Hey, @blackpilled It’s nice to see that you’re still around! We are holding your posts in the queue. If you want to talk, feel free to send me a message!

Hi,

I’m Gnasher, totally new, a middle-aged European gamer with all 3 current consoles and an obsolete and ignored Gaming HTPC.

Nice to meet everyone.

Welcome. Do you have a current top game on each of those three consoles?

I’m currently playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on the PS5 Pro (before that Baldur’s Gate 3), next up is probably ToTK SE on Switch 2 or Metroid Prime 4. I don’t use the Xbox much but I have cheap Gamepass still running so would like to play the likes of Avowed . Too many games, not enough time!

Clair Obscur is a good one. We have a thread dedicated to it. I don’t remember whether there are spoilers in that thread, though, and the game definitely has some surprises that are better off remaining surprises. (I think the spoilers are mostly hidden.)

That said, if you feel like saying anything about the game in that thread you don’t need to read any of the the previous discussion first.

everyone overwhelm the new poster by recommending them your favorite thread. this is my favorite thread

Hello welcome!

My fav thread is the saturn thread because I want to encourage more people to try Saturn games. Especially some of the new fan translations.

avowed could have been sooo good but they kind of dropped the bag…you should get rid of game pass when you are out of it because of bds though

did you play the pillars of eternity games?

i was curious about it but then the reception, including here, turned me off. provided the game is ethically sourced, are there any mods that improve it, or is what’s bad about it at too fundamental a level?

the writing is bad and the leveling and loot mechanics are totally busted, only the latter is hypothetically fixable

I played a few months after release and at least half the unique items had placeholder +10/+20 carry weight bonuses in a game where almost nothing has weight. the verticality of the level design was fun and there’s junk to collect absolutely everywhere but I got sick of going to a place and it being empty because I didn’t have the right quest, which takes some of the fun out of exploring. the crafting system is abominable not because it’s particularly badly designed but because it’s endless game long busywork where you have to have the right upgrade tier of item to do damage to enemies that tier so it’s a constant churn of breaking shit down for materials and using them to upgrade stuff you actually use. it’s like technically fine but I found it added nothing to the game at all and was more time spent in menus.

the thing that ruined the loot/treasure mechanics is that the only thing that matters is how leveled up your gear is, which takes just enough resources (at least it did near launch) that there’s no point in trying out unique gear you haven’t upgraded. On top of that, every area has its difficulty pegged to specific levels of equipment. I made the mistake of spreading some upgrades around early on, so enemies were total damage sponges until I did enough grinding to upgrade a main weapon to the appropriate level for the area. An action rpg that punishes trying out new gear.

It ruins the sense of discovery of finding all those hidden treasure caches because all I will get is upgrade materials or unique weapons that are just upgrade materials I haven’t salvaged yet.

Hi all,

I made one post about 19 years ago about how much I liked Finny the Fish & the Seven Waters (still true!). Afterward, I bought a copy of Nocturne on the physical games thread, and then my anxiety got the better of me and I went back to lurking… for a few decades.

I nearly signed back up during the anniversary thread to thank you all for still existing, which I guess is what I’m trying to do in this thread now.

So… barring some unlikely courage, my third post will be in 2045 from whichever care facility I’m stuck in at that point.

is your avatar from an arcade game special stage?

Yup! It’s from the SNES port of Final Fight. After the player destroys the car in the Arcade version’s bonus stage, the car’s owner comes in and laments ‘Oh! My God!!’, which got modified to ‘Oh! My Car’ in the SNES version. I presume it was a just a forced change based on Nintendo’s policies on religious content at the time.

The voice sample for the SNES version is probably what has made it stick in my mind for 35 years though.

Here’s a Youtube video compiling different versions of that scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTy56bqI7lg
