Honestly when it comes to a lot of these JRPGS I think there were fun. But their time was in the past.
The debate around FF7 removing ATB for Crisis Core-esque combat seems silly to me. Of course something active is better. Those battle systems are relics. I know some people stand by them and some smaller studios can till make good use of it. But I think a AAA studio going for mass appeal would be wrong to bring it back in 2016, or whenever it comes out.

It is kind of surprising to see a lot of games I canāt put on this list because I never bothered to beat the end boss, despite dumping tons of time into bonus areas and power leveling/grinding for items. Also if IGAvanias count then add every single one.
Wait, is he dead? I donāt think a lot of his games came out where I live, I only remember playing Saga Frontier 2 at a friendās place, and oh boy, that game was beautiful! And had a weird level up mechanic? Due to other obligations (FFVIII, MGS, GT) it didnāt get a lot of playtime back then though. Iād like to revisit it at some point maybe. And I think I played Legend of Mana when I got my Playstation modded, but I mustāve gotten stuck somewhere. I really wanna play that again. And I think I played Minstrel Song when I got my PS2 modded, and didnāt like the chibi characters at all, and also got stuck wandering around aimlessly somewhere. I probably wonāt play that again, but I feel a little guilty after having read Timās love letter (that I canāt find a working link of).
I guess I like Kawazuās approach to JRPG design, but I donāt know if want to put a not insignificant amount of time into exploring systems that seem like artificial complications invented to dress an old paradigm in new clothes, an old paradigm that I find less interesting compared to the possibilities SRPG or ARPG battle systems provide. And itās totally possible that I am doing his JRPGs a great disservice, misjudging them based on insufficient exposure, but I think Iād just rather play more Fire Emblems or Igavanias for now.
More of you know fluent Japanese than I thought or u-playinā with that Mother 2 nonsense.
Was worried scrolling through this thread āI think iāve played more shit than everyone else here?ā and then people came in to do a thing. This is a decent enough exercise in memory though! Iāll take it!

Iām going to stop there. Oh wait Romancing SaGa yeahhhh. Iām sorry @firenze you are playing Dragon Quest VI and that is the bad one .
the thing with saga frontier is that the jrpg mechanics are pretty darn tolerable even for 2015, but the plotting and the progression are inscrutable nonsense if you werenāt playing it with a friend who had the bradygames guide in 1998. like, good luck knowing the individual NPCs you have to find and talk to in order to finish half of the quests.
I guess my list is:
Mother 3
Barkley 1
Space Funeral
Iām not a great game-finisher, but my played-any-of list is probably 8-9 games. I only started emulating non-handheld consoles a couple years back, and most of the RPGMaker games Iāve been interested in donāt seem to slot into this genre.
Incidentally, I started playing SaGa Frontier for the first time recently. It doesnāt get much mention around these parts so Iām quite surprised so many have played/finished it.
Iāve started a whole bunch more than I finished, of course, but I think Iāve still finished a fair bit.
Anyway, my list of finished JRPGs would be (counting only straight RPGs. No tactical, no action games)
Are all final chapters in Fire Emblem games utter bullshit? After not beating the āfirstā GBA game I will not beat Sacred Stones either, nope not happening. Demons will rule the world Iām afraid. Sorry, I really tried. Now onto Sword of Seals.
I played through Ys Seven over the end-of-year holiday break. It was okay, but thereās an awful lot of talking and filler. I usually find the Ys plots (or at least, the history driving Ys plots) to be interesting but Sevenās was terrible and the dialog just went on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and
