I downloaded all these cars, now I want to take them on the road. (Handheld Consoles for Emulation)

pi 5 is out might be better to do that. get that 2Xish speed over 4. seems like you could de-solder the network ports and full size USB boxes

I would love to have better hardware shoved into the PSP/Go, but I don’t want to do it myself. The PSP/Go were probably my favorite-feeling handhelds, outside of the awful analog pad thing (replace that with a Neo Geo Pocket analog stick) and the stupid power slider.

weird how these outfits are making exciting consumer electronics for once

Morbidly curious about the Funny Playing FPGA kit, that is basically a bundle of a board, screen, speaker, case, buttons and battery for $70 that lets you build a GBC.

The price seems right, but of course you need a flash cart for it. Kinda wish they had done it for the GBA instead, cover the ground for both.

I wish there were more projects that used original handhelds’ shells. There’s such a robust Gameboy/GBA/DS customization scene, but I’m just not up for a single-purpose retro console.

thank you for gently insisting on this, other frontends i’ve been using were a dozen little annoyances adding up to putting me off playing altogether. that this ‘just works’, quickly and across devices is easy to take for granted

I just spent my whole evening trying to get MinUI running on my RG351v because I thought that the designator “RG35XX” meant any model starting with “RG35” and did not realize it was a model unto itself.

The good news is that after hours of frustration I ended up figuring it out and switching to ArkOS instead, which I like a lot better than the very old version of 351Elec (now AmberElec) that I was using. But it’s also nice to just get a fresh start on all my fucked up RetroArch settings. I also deleted all of my complete libraries and just have curated ROM sets now, so hopefully that will be a good reason to play the woodboy more.

Honest to god tempted to get an RG35XX now just because of MinUI’s ability to power down instead of sleep, then boot right back into the game. BUT dang it looks a lot smaller than the woodboy and I think this little fella is just the right size.

Actually the Trimui Smart Pro looks pretty cool…i do miss the PSP form factor…hmmm…

The RG353V seems interesting – I mostly just play GameBoy and SNES games, anyway.

The only thing that kills that one for me is that the sticks don’t click. It’s not like I’m going to play Ape Escape on it, but maybe…maybe I want to. How about that? Maybe I want to play Ape Escape, on a whim…

I got to try a ROG Ally at Softmap today. I loaded up Forza Horizons 4 demo. I watched it load for about 4 minutes then crash to desktop, which seemed to just be windows complete with a very small start menu.

It had giant OXBox like candy buttons and a trash dpad.

Based off looking at a loading screen for 4 minutes I don’t think I want one of these. I know several of you got steam decks and I just can’t imagine holding something that big for that long and then…what playing an intense press all the buttons on a controller game? I am sure the novelty of it is great. Maybe y’all will come in and say “i played all of Killzone for PS2.” Doesn’t seem likely. I am probably wrong.

I think the most important thing to know about the ROG Ally is that (per Jeff Gerstmann’s experience) it gets so damn hot that it will somehow forcibly eject the MicroSD card, repeatedly. ASUS denied it was happening until it happened to a lot more people, and then they issued a firmware update to throttle the thermals, but the heat ventilation is right there by the card, so.

On top of that, the software is apparently awful for it, or at least the thing they have on there that’s meant to collect all your games under one launcher.

It sounds like the Ayaneo Odin 2 is the way to go if you want PS2, though. AetherSX2 is discontinued on Android (thanks, emulation community, for being shitheads to another emulator developer!), but the Odin 2 is powerful enough to brute force most of the library.

That or, y’know, a Steam Deck.

I’d been thinking of getting a Steam Deck or one of the other new PC handhelds and ultimately I thought “I barely even like using my Switch Lite” and that was it for me

i find the steam deck significantly comfier for handheld gaming than the either switch models are. it’s really well designed imo and i’ve had a good time playing kinds of stuff on it.
all of the things pitching themselves as more powerful than the steam deck just seem to be way too unwieldy running windows and battery life that barely lasts an hour.

rgb30 update

i’ve tried a bunch of dc games!
fighting vipers 2, gigawing 2, virtua fighter 3tb, marvel vs capcom 2, time stalkers, soulcalibur all great. sonic adventure ran full speed and looked fine, but felt kind of off? virtua cop 2 runs very slow

shenmue seems good from a quick test i did. rez struggles a bit, especially on scene changes.

it’s been a really pleasant surprise, since all the reviews were like “eehhhh dreamcast isn’t great, it’s really more of a novelty”
