netflix jail

will it only release after a certain time? that’s p dumb lol
esp since it’s already out elsewhere

netflix only does anime (at least, thus far) in seasonal (well, cour) chunks and the seasonal chunks only come out when or after the season ends

the first half of LWA didn’t go up until a few weeks after aired in Japan, Violet Evergarden didn’t get added until the day the show ended in Japan, Hi-Score Girl didn’t get added for a week or two (somewhat unceremoniously around New Years)

Amazon used to be bad about this but even they add stuff weekly now

Netflix is literally the only platform with first run animes that doesn’t simulcast

This year I noticed Amazon video, which last I checked (~5 years ago) was a total joke, is really good now. I like their buy-one-TV-episode-at-a-time model that also discounts the entire season purchase by what you already paid. And their content coverage in both anime and mainstream TV/movies seems solid – I no longer have the frustration of hearing about some TV/movie that sounds exciting, and then not finding it on the platform, which soured me on Netflix.

Amazon solved enough of the problems of video streaming that this year I’ve started weaving in TV and movies back into my life again, after I had largely stopped bothering with the entire medium (in favor of games and books) for an entire decade.

amazon video also has the only legal english stream of a kamen rider show in the west

They’ve also got a usable interface for digging into their back catalog – I can use the ā€˜More like this…’ button recursively and get it to cough up interesting things. Netflix is almost unusable because, in addition to screeching autoplay (the most user-hostile interaction I’ve ever seen), they are committed to only showing me stuff they think I’ll like, which means I can’t ask to see something new. The closest I can get is doing a search for a word like, ā€˜The’, and pawing through the search results.

Did you know Netflix sometimes has multiple cover arts to make each show look like something you’ve already watched? E.g. they’ll use one that emphasizes a female character if you’ve watched chick flicks in the past, even if that character only plays a minor role in the show.

I think Netflix has peaked and they’re strip-mining their audience trust to juice more short-term views out of them.

I always think that then they produce insane this-couldn’t-exist-for-decades stuff like the dark crystal reboot, which I’m not even that excited about as a show but am gobsmacked by as an employer of puppeteers

Yes! I got so mad when I realized it was re-surfacing things I’d already passed over like that, and still not showing me their back-catalog!

clearly they’re just doing it to compete with thunderbolt fantasy

Amazon lets you customize your subtitles/CC and it applies to all platforms once you sign in

it’s fucking amazing

especially since the default is some white-on-black-square Scandinavian shit

yeah I always like when these platforms remember they can actually innovate in interface design

it sucks that amazon owns imdb but the x-ray mode stuff that lets you see all the actors in a scene and click on them is very good

amazon changed their subtitles team in the last year or so, now they actually describe non verbal things and tone shit for subtitles, whereas before any time any music was playing itd say LOUD ROCK MUSIC

i like xray mode but i always accidentally access it. which is fine

said it before and i’ll say it again if netflix is gonna wait for a whole season to be over for foreign shows they could at least have separate translated subtitles and closed captioning for the dub across the board

I have negative faith in Netflix translations

the Hi-Score Girl script took the time to track down localized names for games published in the West but also mistranslated November

it was an on-screen sign. months in Japanese are literally a number and a kanji. and the person they hired fucked this up and no one caught it

I fucking failed multiple languages and I caught that shit

Julius Caesar and Augustus were the ones who fucked up Sept(7)ember to Dec(10)ember when they squeezed in two extra months named after themselves in the summer
