It's a PC Engine Mini!

Also Valkyrie No Densetsu is pretty cool too besides some fiddly platforming and annoying last boss. Gives me a bit of a Soleil vibe somehow, which makes me wish this franchise continued on a a full fledged action RPG series.

there is an attempt at that on the famicom, but i don’t think there’s an english version

Yeah I think that was the first game? I skimmed a playthrough on YouTube and was mostly confused with what I was seeing

i foolishly bought it a few years ago thinking it was gonna be a lovably janky port of the arcade game :crying_cat_face:

Hey I made this thread!

This thing is pretty cute. Useless and pointless but cute. I am maybe not the biggest fan of a PC Engine controller? The deadspace between the buttons and the edge is weird. This is only my second time ever touching a PC Engine.

No Ys or Dynastic Hero is weird. Devil’s Crush missing is especially head scratchy.

Gonna get through a bunch of shooters and platformers through my next weeks of nights. Will hold off on finishing Tokimeki Memorial I pissed off my bro’s younger sister which ruined my stats with all the girls which is messed up. I don’t want to date a child!!!

After whining for years about Tengai Makyou 2 ManjiMaru I have a terrible reveal @HOBO .

It’s pretty good. At least the first 40 minutes. There are no jokes and it is actually pretty serious? You have to go to the local big town for a Festival and then there is a giant earthquake and a tentacle rose bud monster rises up and all the people in town (and your mom are teleported away.) some evil guys you defeated in Game Number 1 (I am guessing) are very mad at you! So now you are off to do a Dragon Quest.

After that slight railroading you have a lot of freedom of where you can try to go. The battles and movement is really fast. Like feels like an emulator on two times speed fast. I got to the first town grinded a bit, died woke up in my home village walked back to the first town. A guy had a rumor about down south and I walked around a lake unable to tell if the rumor would be obvious or this is 8bit design and just some random tile has a secret.

All the items have furigana but that does little to help parse their obtuse medieval Japanese names. Feel like I need to open a guide (and be 13) to playthrough this just for the items. The items have descriptions! Just I could figure out what in the store was shoes (all the equipment is just marked as equipment).

Also that pixels as animation intro is incredible. Maybe it is a shame we never have gotten a fan translation of it. I tried looking up on J-internet and some are clocking it at a 50 hour game yeeessh.

Super Darius feels like an unbeatable tech demo with all the homing enemies.

Aldynes gets way too fucking hard in the later stages. The weapon pick up are far and few and even abusing save states you can get stuck with The Wrong Weapon frequently. Those spiders in stage 3 made me cry before they added little homing enemies that ignore walls.

Feel like turning to the Chew Man Fu developers and asking when the game starts.

And JJ and Jeff sucks to play but also rules.

Forgot the whole reason I made that post originally was that the overworld theme is by Joe Hisashi? I heard and went “the rest of the soundtrack is chip tunes and this is very Joe Hisashi.”

But tonight was devoted to Star Parodier until the 7th? Stage which is some real bullshit with lots of SURPRISE! deaths and not enough supplied resources to restart from zero. Also you restart if you die in this stage lol. The bomberman stage is good but for a nominal cute-em-up it doesn’t do a lot to personalize the stages. But also having the problem with most of the shooters on this thing. But there are A Lot of shooters on this. I haven’t touched Super Star Soldier or R-Type yet. Will get to that soon.

Ninja Gaiden PCE has the worst parralax I’ve ever seen and is not nearly as tight as the NES game.

These things are selling for like $180 - $300 on eBay nowadays. I should sell mine.
