This takes on a new importance if Mercury is outside of normal spacetime

The psion flayer at 33s in the trailer is Kargen, the Technocrat from the Insight Terminus strike in Warmind.

Maya Sundaresh is in Shadowkeep (not saying where!) so teasing Kargen and possibly Otzot as antagonists is :thinking::thinking:

I know more about the history of the Cabal Empire than I do about Rome help

Maya Sundaresh accidentally founding the Future War Cult is one of my favorite Destiny subplots.

[Jon To is showing his track jacket featuring a lion print in a nebula.]
It’s a lion and it’s meant to remind me that lion doesn’t try to be fierce, it just is. Just like Saint-14.
That’s not a joke.

It’s, uh, it’s too bad he’s dead right and the players are going to have to pull a miracle out of their butts to save him.

Saint is probably the most lawful good character that we’ve ever created. He loves pigeons. He loves pigeons so much that he’s named his ship after them. He’s very large. He’s very wholesome, and sometimes that gets him into trouble like the time that he died.

[Jon To turns to look directly into camera]
He’s in trouble right now, guys, he needs your help!

The shotgun is called the Perfect Paradox. It is Saint’s signature weapon. It was forged by our players back in the Curse of Osiris expansion. I wrote the lore tab for that weapon that happened to insinuate that one day players would perhaps one day be able to bring that weapon back to Saint-14. There’s a huge problem right now, though, because he’s dead – he’s still dead – and, um, we’re going to have to solve that before we can give Saint back his weapon.

Jon’s deadpan is so god damn funny I love it

Something about all the Content I’ve consumed in D2 makes me think they really want to reiterate the so-gloriously-incandescent tone from Dork Souls but they never quite have the grace

It’s kind of cute, right? I’d say it’s an iteration, though.

The thing they do that makes their spin work is acknowledging in-universe that the players/guardians behave like they actually do. They’re easily manipulated into doing literally anything with a chest at the end. They dance and play with balls in the courtyard of their stronghold.

Take this for example:

Kamala Rior climbs onto a railing at the top of the Tower in the Last City. “Guardians of the Tower!” she calls out.
A few look her way. One begins dancing at her feet. Others fool around with a purple ball.

Or this from D1, when the vanguard met around a table:

Records of the Vanguard, OS-6I 2
CY6: All right, what’s the next option?
IR: If you’re so brilliant, you tell me.
ZAV: I suppose we should have known better than to tell Guardians to stand still.
CY6: It’s not their strong suit. They’re not good at staying off my table, either. Stinkers.

Drifter and Calus gleefully remark at how easily motivated we are, and Riven fed on the players’ desire to kill her as an ontological predator.

There are a handful of instances that wink at the fourth wall so it doesn’t get away from them, but it also doesn’t predominate the tone.

The Season of the Drifter books hit on the other new theme they’re introducing to Joseph Campbell’s “Have You Ever Heard of Entropy?”: identity.

You’re not the same person you were before you were resurrected. If you’ve been alive long enough, you’re not the same person you were even in the same contiguous lifetime.

The Emissary has been reborn as awoken, then resurrected as a guardian, then came to be fused to the Nine. The Drifter has been alive for centuries and people distrust him because he isn’t who he “says he is,” but he’s been too many people to inhabit one identity.

From Ecdysis:

Wu Ming is ravenous for her stories of the Nine. He asks whether she’s met them, whether they can give a man power, whether they know a way out of this solar system. Orin cannot answer any of his questions but she cannot keep her own stories down. She is sick with them; they come out in a compulsive bilious stream and when she is emptied, she talks of herself. Of her grief. Of her restlessness. How she feels the most alive in the empty spaces between blinks. How she feels she is a snake perpetually sloughing away its skin, except this last molt is all wrong and she is caught in the ghost-throat of her old self.

Wu Ming leaves his questions by the wayside as he is drawn inexorably into the gravity well of her desperate honesty. Her confessions lower his defenses. He talks of himself. Of his fear. Of his loneliness. How he feels he is one fingernail away from plummeting into an abyss. How he feels vicious resentment every time he is brought back from the dead: He never asked for the gift of the Light.

The Shadows of Yor write composition notebook poetry about how they need to “unmake” themselves to actualize.

Destiny is a land of contrasts, lore is absolutely a narcotic, and I’m getting better at fighting the future

I just try to recall that Marathon was well written

If you haven’t watched any of his, Aztecross’s excitability and Louisiana accent are delightful

If only we could get him on the Street Fight guys, gals, nb pals

Thanks Bungie this is the perfect prologue to my drifter/crow slash fic

I sort of browse them all now

I think what most interests me about Uldren’s current arc is the sheer tragedy of it. Manipulated by his sister, and then Riven, and murdered in cold blood, only to be revived with no memory in a world full of people who hate him like poison. I empathize a lot with his (now canon) loneliness, and I hope we get some interesting stories out of it.

This is the first time in the Destiny narrative where we can witness the process a Guardian goes through upon awakening from the “outside” - our own resurrection doesn’t count, especially since we don’t talk - which means we finally get more context for the emotions and such the newly-Risen go through.

Wouldn’t it be wild if they made him the Hunter vanguard? lol

the lore book you get from the sundial involves the history of the speaker, particularly the collapse. and also includes the traveler speaking directly (well, as direct as this game gets) about what happened
