This is more substantial than anything they ever did for Mario Maker 1, but yeah, it’s a bit weird that they decide that there’s a “final” update.

They don’t seem too interested in games as a service, but maybe because they’re not monetizing like a service. Smash is still getting updates, but they keep making money because it’s “DLC”.

My phone does this too, always puzzled me.

Anyway I am freaking OUT, that World update turns this game from A tier to S tier singlehandedly. This just became a game I could see myself still playing in 20 years.

From Nintendo’s standpoint, probably better to announce a final update than have people hounding their social media and whatever other customer interaction channels being all “MARIO MAKER UPDATE WHENNNN???!!” for the next two and a half years.

The Mario 2 power up looks pretty substantial which makes me wonder if it’s a truncated version of a mode that got caught in development hell or something.

Charging would drastically lower the number of players picking up these updates; they’re probably looking at the monthly average users with free updates and realizing the game is already dead.

Of course, it’s not something you can do by half–you can’t turn every game into a live game, but you can’t succeed unless you budget for a team to be shipping steady updates that keep players returning, which is necessary if you want to charge for updates. Delivering an update every once in a while and then watching players fall off is self-fulfilling.

just on/off blocks being in the 3d world style is a game changer for real

there’s really gonna be a surge in

a.) ridiculous smb puzzle levels where you need to be link and mario 2 mario and mario land mario to make it through

b.) same for all the new hats in 3d world style

c.)people dumping bowser, bowser jr., and all the koopalings in the same room lol

It kind of felt like the first Maker held people’s interest for longer then this one did. Wonder what specifically South with this one. Maybe just that people’s expectations were that much higher this time around which weren’t necessarily met which caused it to burn out faster? Compared to the first one at least that was a more surprising hit.

I’d love to hear theories, I’m not close to this game.

I quit making stuff in this because of joycon drift. (I’m a weirdo who liked the controller interface for the editor.) Granted, that issue has been solved, so I don’t have that excuse now.

Though yeah, I’d attribute a good portion of the burn out to the interface — lots of people really liked the Wii U’s touchscreen (and Mario Maker was pretty much the perfect use case for it). The Switch’s touchscreen didn’t feel as precise as the Wii U’s and not being able to use the TV while using the touchscreen ruins the immediate social element of the editor.

I also got burnt out by the notifications. Having a full-screen pop-up whenever I opened Course World saying “you got [x] notifications” felt a little too aggressive.

The amount of substantially new content felt somewhat anemic for a fully-fledged sequel (or, at least, very easy to take for granted). The slow pace of updates didn’t help either. People were expecting a new game style to be added, but it never came. (World Maker does look swell, at least.)

The per creator level limit was always too low. I mean, realistically speaking I’d never reach it, but psychologically speaking it’s always there, taunting us.

The curation and discoverability tools were garbage. The only way to find consistently good levels was to find creators in communities outside of the game (e.g. here).

Speaking for myself, I think MM2 was a great step forward in so many ways (killing SMB1 costumes notwithstanding), but my lack of interest in it versus the original is 100% to do with the new interface for making levels. It’s one case where the Wii U was better in every way and that matters a lot when you spend hours making one level!

If the game is “dying” so early on, I’m still surprised. The Switch has a way larger user base and in theory more potential new young players? I suppose the other side of that coin is that there are more options for playing games than the Wii U and MM is no longer a novel concept.

Based on what I see some of the MM community doing on streams though, there’s no shortage of people out there making new intricate levels with new ideas, so I think this update will be like mana to them. Seriously considering making my own world now that I don’t feel like I have to justify making my “normal” Mario platforming levels.

That for all the pushing Nintendo does for their rather uneccassary online phone app that they never added support for Mario Maker 2 for it where it would actually make the most sense of all is entirely incomprehensible to me. Like, look at the following quote from their website

Check out videos, screenshots, and original stages. If you find a stage you like, simply send it to your game with a single tap and the stage will be available the next time you reopen the game.

That’s for SMASH BROS. How did they miss this? Even stranger given that the original Mario Maker actually got a website with a similar sharing function later in its life.

by what metric is it dying? i assumed it was always still going. it’s hard to imagine any interface downgrades wouldn’t be offset by this being on switch instead of wii-u, as far as player population goes

I feel like this is the biggest thing about MM2. It was extremely novel to have such a game-like level editor, and it had the same sort of inherent joy as Mario Paint when it was first released. But, now that this novelty has worn off, you’re left with a level designer and a bunch of very poor tools for exploring others’ levels.

I also feel like Mario Maker has been codified as “a place where kids make bad levels and jerks make kaizo levels, and occasionally someone builds a fully functioning computer” in a lot of people’s minds, which is extremely demotivating when all you wanna do is make a normal-ass Mario level.

I think this game would be more popular if it had better social features, including making it easier to add friends, find levels, and modify others’ levels. As it stands, I think MM2 just showed the weaknesses with MM because the idea was no longer novel. They needed to do a better job with the structures supporting the game and I think they fell down there.

actually just read my post as if it’s my personal opinions because I don’t actually know if it’s dying or not, that’s just why I personally stopped playing

Well I think that’s all fair to say, and true for many people! I’m the type of person that’s willing to navigate through everything you mentioned, and just a lot less willing to put up with the substantially worse UI.

is it significantly worse if you use a stylus on the switch screen? i never actually played mm1
