I can't believe today was a good play (Games you played today)

the most efficient way to increase morale is just to barrel into them, it’s great

I fucking love this game. So my MGS2 ass tried to play this first five years ago like it was MGS2 and I didn’t like it. I thought it was the weakest MGS game.

Here in the PC version I went in thinking, “okay, I need to accept a mission, then I need to complete it with no kills and perfect stealth.” And I kept getting extremely frustrated and sad like I did five years ago.

Then I decided to start treating it like a shooting game, and to start killing people, and running around, and making beelines to the objective, and now… now I understand how this game is supposed to be played. It took me five years. I think I’m finally ready to accept The Phantom Pain as part of Metal Gear canon. Not story canon, but y’know…

This is also the first time I like, ever noticed the open world aspect. When I first played it on PS3, I only ever accepted missions, because I thought that’s all there was, and that it was the only way to play and enjoy the game. Here, I’m feeling fully immersed. I can complete a mission, and then just NOT go home. I can stick around. I can walk to a random enemy outpost and just fucking snipe everyone artfully and waltz in, steal a Kim Wilde tape and some cookies (they look like cookies), and then drive a stolen jeep to my next objective.

I’ve also gotten multiple easy S ranks now that I realize it’s tied to speed, and that I’m not just hindering myself with the forced goal of perfect stealth/pacifism

it’s the best, Venom Snake is the first time you’re allowed to use that entire toolkit and have it fit in your nasty story

I love Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, because I can be on my way to complete a story objective, and halfway down the road I’ll get a notification saying “SIDE OP: HUNT THE LEGENDARY BROWN BEAR” and be like, fuck Huey I guess, I’m gonna find a bear

Yeah i

it turns out the game is really fun when you use all the tools it gives you, and not just the tranq gun

I’ve been playing the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order “hey, we played the Souls games” game the past few days, and while everyone likes to point out that it yoinked a lot of things from the aforementioned Souls games, some bits of Uncharted and what have you, no one mentioned that the game also has a bit of “you know we played Shadow of the Colossus years ago too” to it.

It’s also a bit jankier than I was expecting. I’ve had people spend half of a conversation t-posing, there is some noticeable texture weirdness and on a base PS4 the load times after death can get a bit ridiculous. It seems to range from about 25 seconds to more than 75 which is kinda nuts. Really feels like a single extra month of development would have probably helped out.

It’s fucking hilarious when somebody’s all “Train with me, Boss!” and the only thing you can do is toss them around or beat them up then they get up and come delightfully close to saying THANK YOU SIR MAY I HAVE ANOTHER.

One thing I really appreciate in that regard vs Peace Walker is how they expanded the non lethal arsenal. PW has all that big development trees for all these guns and weapons they generally poke at you to not use. Arguably was little reason to fuck with anything but the tranq pistol, sniper rifles because you could make a tranq one of those, and rocket launchers to deal with the AI weapon and vehicle bosses. But MGSV if I want to play Mr. Nice Guy I can just run decked out with gas grenades, rubber bullet loaded ARs and SMG and shotguns and shit. But my favorite might be the EM mines that stop vehicles and knock the dudes out, and I’m making my fortune as a used car salesman by just jacking all the supply trucks roaming around and selling them.

How frequent is death? Is this game actually Souls-Hard?

My Friend Pedro is hitting all the right buttons in my brain in terms of, like, dopamine release per button press, but I also kind of hate it? Junk food.

It’s not very hard, but combat has enough poor tells and silly-varied timing and tracking that you’ll take deaths you aren’t expecting. It’s maybe a notch below The Surge combat technically (really) but it looks like you were having a good time if you do it right.

i got as far as i’ve ever gotten in FTL last night while i was playing and my gf was backseating my game last night(edited)

which is: i actually reached the flagship on normal and then proceeded to die horribly

it seems like taking turns with someone who is backseating you/backseating them is the best way to play, which incidentally i feel is also true with into the breach-- something about the cognitive burden of playing either of those games

maria is fun as hell and i don’t want this to come off like a “you’re playing it the wrong way” post because it’s not one but if you like the game at all i really encourage you to spend some more time playing richter at some point

rondo as richter is easily one of the essential 2d action videogame experiences imo

I probably have like 50 hours in Rondo and I’ve played Maria for maybe 30 minutes

I beat My Friend Pedro.

I liked the physical simulation aspects, where you can rotate in midair to put your gun in the right spot to score a sick kill, or splitting your aim to get two enemies

Really falls off in the last world though. Pace becomes very stop and start because there’s tons of instant death platforming puzzles. Started to remind me of a Digipen student game made in Unity, like Unmechanical. The scoring system also isn’t that much fun, didn’t feel the urge to gun for S rank.

Penultimate boss was really cool though. 1v1 with someone who can do everything you can.

I want to skip to this.

We need a galaxy oddity thread for this kind of boss fight. Shadow Link
