Even if it wasn’t good in a lot of the ways that it is, I don’t think I could resist Kill La Kill because it’s just so goddamn funny.
there’s specifically a joke in like episode 2 where makos dad is groping Ryuko when she wakes up where i literally yelled “piss off” at the tv and decided to watch something else
even when i tried again and got past that, the fact that the empowerment via fan service message is built on top of the main character’s magic clothes assaulting her and forcing themselves on her just… all the good things in that show (the animation is undeniably great) have this greasy film over them and i just can’t hack it
ive been meaning to give it another shot but i’d be shocked if it didn’t end up partly being a hatewatch
one thing i do appreciate about KLK is how naked and horny the show is for male characters, particularly gamagori. and i like that the nakedness translates to character arc themes; a lot of the plot revolves around peeling away the facades these characters build around themselves and finding strength in vulnerability.
that said, if the beginning bothers you it’s probably for the best you don’t watch the rest because hoo boy it gets really rape-y. just so much sexual assault.
KLK is definitely not an anime i would admit to liking in polite company.
panty stocking pissed me off less than what i saw of klk
Panty & Stocking stays very much consistently horny for the entire season where Kill La Kill has these peaks and nadirs. You get used to the former to the point where it becomes background noise but the latter has a moment of shock once it cranks back up.
Gamagori is great, Mako is also great especially when she gets her mob boss uniform, Nudist Beach teacher is questionable but I have a soft spot for him. The fashionista mother, on the other hand…
KLK just felt like watered down Panty & Stocking to me and i actually found it boring (!!)
Imaishi is best in short & sweet doses imo, which is why i recommend Luluco and LWA ep 8.
i do love gamagoori though
Imaishi’s best work is the OP for OK KO Let’s Be Heroes
KLK is absolutely on some pure go nagai energy (especially fashion mom, in both her design and the whole villains-do-literally-every-awful-act-imaginable thing) and i don’t blame anyone for not liking it
oh Promare literally already came out wow i am behind the times
I’ve seen the Promare preview in Paris in early july and that’s Imaishi’s best work IMHO. It’s Imaishi’s hyperkinetic style augmented by some of the very best tech, with some really striking visuals and color work, almost reminiscent of Spiderverse at times.
It also touches upon urban stress, environmental issues and a society that relies on the oppression and vilification of a minority to remain under control, which is pretty topical. Although don’t get me wrong, it’s still mostly about badass firefighters with thunderbirds-esque machinery and hearts burning brighter than the deepest circles of hell who’ll face unsurmontable challenges with transforming mechs and, if that doesn’t work, bigger transforming mechs. I also really like that’s it’s dead set on the idea that being a firefighter isn’t so much about putting out fire than it is about saving lives foremost.
There’s an amazing kiss scene that had the hypest audience reaction I witnessed at that french convention other than the Evangelion preview bit where an Eva stabbed a giant monster with the Eiffel tower before Paris turned into a giant fortress. In context it stands for so much more than you’d think at first glance.
Related to the preceding discussion, it’s also by far Imaishi’s cleanest (in the least perverted sense) work, and maybe Trigger’s, depending on where you stand on the issue of little witch skirts.
if I had any vague complaint, one is that it is to the city arc of Gurren Lagann what Summer Wars is to Mamoru Hosoda’s second digimon movie, ie despite being thematically different in the end it borrows a number of elements and plot beats and almost feels like a remake. If you’re among those who mind that most Trigger productions end up being Gurren Lagann-like as they near their finales, that may be a problem. On the other hand, if you love Gurren Lagann, you’re in good company. Galo’s a very good fusion of Simon and Kamina.
Another complaint would be that there’s a whole bunch of secondary cast members who all look awesome but are barely developed. The movie really focuses on a main trio, and although it’s a magnificent trio, it almost feels like it should get a TV series remake, LWA style. But then it’d probably lose that Redline-esque madcap pace that never slows down and its incredible production values.
TL;DR Promare is the apex of everything Imaishi but without having to explain to your friends why one of the characters has a drill dong, go see it.
Here’s the first three minutes, and although they’re in a different style from everything that follows they’re still a good preview. French subtitles but you’ll probably get the gist of it.
Okay I’m pretty hype for promare now
i watched KLK in its entirety for the first time this past year and yeah, there’s a lot of stuff that i’d find hard to justify to anyone, which is why i don’t “recommend” it, but it does do a lot of things i found really touching and interesting so…idk. i’m glad i went through it.
promare looks sick
I was gonna see Promare at Otakon but they didn’t put in a big enough room and let people sit much earlier than it was listed.
Blumenkranz was a top jam 2014, so many times I got pumped at 3:36 with the way the japerman vox, meaning choir layering and singer’s high notes culminate
Ragyo’s theme supreme, I still get a lil gooseflesh
sometimes you’re unbearably wrong
okay, that’s a lie
I don’t love GX
but I still hold a determination to fist
i had this moment with a Supervert book once and yes it was absolutely mortifying
