This ain’t a bad idea here.
Someday I’ll cut down my boxes like this
i want all of you to know that makeup and vanity set’s song called “a glowing light, a promise” from the album 88:88 is about this thread
I love this thread
You’ve got Daiso in Seattle, right? They have a good selection of compartmentalized boxes. Failing that you could dig into the tool section of a hardware store for a box intended for someone who needs to keep a collection of 40 different sizes of screw.
I suggest a big open box for unused pieces large/detailed enough to be used for kit bashing parts (build fighter/diver series kits usually have a lot of these), a big narrow box for all the weapons/shields/beam sabers you don’t use, and a box with lots of compartments for alternate hands/parts/pilot figures.
OH DUH DAISO!! the rest is great advice too, thank you
oh yeah and if you go into like the fishing section of a store, you can get plano fishing lure boxes that are just absolutely excellent for storing countless small pieces.
Humanity in a nutshell.
I GOT MY FRAME ARMS BODY ALL PUT TOGETHER now just to put all the panels on him that makes him look like a SUPER COOL POINTY LANCY BOY
for now enjoy his sassy thumbs up. his thumb would be up but i cant move it that way EVEN THOUGH THE HANDS HAVE FOUR PIECES EACH
cant wait for my master grade queeemembely to get here SO MUCH MORE PURPLE AND PINK
the frame arms gunpla came with a skeleton that was pre-assembled but i had to fucking take so many pieces off it because the instructions had me BUILD the piece
so id have all these situations where i couldnt fit pieces together and i thought i did something wrong and it NO ITS BECAUSE THE SKELETON DOUBLED UP ON PIECES SOMETIMES
like the neck had this big ball thats supposed to slot into the helmet, but the one on the skeleton was too big to fit in the head that came with the kit, adn the kit HAD ME SNAP TWO PIECES TOGETHER TO MAKE A SMALLER BALL THAT FIT INSIDE THE HEAD
ARRGH! i took apart the head first LIKE AFOOL and realized that the big ass ball sticking out of my robots body wouldnt fit in the head to begin with
i had to take apart the whole torso and put it back together
WHICH ANNOYED ME becasue there was on part where two tiny tiny pieces fit on loosely and i had to hold them still and firm with two fingers while snapping on a third piece that would hold them in place. naturally i dropped the pieces and the flew from my nervous shaky BUT STRONG grip a thousand times, and every time i drop a piece i have an anxiety attack about never seeing it again
SURPRISINGLY i havent lost a single piece yet but I HAVE A FEELING ITS AN INEVIABILITY and you can totally order extra pieces right? like those ones that are for joints nad always come in small P runners
have some more stupid skeleton, YOU CAN SEE HERE there are things sticking out of the legs THAT I HAD TO REMOVE because theres no way to slot into the body. i had so many situations where things that are SUPPOSED to fit together just wanted to frot instead
have a foot
JUST KIDDING ITS ONLY A TOE (this was a neat reveal i was like WOW THE FEET ARE SO BIG OMG THEY’RE EVEN BIGGER)
got this for veronicas birthday! im excited to put together a real grade! gonna get my gamergate bot together
DONT GET THIS KIT IF YOU HATE STICKERS
going to recreate the famous misato photograph but the arrows gonna be pointing to my giant eva test type 01 son cradled in my arms instead of my tits. best birthday ever
Real Grades come with tons of stickers but you can usually skip them and the model will still look fab.
I applied some of the decals to my Kotobukiya Eva and then removed them. I preferred the simpler look. I bet the RG Eva would be fine without 'em too.
If I wanna get fancy with a RG I’ll buy waterslide decals. Most of the time I have to get bootlegs but so far they’ve all been fine. They look so much better than stickers. If you want to get “hardcore” I can’t recommend them enough…I’ll definitely be getting some off eBay when I get a RG Eva.
With Bandai kits you can get free replacement parts in the US provided:
I had to request a replacement hand for my MG Origin kit and I think it took like…a month to arrive?
If your kit is an import and doesn’t have the Bluefin sticker on it you can probably order a replacement piece via a middleman in Japan or, maybe, a friend you may have over there, but it’ll probably be pricey.
I have no clue how Kotobukiya handles things but they have a US distribution arm so I assume it’s somewhat similar.
I’ve been very fortunate and have only lost one or two pieces and none of them were major
I broke the MG Origin’s hand okay I confess it was all my fault
If you ever lose a hand you can probably buy replacement hands – I think both Bandai and Kotobukiya sell packs of different hands making unique gestures at both 1:100 and 1:144 scale
i have like thirty extra hands already if i break one someones gonna just deal with being frankensteined
another friend was telling me about waterslide decals, and that its possible to do it with normal stickers? id have to find that conversation
so what you’re saying is you ditch the original in box stickers and get a different kind that you stick on with soap and water?
Gunpla is freedom.
Generally you put the stickers on for Real style, or leave them off for Animation style. The instructions even say there are additional stickers to use as you like, and put on as many as you feel appropriate. When its sitting on your shelf clear stickers and waterslides look about the same, but waterslides photograph better because they’re almost flush with the part.
Waterslides are a different kind of decal
On the left are Bandai’s stickers for the RG Nu Gundam. On the right are some bootleg waterslides I bought off eBay for $5ish.
The Bandai has lots of shiny metallic-y stickers that mostly go on the inner frame and won’t be all that visible. I have never seen shiny waterslides.
With waterslides you cut them out of the sheet, pick them up with tweezers, hold them in warm water for awhile – sometimes 10 seconds, sometimes much longer, I’ve had varying results with different brands – then roll them off the underlying sheet of paper using a toothpick. I was very nervous applying them the first time but now I find them easier than stickers and they look much better.
HIGH GRADE somewhere in this post are photos of stickers vs waterslides.
these are the stickers it came with, im most upset about those thirty fucking tiny dots
THIRTY DOTS !
how would i search for the wet n wild version of these
OH GOD WHY DOESNT IT TELL ME TO DO THE STICKERS AS I GO I DONT WANT TO DO THEM ALL AT THE END NOOOOO
it does kinda say what lain was saying! PUT ON THE STICKERS AS YOU PLEASE. well i fucking will
OH WAIT
STICKERS INSIDE DOTTED BOXES SHOULD BE PLACED DURING ASSEMBLY oh shit lets hope i don’t forget to reference this image constantly!
OH MORE GOOD NEWS THE DOTS ARE FOR KNUCKLES AND I’M NOT GONNA BE USING ALL THE HANDS ALWAYS okay this is way better than i originally thought
I got the Real Grade Nu Gundam last month and over the last week I have begun assembling it. So far I have the shield, a bazooka, one foot, and 4 (four) identical “funnels”. Don’t ask me what funnels are. I’ve seen Char’s Counterattack but all I remember from it are the scenes where the girl dozes off in zero g and Char saying “I’m going to do something extremely wicked.”
Yeah, that scene.
Anyway I have two funnels left to build. I’ve seen lots of people griping about how monotonous they are but they’re fine cuz this is Gunpla and Gunpla is good. Also I’m building one a day, I guess that helps eh.
Here’s a shot of an identical piece before and after panel lining. It makes such a difference, eh! Someday I will place a bulk order of Gundam Markers and mail them to all my friends.
there’s a post up at zimmerit about the crappy pre-bandai gundam toys
