the pickford bros blame bubsy for plok not succeeding so there was at least some hate for bubsy in the water at the time. i remember bubsy being a sign of like, platformer fatigue.
yeah i kinda realized this too when i was pondering it, like 1 level is exactly long enough to use up your ideas and not know where to go from there
game jam prompt whats the 2nd level of a game you’ve always wanted to make lol
Its also a pretty common design choice, (Was Romero the first to codify this?) to make the first level last, after you’ve learned all you could about how to make a good level for your game
i dont remember if super mario bros. 1-1 was specifically designed like that but i do know goombas were the last enemies designed which i find very charming (cuz i <3 goombas). Like they were specifically made to fill a gap, they needed to make an enemy slightly less complex than koopa troopas for their basic mook. which makes sense cuz koopa troopas are pretty complex for a 8-bit game enemy!
like plok is not a great game by any means, the difficulty is extreme and the level design is either wandering and weird or punishingly linear. but the aesthetic is incredible, and it’s just so packed full of weird ideas, and of course the music is maybe the best music on the SNES. it’s doing its own thing completely; there are few games like plok.
bubsy is one of a thousand shitty licensed platformers, except somehow it doesn’t have a license. if you told me that it originally starred cool spot, i wouldn’t just believe you, it would make more sense than the reality of it. bad sonic knockoff physics, overwrought animations, annoying voice lines, way too many levels; the only thing missing is product placement.
which bubsy 2 immediately made up for via Nerf lol
it was called the Ballzooka i remembered it earlier as the Ball Blaster but was like “that. can’t fuckin be it”
About the marketing, I think as a kid I sort of resented being made to care for another video game mascot, especially since he looked like a dick. And his shirt is phoned-in. I’m glad I never got the game or I’d have had to suffer through it out of obligation.
Bubsy isn’t in Platformer Hell, but in the almost 300 Genesis games we’ve played in Megadrive Monday it is damn near the bottom.
If you wanna hang out and play it that’s cool. Don’t trick others into playing a real bad game.
Aw poor Puggsy, be nicer to my lil pal
Whats the number 50 game of the genesis
I think Cool Spot might be my biggest nostalgia blind spot. I loooved that game and refuse to believe it is not at least ok.
Wait… Panic on Funkatron is that low too?!
I guess I cant say its not, its been many many years. But the tunes! tunes?
I just got a MiSTer and I’m about to embark on a Genesis deep dive, since I never had one as a kid. Could you link this spreadsheet? Or post a screenshot of the top entries? I wanna know what you guys considered the best!
Bubsy is not better than Pink Goes to Hollywoord or TJ&E 2 or, especially, worse than Awesome Possum
Awesome Possum can’t even run above 20 fps
Bubsy clears the high bar of “being programmed well enough for a 60hz update at least 80% of the time”
AWESOME POSSUM??!?!?!
(Kicks Dr. Machino’s Butt)
It’s a list built one week at a time (now over more than a year) by how we are feeling at the moment so stuff happens and I wouldn’t complain too much about the grandularity of it. A lot of list position by Booji is “how much more do I want to keep playing this?” And everything beyond 200 at this point is absolutely not at all.
I absolutely cannot.
I think Booji got stuck in a position where he was in a death loop in Bubsy.
