I was just thinking earlier today how lame it is that John Wick got franchised and has like, two spin-offs and a tv series in production, but I’ll admit I still got hype to see Donnie Yen. I saw Triple Threat in theaters so I guess, at heart, I will always get hype for a bunch of martial arts boys in the same movie
anyone else notice the trigger in the 2011 that they hand him looks like a normal stock staccato trigger except the trigger shoe looks metal instead of polymer? how’d he get one of those, I’d love one
I don’t know why this has to be 3 hours long!
i used to wonder that but now that they’ve announced they’re doing dick tracy villains in the most beatty season we’ve had in years it’s starting to make a lot of sense
With this three-hour runtime and The Continential series (starring… Mel Gibson!) and the upcoming Ballerina spinoff (not sure if that’s coming this year, probably not), this may be the year John Wick collapses under the weight of the “mythology” it’s been building.
I’ve found every time a new one of these comes out it obsoletes the old one and I can’t go back to it anymore except maybe a specific scene or so, like a videogame sequel that improves the mechanics too much
Glad (not glad at all) that the series is moving into fatsuits. Chase that Marvel money, I guess.
they are attempting to artificially replicate the prowess of sammo hung with that and i do not think it will work for them
It collapsed under the weight of its mythology in the second movie. Notwithstanding the action scenes keep getting better. A devil’s bargain.
I never understood the complaints about the mythology, it’s always vague and unexplained anyway. “oh no another scene of wick chopping off his finger in middle of the desert in some weird ritual, if only this were more generic”?? the first movie it’s just some lame secret comic book assassin underworld the 2nd movie on it’s in an assassin sharing economy hellworld where they try to keep this assassin stuff out of public but sometimes it spills over and every normal person just pretends to not notice or not talk about the world being run this way. that’s way weirder and cooler
I still think john wick 2 is my favorite one
In a strong field, that scene is incredibly generic. You should have gone with Larry Fishburne being a pigeon-handling homeless underworld king, that at least has some legs. But I mean, it’s all genre pastiche. When I complain about “mythology”, what I’m complaining about is a refocus from simple and punchy character drama (revenge!) to rule-based bureaucratic manipulation (lore). I can’t care about the systems on their own merits because they’re too facially ridiculous to bear any relationship to actual human life and therefore emotion (contrast, I dunno Andor is a recent popular example), but at the same time they’re too load-bearing in the plot to merely be fun set dressing (which is what they are in the first movie).
but in that scene we get wick’s actual motivation to keep continuing on and living doing all this shit: so he can just torture himself with memories of better days. that’s the most relatable to real human life it gets right there!
Yeah but it’s contextualized in relation to the Code of the Blood Council or whatever. May as well be showing me the Senate in Phantom Menace
I hope wick fights his way to bill skarsgard and bill is like nyeeeh don’t hurt me… I’m the birthday boy… and then keanu deletes his whole head
fuck yes I love trailers that are official
i like john wick with the coins the sequel movie, i think the roles everyone has in the murder ecosystem were really fun.
the one that im iffy on is the third cuz all the interviews about bonding with and training dogs got me excited and then i only got 40 seconds of dogs. i demand more dogs
I caught the first movie a year or so after release and thought it was neat, then only got around to the second one last year and count me in the “explaining all this mythology is bad” camp. Oddly enough I can barely even recall the action scenes from the second one as I was getting rather tuned out by all the lore. Lore is dumb, killing an entire criminal organization because the crime boss’s son stole your car and killed your dog is much better.
the mythology expanding is a good thing. now john wick can have actual character relationships with people that make sense and don’t feel masturbatory. 2 and on are the john wick movies i actually like for this. you get a fuller picture of john wick the character. the first movie tries to have its cake and it it too in that regard (he’s mysterious, but also everyone knows him to be the ultimate killer) whereas 2 and on place him within an actual web of relationships that is interesting.
also the blood effects get significantly better. the first movie has some of the worst DTV-ass cgi squibs i’ve ever seen. if you can get keanu reeves for your movie you can pay for good blood cg or real squibs.
