Socket’s music is excellent and that’s all that matters really
I think all snes era mascot platformers that aren’t Mario are equally good. I can’t even begin to imagine a way in which one of them could be better than any other. Aero the Acrobat and Plok are the same to me
Im popping in to support the notion that if your running into stuff in sonic regularly you must be like trying to go fast everywhere or playing on an emulator with an ant year of lag. Sonic is pretty good about letting you know when its ok to try to go fast and nearly every enemy can be popped while in a spin and the few that cant bounce you back.
Youre a gosh-dang hedgehog.
If you suspect a threat… curl up in a ball.
I personally really enjoyed Bubsy 2 as a child because it has nerf guns. Its easily 20% better than jazz jackrabbit. But still an ugly mess.
YES I will put up with SOME SHIT for a good videogame tune from this era.
I think I put socket on the flash kart and never tried it Ill have to break that one out.
correct, my bubsy is a german trans girl
i actually dont like bubsy all that much but i did have the cartridge as a kid. i think we got it after returning Super Mario RPG because my mom didn’t like turn based games. i actually think i hate bubsy a lot
ouch, damn
I like the first Bubsy okay. It’s like. Solidly mid. Not great, not terrible, just okay.
I tried playing Bubsy 3D recently though and I tried, I really did, but it may be the most unplayably bad game I’ve ever played.
I wonder if that’s part of why Bubsy has such a negative rep? If it was just the Genesis games I figure people would probably just feel whatever about them, like most mascot platformers of the era. Good enough to warrant “is this underrated???” from people but not good enough to be in the communal canon. But Bubsy 3D truly is impressively awful.
Oh and the revival game they made is fucking terrible too. Crank the voice quips to maximum to torture everyone in the room with you (and yourself).
feel like everyone who says bubsy is okay or not that bad are really only thinking of the first level and gliding on top of the rollercoasters in the carnival level
there are 14 other levels
is “bad video games with dece first levels” a galaxy odyssey type thread yet? cuz it’s certainly a thing
It took reading 20 posts before I remembered Bubsy started with a 2D game and I couldn’t fathom why Sonic was the point of comparison
to be real, i think part of the bubsy problem is the marketing for the game was kind of ridiculous. like to every avid reader of the major gaming mags in the 90’s, bubsy seemed like it was positioning itself as a big time Mario and Sonic killer. i don’t exactly have receipts on this but even though this was the era of peak “my competitor’s game fucking SUCKS” style marketing, bubsy was really in a class of its own. i mean not for vulgarity but just for like… bravado. we were all supposed to just be breathlessly transfixed by Bubsy, a far cooler and more intense mascot than The Big Two could ever come up with. then it came out and sucked just as bad as all the other platformer shovelware of the 90’s
Aero the Acrobat and Plok are the same to me
this take is objectively, offensively wrong, and that’s coming from someone who actually has a bit of a soft spot for Aero (the first one, at least- it’s the soundtrack, mostly)
i feel like you of all people should be able to understand the spirit of that post
yeah i think the issue with Bubsy is it feels very “of the time” and designed by committee (maybe it wasn’t). like even as a kid it seemed like some kind of western knockoff “we have Mario at home” kind of thing. i recall not hating what i played of the first game, but i never felt inclined to own it.
generally speaking i prefer Mario and Sonic because they emphasize “athleticism” as Miyamoto originally put it when describing Mario games. most other platformers (including Bubsy imo) fall into the DOS/Amiga thing of endless collecting of useless baubles and maze-like stages with no inertia and floaty physics.
and i remember really liking Plok, so it isn’t like it’s impossible to do that kind of thing and make it fun, but
anyway, getting to the initial point, i think Bubsy, like Bacon being Epic, and Pupper Being Chonkers, is just a symptom of the cringier millennials fixating on a idea until it becomes a kind of gospel
Plok is so fuckin weird its not even just a collectathon open level platformer cuz it starts as a more linear thing almost as like a fakeout and has the weird grandpappy plok vaudeville levels and does more with the limbless hero concept than like Rayman ever did… i dont think it fits any trend
Also it features my favorite game music song of all time.
It really feels like it was designed with the adventure game mentality of putting lots of care and attention into various failure states so that collecting all of the bad ends feels like its own reward. It’s too bad that the Wario games did that sort of thing more entertainingly, and that Shiny’s Earthworm Jim just absolutely ate Bubsy’s lunch the next year when it came to bespoke character animations in a way that the Bubsy sequel just could not compete with at all.
plok is an amiga platformer (complimentary) whereas bubsy is an amiga platformer (derogatory)
This is like… Almost all video games
See this is it right here. Bubsy didn’t have a rep as this unmitigated horror when it first arrived, it was just another one of those second tier platformer games that was barely remembered if remembered at all. Bubsy 3D was the horror that stained the name.
