Okay, I’m probably the only one here who likes his live action movies
i haven’t seen them. that sounds weird lol
also, Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer; Angel’s Egg? idk, i think all of these rule.
I think his live action ones are actually more cartoonish than his anime. They’re definitely an acquired taste.
I haven’t seen his live action Patlabor series, I have heard it is terrible, but that tends to be the vibe of most reviews of his stuff
i watch angel’s egg at least once a year, not least because it’s amusing to punk new people with it and get their feedback
i liked angel’s egg so much that i made my twitter name 𝖆𝖓𝖌𝖊𝖑
for awhile
shirow really seems to have loved worldbuilding more than making stories, i think. like appleseed has two whole books of extra worldbuilding info. it’s a shame he never worked on a tabletop rpg (afaik). also a shame that that project he did that was gonna be nothing but worldbuilding never got finished, or that what he did do never got translated to english.
Also check out DaiGuard. It’s less well animated, written and directed but is in the same space of the bureaucratic nightmare of operating a giant robot.
oshii’s ghost in the shell fuckin rules. the boat scene! all the gender shit!
like motoko sees an office lady thru a window with the same body as her and that glance she gives her says so much with so little! she’s surprised but not shocked, like this happens occasionally and fucks up her day because it’s an intrusive reminder that she doesn’t know who she really is, what even is individuality when you’re mass produced, and does this office lady feel the same way?
that’s the one, that’s my favorite shot in the movie
I very much enjoyed the first manga, I think it’s better than the film (Oshii’s one), there’s more space for the plot and discussion about the nature of identity. I also like Shirow’s artwork. Personally i think it’s the best version of Ghost in the Shell.
I didn’t understand what was going on in Ghost in the Shell 2: Man-Machine Interface at all. Some of Shirow’s use of 3D modelling is not particularly successful either.
my formative anime experience was with angel’s egg in a sleep-deprived delirium at 4 am on a sunday when i was 8. hopefully this tells you a lot about me
I have a boxset of Oshii’s live action films that I bought at some anime con I was forced to be at purely on the strength of the cool looking power armor troopers on the front of the box and I can & will bring to Branson
They’re fuckin insane btw
I like trying to explain the plot of Talking Head to people: “It’s about a film crew trying to make a movie, but turn out to be starring in said movie which is actually the movie that you are watching”
Oh the jin roh stuff is way cooler than his other live action movies
i’m genuinely thrilled that this turned into an earnest discussion of Japanese cartoons thanks yall
Patlabor rules
I watched patlabor
didn’t have quite that much thigh
was good
that’s a dirty pair amount of thighs
are they also disaster lesbians
