Honestly the vibe would be better if it was mamecentric and in a sleazy arcade. Sure it’s a different Nostalgia but at least it isn’t weird rich kid nostalgia.
i will say that one of the joys of VR in specific but computing in general is having a machine that can produce infinite whatever so to speak. So I don’t even blame people for wanting to live the life of a rich weirdo because it turns out that you can have literally every game made for a console, and also 15 CRTs just floating around to play them on, and also all the posters you ever wanted as a kid and then 200 more posters you didn’t even think about wanting as a kid and you can just bask in it.
like, the first thing i did in klik n play was make it so that a when a ball collided with a wall, it would shoot out another ball exactly like it. then that ball would hit a wall and so on and so forth, creating infinite balls and then crashing the game eventually. there’s joy in just being able to Have It All!!
the problem i have with it is wanting to RETVRN (to being a child) in this way that seems…not therapeutic I guess? Like, indulgence is good and excess is good (when you’re not taking from others) but i hate this idea of reliving the Nintendo™ part of my life uncritically. we already had this discussion in worst images recently so i won’t totally relitigate it
but i do think there’s an interesting distinction there. i want people to have extremely dumb and indulgent things in their lives, but i dislike the framing quite a bit in this case. i would have no problem with it if the bedroom was an option among many - for instance, i would love a giant warehouse with one huge screen, or a monstrous tower of CRTs all displaying the same game jutting out at different and unusual angles, or a sky palace where the light of god is a CRT playing SMB3, or a gigantic beast who has a TV screen for a head, etc. etc.
but since the entire project is designed to
i get queasy
anyway i’m still gonna play fucking yoshi safari as god intended and no amount of queasiness will stop me
every time i load up capcom arcade stadium or any of the data east ps4 releases, i’m thankful for the “basic” approach of the arcade archives series. i’m so sick of 3d rendered fake
arcades with neon lighting. it feels like they’re not confident in the quality of the games themselves and that nostalgia is the only reason anyone would play them.
the mega drive collection, too. they go to all the trouble of modelling this bedroom that looks like no bedroom that ever existed, and yet the cartridges just have the game’s logo on the label instead of the actual label art. so it’s not even competent pandering!
The Japan Resident Has Logged On. I think the goal here is a little different, emotionally. As it is trying to keep alive the feeling of a communal space. Whenever I load up one of those fake arcades in the recent whatever I have this twing of sadness “will I ever see a real arcade again?”
genesis plus gx was ported to retroarch and heavily improved upon in the years since the wii homebrew days. But yes, if you are avoiding retroarch, blastem is the best sound emulation on pc.
definitely worth noting that, according to the developer of BlastEm at least, you won’t perceive the difference between Genesis Plus GX’s Nuked audio and BlastEm’s audio in any commercial software, despite the former being more accurate
BlastEm is already arguably the most accurate Genesis/MD emulator ever created (the “Nuked” core that can be optionally used in Genesis Plus GX provides more accurate FM emulation then what’s in BlastEm at present, but to my knowledge this is not noticeable in any extant software and on the whole I think my statement holds)
i don’t think you’d actually notice any difference blind A/B testing
on a semi-related note, there’s a new release of ares, and its 32x support has been moved from experimental to mainline now, lots of other juicy updates
wow the viewsonic monitor preset for the sony megatron shader is exactly what I was looking for for pc games this whole time. it looks great, and I was only using the sdr variant, when it’s really meant for something with good hdr. they even have a shitty tv preset too, hdr only though. can’t wait to have a nice monitor just for this thing. there’s a reshade port too, unfortunately it doesn’t have the viewsonic preset. and I’ve found max payne 1 and 2 at least don’t seem to like reshade after version 5.1.0 and it needs the addon support of newer reshade versions
I realized I had to switch from YCbCr 10-bit color to RGB 8-bit to get these to work. Using them in HDR, the subpixel layout and simulation of the aperture grille or shadow mask is incredible, but it looks like it’s running at 50 or 70 nits. I lose the glory of super-intense color I otherwise see on the new TV and I think it’s worth trading the somewhat-less convincing older CRT shaders for.
I’ll check again when I get a display significantly brighter than the 750nits or so my 2017 TV does.
does anyone know if there’s a way to make dolphin not do shitty bilinear upscaling if i dont wanna render the game at display res. like is there a way to use retroarchs sharp bilinear filter or smth instead there. is there a collection of dolphin shaders cause the ones in there are such shit. its too bad retorarch dolphin is so mid… doesnt have gamecube controller adapter support like standalone does and probs just runs worse generally
omg… they added the sharp bilinear filter to dolphin. real plate o shrimp moment i s2g this looks insanely better than it used to if u are not determined to render games at monitor res (and like pcsx2 a lot of dolphin games actually do have problems w/ being rendered at higher res so its not purely about me being a 480i Purist)
the many threads of people begging for pressure sensitive button support while the people with the ability to make it happen look on with bored disinterest.
also I noticed there was a recent feature added to pcsx2 that comes automatically checked “anti-blur: enables anti-blur hacks. less accurate to ps2 rendering but will make a lot of games less blurry.” I think we’re heading down a dark road when we start turning this kind of shit on by default in emulators.
I think I’m pro bezel shaders for handhelds at least because I think the small screen is important. the ones that are an actual photograph of a gameboy or whatever look good and the ones that are renders look bad though. I wish retroarch had it to where you could save a shader preset just for screenshots per game though, I don’t really want the whole ass bezel in every screenshot I take.
