On the other hand stumbling around the outskirts of a city trying to find your stash is great verisimilitude.

Update: I fucked up!!!

Blaster Master Zero review

So Blaster Master Zero is indeed exactly the same thing as Blaster Master for the NES. There’s a few improvements here and there, and they tried to make the story coherent, but overall, it plays the same as the original.

Because I have brain worms, I (A) had to beat the game, and (B) couldn’t just accept the shitty “normal ending” you get upon completing the game, so I went back and 100% all items, which lets you do the final dungeon and get the real ending.

This game is absolutely flavor-blasted with tedious backtracking, mindless dungeon crawling, and frustrating enemies that require a full loss of momentum to fiddle with before you can progress. You’ll enter a room and be attacked by eight tiny worms that’re too close to the ground for your tank to hit them, requiring you either waste a large attack, or jump out of your tank to individually shoot em. It suuucks.

I’d say the good parts of this game are the exploration, before the back-tracking sets in. Environments look good and are fun to experience for the first time, and the use of color in this remake is great. Story stuff is also fun, if inane. The DLC is wonderfiul, with Shantae being fully playable with all her usual transformational abilities, and Shovel Knight playing exactly as he does in his own game.

So yeah, don’t get BMZ unless you’re interested in replaying the original.

Star ocean: first departure R is like a budget Star Ocean 2, and as a result it might be « objectively » worse but this makes me like it more

After the first hour you’re thrown into the past and just have to travel from town to town for a while with almost no real plot happening at all; this feels less intentional and more of a result of the original game being rushed, but it rules. All I want to do is visit these beautiful pre-rendered cities, fight monsters in a simplistic action RPG battle system, dwelve into item creation, with as few cutscenes as possible

The unnecessary maximalist bloat in this game is truly something to behold

It feels like the devs made half of a standard ARPG, then someone on the team played Earthbound and everyone agreed that ordering pizzas mid-dungeons and putting condiments on your food items to make them better/worse was the best part, so they spent all of their remaining resources towards expanding upon these ideas, without changing anything about the rest of the game to account for it
And in this remake, they added even more unnecessary items and skills from Star Ocean 2

You can:

  • Cook items

There are 160 meals you can cook. All of them are useless because stores sell affordable, good healing items

  • Pickpocket NPCs. Every non-store NPC has an item you can steal. So far I pickpocketed every NPC from two cities and got mostly worthless items from it, idk, I like it though

  • Get random advice from the gods

  • Send a pet bird to a store in a dungeon or on the world map so he can fetch items for you

You get a cooler bird at a higher specialty level

  • Compose a song for your instrument and play your music. I think there are about 10-15 instruments and 2 songs / instrument. Each song = one unique track on the soundtrack

Canonically your team is carrying a pipe organ around for this purpose

You can eventually start a band and have multiple party members play?

  • Copy items with a magic 3D printing camera. Probably extremely powerful if you know what you’re doing, but all I can manage to do with it right now is taking blurry photos

  • Make some art

Your characters can draw self-portraits. Using a portrait will let you see the character’s in-game character art… that you could also see by going to the status screen. You lose the portrait after using it. I don’t get it

You can also paint cards that give various battle bonuses, or sculpt clay…

  • Lower or raise the encounter rate. This often fails and will have the opposite effect but there are no tells

  • Write some mysterious books

  • Print and sell forged bills. I am serious

  • And a dozen of other skills like alchemy and machinery, and again none of them are needed or even useful, you can get by so easily without touching any of that stuff and the game is super short for a JRPG

legendary post

Anyone remember Youpi’s first couple posts in what was supposed to be a long let’s play type deal for Star Ocean 2 that was unfortunately aborted early? Also legendary

I think about that thread often, and couldn’t remember the poster’s name until you said it

It too me a while to summon it out of my deep memory

SAO Fatal Bullet got updated today with a dumb roguelike dungeon delve mode that’s more or less Diablo but with guns but not bad like Borderlands but also anime, which might wrap it around back to bad

I can’t believe this dumb anime game has gotten nearly two years of paid and free content and I can only hope Bamco keeps supporting stupid games in the future

I hate that for like a split second you almost made me want to play this

this picture doesn’t begin to scratch the stupidity

my favorite thing is the PC version has an FPS toggle between 30 and 60 and putting it on 60 starts breaking shit in the game and if you modify the settings file for an even higher limit, doing simple things like switching weapons becomes a game onto itself and certain enemies will 180 and pump 5 bullets into your head instantly

I love it

the boring flipside is that I looked at the Switch demo today and it’s shockingly good

why does Dimps know to filter motion input to compensate for button presses for their dumb Freedom Wars successor but Blizzard can’t fathom of the idea

It’s probably as simple as, they’re in Japan and can talk to the people at Nintendo who built the thing and made The Good Motion Aiming, and in the US everyone implementing motion aiming is doing it for themselves with no backup

the same way Japanese studios struggled with American middleware for a decade for reasons like, the help documents weren’t in the vernacular

You’d be surprised how often the documentation is just plain wrong or there’s a bug and an engineer just emails Havok or Microsoft or Perforce and they say thanks, we’ll fix the bug in the next point release

But Morrowind in particular. Gotta max he humiliation on the paralyzed gropey Nords.

I read their tweets about their huge dog

in the interests of winning an argument

on the Internet

I reinstalled Paladins and did some quick A-B testing

even after turning down my OW gyro sens and actually turning up the Paladins Y-axis gyro sens, just holding my arm straight out with a joycon and moving it left to right saw my viewpoint stay almost entirely level in Paladins whereas in OW, it always drifted downwards.

hell, just now, I turned the yaw sensitivity back up from 0 in the hopes that the missing third axis was throwing the game off but nope, still drifting down (the three axis approach Blizzard and Panic Button took makes sense if you were to play handheld but playing on split joycons or a pro controller is just adding another layer of nonsense when you just need some simple X-Y movement) (yes I know translating X-Y to a thing literally floating in space isn’t simple). it’s like the difference between seeing a game with raw ass mocap data versus one that had an animator clean it up; whatever Blizzard and Panic Button did is capturing some extra/unwanted data and not throwing it out or maybe Hi-Rez maybe tried a bit harder

conclusion: I’m going to play Paladins again and turn my gyro sens way the fuck up and pretend my joycon is a mouse and queue into the gamepad-only matchmaking pool

edit: jesus christ did I really type Panic Button instead of Iron Galaxy twice
