indie devs are still making plenty of weird shit. i dont mind that companies like this aren’t making zany shit anymore cuz this game has got a lot of ‘heh shes sleeping i should do something’ jokes and uses gay men as punchlines.
this game can be pretty gross (when its not gross its incredibly funny, which is why i play it. also the edgy way yuri handles trauma IS ACTUALLY PRETTY BELIEVABLE) im glad now i can just play weird shit without having to worry if its something i can show a real human without disclaimers
i do feel like people have less fun with translation these days though
Having to hear homophobic jokes every time a male party member upgrades their weapon at the acupuncturist is the most 2001 ass bullshit about Shadow Hearts. I love weird translations but I’m not really nostalgic for like mid-2000s JRPG translations where they’re calling people retards and shit, it’s just aggressively edgy.
I am playing Panzer Dragoon for the first time and I’m having a blast! I was afraid of it running or playing badly, I don’t know why exactly. I think I just looked at a video of the game and thought it looked really rough, but playing it is a different beast altogether, it plays smoothly and sharply, so much so that I was able to shoot down every enemy in the first stage my second time playing it!
I can’t believe I was briefly considering getting the remake just because I was so afraid of the original’s performance, it runs great even on an emulator setup!
I have only played Orta, but I’d like to recomend Orta as well. Not sure how it stands up but I loved it as a kid!
My Xbox controller cable frayed while I was playing it habitually, and all I had was this weird Madcatz light-gun pistol controller I used to play House of the Dead 3. So with the weirdest button mapping ever, I managed to finish Orta like a fisherman fishing for a catch with a canoe paddle instead of a rod.
If I could play original Xbox games, as a SEGA fan, you better believe I’d be all over Orta (and the Xbox version of OutRun 2, and Jet Set Radio Future, and Gunvalkyrie)
I haven’t tried Xbox emulation yet but unless it’s at the level of Dolphin I don’t think I’d be able to do it >_>
Having an Xbox was weird because my dad had like 10 games and half of them were shit he never even touched, like I was lucky enough to play Panzer Dragoon Orta, Outrun 2 and Otogi because we inexplicably had them even though the only games I ever saw him play were MechAssault and Halo
most japanese xbox games were like dirt cheap at gamestop c. 2004 because they had decent sized print runs but no one really cared about them unless they posted at insert credit or wrote for edge
orta is canon imo, but afaik xbox emu is still pretty tricky (though by no means undoable, i know there are people fan translating jp-only xbox games like smt nine rn)
wondering how much of my childhood jrpg distaste is from my dad talking about the PS2 having inferior craftsmanship like Tony Soprano ranting about how Italians invented the telegraph and got robbed
I came into playing games with a Dreamcast and Xbox and I feel like I carried a slight trauma because suddenly everything I loved about games was tied up in this company that was crashing and burning, while no one my age could relate to the power of the SEGA Model 2 because they missed out on arcades so I just played Halo with people, kind of alienated and haunted feeling for a couple early years.
