jarpeegees you beat

fair
Honestly when it comes to a lot of these JRPGS I think there were fun. But their time was in the past.

The debate around FF7 removing ATB for Crisis Core-esque combat seems silly to me. Of course something active is better. Those battle systems are relics. I know some people stand by them and some smaller studios can till make good use of it. But I think a AAA studio going for mass appeal would be wrong to bring it back in 2016, or whenever it comes out.

Final Fantasy 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, MQ
Suikoden 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Grandia 1, 2
Breath of Fire 3, 5
Pokemon Blue, Silver, SoulSilver
Wild Arms 1, 2
Legend of Mana
Star Ocean 2
Valkyrie Profile
Shadow Hearts
Parasite Eve 1
Tales of Xillia
Metal Saga
Xenosaga 1, 2, 3
.hack 1, 2
Chrono Trigger, Cross
Front Mission 3

It is kind of surprising to see a lot of games I can’t put on this list because I never bothered to beat the end boss, despite dumping tons of time into bonus areas and power leveling/grinding for items. Also if IGAvanias count then add every single one.

Wait, is he dead? I don’t think a lot of his games came out where I live, I only remember playing Saga Frontier 2 at a friend’s place, and oh boy, that game was beautiful! And had a weird level up mechanic? Due to other obligations (FFVIII, MGS, GT) it didn’t get a lot of playtime back then though. I’d like to revisit it at some point maybe. And I think I played Legend of Mana when I got my Playstation modded, but I must’ve gotten stuck somewhere. I really wanna play that again. And I think I played Minstrel Song when I got my PS2 modded, and didn’t like the chibi characters at all, and also got stuck wandering around aimlessly somewhere. I probably won’t play that again, but I feel a little guilty after having read Tim’s love letter (that I can’t find a working link of).

I guess I like Kawazu’s approach to JRPG design, but I don’t know if want to put a not insignificant amount of time into exploring systems that seem like artificial complications invented to dress an old paradigm in new clothes, an old paradigm that I find less interesting compared to the possibilities SRPG or ARPG battle systems provide. And it’s totally possible that I am doing his JRPGs a great disservice, misjudging them based on insufficient exposure, but I think I’d just rather play more Fire Emblems or Igavanias for now.

Speaking of which, I saw all of Harmony of Dissonance’s endings yesterday.

every time I try to play saga frontier 2 I just wind up playing the first one again

and I don’t think I’ve actually played any other kawazu games other than the gameboy ones

SaGa Frontier 2 was such a mess. I wish I could have loved it because wow. Such a mess

i really should get around to playing saga frontier

found minstrel song fascinating

More of you know fluent Japanese than I thought or u-playin’ with that Mother 2 nonsense.

Was worried scrolling through this thread ā€œI think i’ve played more shit than everyone else here?ā€ and then people came in to do a thing. This is a decent enough exercise in memory though! I’ll take it!

Earthbound, Mother 2
FF FFTA, FFCC, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, XII, FFCCCB (not a jrpg)
Kingdom Hearts 1, 2, the PSP one, the 3DS one
Dragon Quest I, V, VII, VIII, Slime 2
Phantasy Star Online Ep. 1 and 2, Phantasy Star
Pokemon Red
Grandia 1 and 2
Skies of Arcadia
Persona 4 and 4 The Golden, Persona Q, SMTIV
Chrono Trigger and Radical Dreamers
Suikoden 1
Secret of Mana
Mario RPG and Paper Mario 64
Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter
Vagrant Story
Tales of Rebirth
Crimson Shroud
Shining Force

I’m going to stop there. Oh wait Romancing SaGa yeahhhh. I’m sorry @firenze you are playing Dragon Quest VI and that is the bad one .

the thing with saga frontier is that the jrpg mechanics are pretty darn tolerable even for 2015, but the plotting and the progression are inscrutable nonsense if you weren’t playing it with a friend who had the bradygames guide in 1998. like, good luck knowing the individual NPCs you have to find and talk to in order to finish half of the quests.

saga frontier 1 is legit shit fuck that game

The only jerpeg I actually want to beat is Barkley Gaiden 2

I guess my list is:
Mother 3
Barkley 1
Space Funeral

I’m not a great game-finisher, but my played-any-of list is probably 8-9 games. I only started emulating non-handheld consoles a couple years back, and most of the RPGMaker games I’ve been interested in don’t seem to slot into this genre.

yeah I was gonna post about us all forgetting to list Barkley 1

so go ahead and add that one to basically all of our lists I guess

I finished up Dragon Quest V today, so add that to my list.

I haven’t played through either Earthbound or Mother 3 I guess it’s time to get banned

I forgot that I’ve beaten Riviera: The Promised Land which is actually a pretty good game if you can ignore the animu

Incidentally, I started playing SaGa Frontier for the first time recently. It doesn’t get much mention around these parts so I’m quite surprised so many have played/finished it.

I’ve started a whole bunch more than I finished, of course, but I think I’ve still finished a fair bit.
Anyway, my list of finished JRPGs would be (counting only straight RPGs. No tactical, no action games)

  • Chrono Trigger
  • Final Fantasies: 7 (3 times), 6 (2 times), 8 (2 times), 10, 10-two, 12
  • Earthbound
  • Suikoden 2
  • Dragon Quest 8
  • The World Ends With You

Hmm. I think that’s it.

Are all final chapters in Fire Emblem games utter bullshit? After not beating the ā€œfirstā€ GBA game I will not beat Sacred Stones either, nope not happening. Demons will rule the world I’m afraid. Sorry, I really tried. Now onto Sword of Seals.

I played through Ys Seven over the end-of-year holiday break. It was okay, but there’s an awful lot of talking and filler. I usually find the Ys plots (or at least, the history driving Ys plots) to be interesting but Seven’s was terrible and the dialog just went on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and
