racing. I’m very pleased to learn that everyone speaks with a Kansai accent. Maybe if you fed okonomiyaki to Makibao, he’d be a bit happier. Just a thought…
Batman Forever is truly awful. By Probe who also did a lot of the Mortal Kombat ports. The combat is exactly the horrible MK gameboy combat ported over with the exact same animations and hope you can abuse before the computer does. Difficult to say what is going on I played this on the handheld and mister trying to make sense of it.
Also played a few ports Primal Rage, Pocahontas (Listen To The Book of Megadrive episode, same game). Intrigued that at least from this fandom wiki, all 3 Helicopter Strike games got ports in 1996. I don’t particularly like the strike games but have been intrigued how unreadable ports are on this thing.
And finally a bad baseball game Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball. For whatever reason this game would not leave my mind as a youth and I rented the Genesis version several times. It’s bad! I had good baseball games (Triple Play Gold.) maybe the ultra dark color palette? The imposing Big Hurt himself? Anyways the game boy version is also bad.
For my own reference here are the things I am looking to play from this fandom page so I don’t have to keep loading it (US region):
1995
Kirby 2
True Lies
Casinofunpack
Madden 96
Street Fighter 2
Killer Instinct
The Getaway 2
Super Return of the Jedi
1996
Donkey Kong Land 2
Dragonheart Fire and Steel
Jeopardy Platinum and Teen
Madden 97
Olympic Summer Games Atlanta
Sword of Hope 2
Tetris Blast
Torpedo Range
Got pocket monster, English study tests, and a lot of fishing on the Japanese side.
incredible contrast between the car and the road. it really shows you how much these developers cared about the platform
Those English Study games (Gougaku Boy or something look it’s late) are part of a massive series that from checking two of them are just…self service flash cards? You mark each card as known or unknown and move to the next. No quiz, no “test” (the test section is the same it just grades you on ???).
The title screen is some shit though.
Gegegetarou something something I have only pop culture exposure to this series and despite being interested in Japan my whole life Youkai and Youkai accessories make my eyes roll over. Anyways this game sure does look familar, as if it was made very quickly to cash-in on a surprise mega-hit that along with Hatsune Miku’s Wizard School would define everyone that was a few years younger than me.
Just me? Just me.
Ahead of its time!
I came across the Gegege game while doing research for a thread that I have yet to publish. Today is my last day of school so expect that thread very soon!
It was part of a game jam from last month
It got 3rd place.
4th place Decline by BenJelter is a new horror game by the creator of Opossum Country
Looks like a promising new batch of Game Boy homebrew titles.
edit:
8th place WYRMHOLE
is a fun tempest-like.
