It is almost lady Ghostbusters time

all the dumb men’s rights/online think piece feminist stuff about this movie this just reminds me how much Beetlejuice is a way better 80’s Ghost Comedy than Ghostbusters by a hundred thousand miles.

Ghostbusters ain’t that good, y’all

I mean I should hope that movie bashes men - so much of dude humor these days is making fun of women + things women like that there should be some recourse

I watched it a couple years ago having been too young to partake of that zeitgeist and it was honestly pretty boring and surprisingly not funny. Murray had all the best lines as usual.

and PT Anderson has the best trailers (because, like Kubrick, he insists on editing them himself):

i should clarify that “Not that good” here is “Not that good to get so up and arms about a reboot”. I like the movie enough still and will still tell em about the twinkie, but honestly, it doesn’t stand up next to Beetlejuice, a totally fair and just comparison.

though that Ray Parker Jr. song is immortal and will always be good. i almost think all the hate against the remake makes sense if you’re just talking about the Fall Out Boy cover (jk, those dudes stirring up shit online are awful, but seriously, this song is an aural nightmare)

but I mean and I wanna keep posting of this
we’re at an interesting cultural point here where women can’t really like men things and women can’t really like women things anymore. like a good chunk of social media comedy is men making fun of women for expressing interest in feminine things, and a good chunk of the internet is men expressing hatred at women for expressing interest in Men Things so like I hope the movie makes fun of bald dudes and the dysphoria aging men surely have to go through and bad taste in khakis and I hope it makes fun of the cast members of the original aging and growing out of touch too, males deserve it

gender swapped Beetlejuice remake w Chelsea Peretti as Beetlejuice and, i dunno, Constance Wu and Randall Park as the Maitlands bc… they make a good couple on tv so why not

I read some spoilers and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed

they win by shooting all their energy beams at the big bad’s giant dong

Ghostbusters reboot is now @shrug approved

My thoughts about this movie so far are that I’m going to see it and that I think that the fact that a culture war has erupted around it means that maybe humanity deserves to end

Like every line of Ghostbusters is hilarious, I feel like I’m talking to space aliens.

It’s the greatest movie of the Reagan era. Scientists objectively prove the existence of an afterlife, a discovery so profound it should split society wide open, and use the knowledge to start a small business on a mortgage loan. The chief villain is the EPA getting all up in our plucky entrepeneurs’ grills with his clueless rules and regulations. A cardinal gives the Italian mayor of New York City the go ahead to let objectively crazy people use the National Guard so he can win his next election. The whole thing is a work of beauty.

Yup.

and yet it’s still not as good as Beetlejuice, weird.

I mean, ghostbusters is definitely better than beetlejuice on paper for the reasons that cuba pointed out

on paper Terminator 2 is better than the first, but when push comes to shove, i’ll still pick the first one

(this is probably another thing Cuba can get mad at me for)

I had no hope for this until I saw Spy, which actually made me laugh my ass off. Ghostbusters will at least be 1/4 good.

Anyways RLM did a pretty good overview of the merits of the original movie:

Yeah man I like Beetlejuice and all but Ghostbusters wins for me.

Also Terminator 2, are you kidding. have you seen how perfect that movie is? T1 may have been more impressive/innovative back when it premiered, but T2 wins of filmmaking craftmaship any time.

Yea I dunno, I might actually say the opposite–T1 to me looks better on paper than it actually is to rewatch. Something about it feels dated and off. Maybe if I could see it in a theater w a fresh and enthused crowd that would feel different, though. T2 just kind of glistens, even though when you stop to think about it it is sort of a dumbass movie.

yeah I def prefer T1’s grindhouse slime to T2’s pop-rock sheen but they are both pretty perfect

Beetlejuice is a movie I want to like more than I actually do. Like most Tim Burton movies, really. In conclusion, Ghostbusters is better.

i aint afraid of no reasonable differing opinions
