introduce yourself

Been lurking for about a month and a half now. This place is filled with thoughtful discussion.
I’m more of a book nerd these days, but video games I find are more fun discussing with people.
I hope I can contribute meaningfully to this wonderful community.

Welcome! You’ve already contributed meaningfully with that avatar. I love it, what it’s from?

Hello! Charming profile picture yourself. This is something I pulled off a artist’s tumblr 8 years ago. I really wish I knew the artist’s name. He deleted the post and over the years I lost the artist’s page. I utterly adore the image. I wish I could thank the artist for creating it.

As consolation, here’s the full image of my profile and another he drew I have saved.

I have been here for 6 months because my girlfriend told me to have Armored Core VI PvP matches with people on the forum. I just discovered this thread as I slowly venture out from the ones she posts. I hate video games.

hey! found this place through a hacker news thread from 2010. heard this was a place that covers imports but this place is quite out of the way so that’s all i know.

i have to admit the forum layout is throwing me off and i dont quite have a grasp on the site culture. on the other hand i love gaming esoterica so who knows, i might just enjoy myself here…

Are you thinking about Insert Credit? What was the article? (from 14 years ago lol)

Be cool, be kind, share your passions and experiences. Everything else should fall into place.

hello!!! i found this place 2 years ago via tim rogers’ wikipedia page, whom i knew primarily for his youtube videos. right after creating an account however i realized i was hopelessly out of my depth re: literacy vocabulary experience etc. in basically every respect and incapable of keeping up with discussion - my MO became to lay low for the time being, osmose what i can, and post inconsequentially if at all. i nevertheless spend too much time scrolling here and it takes up an inordinate amount my mental space. it is a good place i think, though i often feel i ought to find somewhere more my speed* - all of which is to say i guess this post is for posterity? and personal satisfaction

i’ve made some silly games most of which revolve around Sandy who is a sort of impish externalization of my horrible college freshman self (warning: nasty colors)

every time i try to come up with a list of favorite games i am dismayed to find i dont actually like many of them but here’s some that i keep coming back to one way or another, being as honest as i can. only super love the first 3

top10s

Yume Nikki
Hello Charlotte EP3: Childhood’s End
Action 52
Heisei Pistol Show
Robotron: 2084
untitled (the flower game)
Bat Castle
I’m Scared of Girls
Insensato
Phantasmagoria 2

i’ve played games since i was a kid but only started thinking about them seriously 3-4 years ago. my kid self’s list as nearly as i remember would’ve been

Terraria
Robotron: 2084
Downwell
Super Meat Boy
Nuclear Throne
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
Cave Story
Mega Man (as a concept - only ever finished MM1)
Don’t Starve
Titan Souls

which, apparently unusually for gamers, i find quite alienating!! i’m trying to improve my vg literacy and engage with more Substantial art** though. some day i will get past the 1st stage of killer7

**i have a feeling this is the wrong way to think about it but i’m not as hep as i’d like to the reasons why

anyway thanks for introducing me to like half of my favorite animes

*well i do post on backloggd but thats a different story

babe i kind of feel like you’re holding yourself to a higher standard than you need to here, if we come off as too highbrow it’s just coz we’ve spent a long time talking about videogames

have you watched Stalker?

I was never able to complete Mega Man 1, but it’s probably the one I think about the most, and I think about it mostly just because I think it’s charming that it has points.

Just tried a couple of your games. I like the style of them, particularly the sandman one.

Ooh, but you’re forgetting to JUSTPOST.

I think the magic of this community is that, as small as it is, it still has even smaller niches within it. Proudly praise whatever you enjoy and there is probably at least one other poster who is right there with you. Unshackle yourself from the high-low dichotomy. Embrace having perfect taste (taste that is perfect because it is your taste).

i have-- oddly i related to it primarily thru yume nikki at the time because they represented the same things to me (mysticism or w/e persisting in a rational world). i should watch it again.

yes i think this is why i thought you might like it! that and it sounds like you felt a little disillusioned with games and stalker has good “hangoutitude”

I admire your top 10 list!! Well okay, I haven’t played most of those to be honest, but those I have played I also think are really cool, the ones I haven’t played but have heard of I’m intrigued by, and the ones I’ve never heard of I’m enjoying looking at. On the page for Heisei Pistol Show I read “a lung-dressed girl” which I now realize isn’t accurate and I’m filing it away for later :stuck_out_tongue:, but anyway I appreciate that that was even possible to experience on that page. I also did not know that there was a Phantasmagoria 2.

echoing JUSTPOST mentality, theres no need to feel like you can’t contribute just because you werent around during events noone anywhere else remembers or conversations about videogames the internet chose to forget

seeing pistol show, yn, etc im curious if you have much experience with rpgmaker and its once existent scene or mostly just with the subgenre of spooky rm2k games? as well as if youve given Ib a shot

my experience definitely leans toward spooky rpgm, altho just as much games made on rpgmakers vx and mv and wolfrpg as those made on rm2k. everything vgperson translated was my introduction to it basically. i only found out abt saltworld etc. after finding this forum

i keep meaning to get back to Ib and try to see what everyone else sees in it!! every time i’ve played it its just been O.K. but that might be a consequence of 80% of rpgm horror games also being horror-themed brainteaser escape rooms ever since its release
