Better RPGs than CT? Such as?

At one point in my life about 10 years ago I had nothing to do and nothing to hope for, and just wanted to live like a hermit. I did nothing but play RPGs for two years and never stopped. Like all the time. All of these AGTP translation patches.

I reget nothing. It was nice. I have become a regular person since then, but with a lot of respect for total deviancy.

Anyway I’ve beaten like 200 RPGs. Not even kidding. I cannot possibly list them all. I know way too much about RPGs. I have… Seen things. I have even finished Magna Carta Tears of Blood, the nadir of the genre.

I could be a Barkley NPC.

I don’t really see RPGs as shallow comfort food? There is something very enjoyable about rushing through them with lower numbers than expected, finding the flaws to exploit through experimentation.

that’s a not-insignificant part of why I will always love saga frontier (apart from general kawazu weirdness); that each of the seven characters campaigns is like ~4 hours long is really quite pleasant

also the entire game feels like it barely hangs together through a series of checkpoints and broken dialogs

JRPGs are probably my favorite genre, though usually moreso from what I can put in to them than for what they intentionally bring me. If that makes sense. Lots of feelings about pacing, moment-to-moment decisions and events, pleasing UI design, and how the time it takes to beat a boss is sometimes necessarily long, since it serves as a sort of metaphor for character struggle, even if it’s not especially difficult.

Last time I played Earthbound I thought a lot about how the first “boss” is handled by Buzz Buzz because Ness is too weak, and then the next boss fight is actually Ness taking on two bosses in a row, one being a tank.

Numbers can tell an interesting story.

Fire Emblem Sacred Stones

Stuff I haven’t finished (and probably won’t)
FFXIII, FFXIII-2, FFXIII Lightning Returns (these are just bad)
Suikoden 1-5 (never got into them, tried really hard, just always found myself getting bored)
Chrono Cross (got to the end of it, left at some point and never came back)

Dragon Quest VIII (emulated - also meh)

Makai Kingdom (see Disgaea)

Magna Carta II, Magna Carta remixes (most of these were just really, really bad)
Golden Sun series (meh)
Brave Fencer Musashi (meh)
Fire Emblem series (feel like I’ve played at least some portion of these and rarely if ever came back to any of them)
Luminous Arc (meh)
Valkyria Chronicles (not feeling it)
Tales of Zestiria (anime-est of games I’ve played in a long time)

I think the only traditional jRPG I played last year was Zestiria (for a total of 53 minutes). Welp, this list is long. I played most of these as a kid. Part of the reason I completed so many I think is because a good 90% of these came from Blockbuster, and thus I felt I just had to blaze through them, believing that I might not get another chance to play them (which in many cases, was true, at least when I was a kid).

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, Megaman Battle Network 2, SRW Alpha Gaiden, maybe Rudra no Hihou and Shin Megami Tensei 2 that i forgot to add.
But CT isn’t bad, it’s just not my style, aestheticaly I didn’t find it attractive. The game is pretty fluid that’s why it was easy to finish, breath of fire 3 would be a great deal better if it didn’t have the damn fetch quest cutting the history.

I think Gamesharking through FFIX over couple days during a highschool summer is the best time I have ever had with one of these videogames.

I think the built-in overleveling functions of the recent FF7 ports are an enlightened step in the right direction. Take it a step further and allow disabling all random battles. Give full player agency over the slider from Menu Trudge <-> Asset Dispenser.

You mean Bravely Default?

Still have to deal with the consequences of exp in that. If they wanted to Get Real, should have auto-leveled in the background once you fliped the switch.

I approve of this approach for remasters of old school games. It would be nice if they applied something similar to, say the old Wizardries (I know i’ll never have the patience to play them otherwise) but for new games, they should design them with good pacing to begin with.

Pretty sure 9s next release let’s you turn off battles.

I wish these guys respected my time more…

…yea
pokemon is the only JRPG series that has ever managed to hold my attention. it’s a combination of childhood hooks and a certain kind of innocent charm. it doesn’t ever pretend to be more than it is. unfortunately i suspect that removed from the curved-plastic-and-color-screen context of my childhood, the games would fail to hook me nowadays. but who knows! actually holding the game in your hand like an honest-to-goodness toy was a large part of the experience.

for other JRPGs they’re the sort of games that I mentally pass over every time I see their names mentioned. I just know, 'this game is -that type of game- and it won’t be for me.'
i played like 20 minutes of earthbound, 2 hours of undertale, 10 minutes of ff4, a couple hours of chrono trigger, etc.
i feel like including bioware games etc is against the spirit of the thing. recently i’ve been playing a lot of pervy games written in RPG Maker but i don’t think that counts either.

I think that for me, trying to push through tough enemies while underleveled and refusing to grind would be the entire draw.

Coming of age. Going on a journey. Finding comrades. Gaining experience. Growing. The idea that, with enough time and patience, any obstacle can be overcome. You can be the hero.

I finished Mother/EB0 but never saw what all the fuss was about and just stopped right there. Mother 3 is definitely on my “to ROM” list though.

Here is my soul:

Final Fantasy 7/8/10 (so many times jesus)
Phantasy Star Online
Mother/Earthbound 0 (emulated)
Shin Megami Tensei (emulated)
Final Fantasy 3 DS
Kingdom Hearts (oh god)

Probably don’t count:

Harvest Moon 64
Demons Souls
Monster Hunter Tri
Shiren

I tend to replay the same games when I know the mechanics well enough to exploit them. This is where all my jarpeegee enjoyment comes from.

i mean, outside of a handful of cool things (the final boss, the forgotten man, the music) it’s pretty easily the least interesting game in the series.

I forgot about the forgotten man! This game now has new levels of profundity.

Seeing the screenshot of the Duncan Factory posted in the Mother 3 thread did bring back some good memories. I seem to get a kick out of perversely complex dungeons.

I was looking for threads about SaGa games…instead this one activated a degenerate list itch. And now it is a lich.
