Hardware To Be a God

I almost built a whole new computer just to use that Anniversary Edition Pentium a few years ago. Collectible components are a scourge.

So they’re binned 5800X3Ds AMD doesn’t want to just throw away. Good on them I guess.

Qubes basically runs on T440p except the only T440p processor capable of VT-d which is a needed feature is one very specific i7 that happens to run hot but it is luckily only 30 dollars on ebay

Halfway through the guide to setting up a pleroma instance on OpenBSD, but will need to recurse on Network Intrusion Prevention, Reverse Proxy configuration, and TOR configuration first so probably another couple months on that just to get it started.

I got a vpn client working on OpenBSD. It was easier than I thought it would be, considering all the scripts were for linux.

I was enjoying diablo iv ok but fell off cause everything just runs badly on my computer now. even diablos and life is stranges. everything crashes if I don’t close docker. for some reason firefox just has to instantly consume like 8 gigs of ram if I have it open with more than 4 tabs (I might slightly be under counting the amount of tabs). tried to get back into mw2, it ran fine when it came out but has unplayable hitches and freezes now. I guess they either added too much stuff since then that it crossed some line of playability for my machine or this thing just somehow gets worse everytime I put a better video card in it.

unless I get invited on vacations by anymore Mothers I’d Like to beFriend I randomly meet in the street I should finally have enough parts to have a new computer by like september though

Breakpoint and Diablo 4 have been crashing lately claiming they are running out of memory?? I have no idea why this would be so

did anyone talk you into running a docker thing in the background on windows, that’s one of the only times that windows won’t automatically release memory for a game

I have no idea what “a docker thing” is so I hope not

I got Arch booting on encrypted disk and then tried to update packages and the entire system broke to the point I can’t mount disks. I think I just need to re add hooks and rebuild mkinitcpio but if not I don’t even know. I am tired. I am going to give up on the possibility of loading openbsd through grub and just use bios for loading it.

Edit: That wasn’t it…

I can’t imagine cuba would have the patience for this docker horseshit. I’ve definitely got memory warnings for breakpoint. mostly I just get occasional freezes usually right when I’m aiming at someone. not as bad as mw2 though

pardon the question but did it specify VRAM or system RAM?

your 1070 has 8GB which i could see a hungry hungry ubi game eating up esp if you’re also using some other graphics task in the background. nothing to be done there except keeping an eye on what you’ve got running

if it’s RAM RAM, you have two empty slots and DDR4 is inexpensive. you could throw in two more 8gb sticks for under $50 and continue to not care about how much memory ubisoft, discord, and your web browser are eating up

https://pcpartpicker.com/products/memory/#b=ddr4&Z=16384002&S=2133

(getting faster ram won’t help because you need to run at the lowest common denominator and your pc came with 2133mhz)

I’ve sometimes seen out-of-memory crashes happen even when there is plenty of RAM left. It means a memory allocation failed, which can arise for multiple reasons, for example a fault on the memory bus.

So as usual for inexplicable/random stability issues, the power supply and motherboard are potential culprits too.

It didn’t. It ran perfectly fine last night, but it does shit itself when I try to alt tab, so lack of RAM sounds a likely culprit

my thinkpad fedora experiment ended because too many hidpi bugs and im not in the tinkering mood i was in a fortnight ago but things seem to have improved since 2006

now it has windows 11 and the date/time on wsl2 and windows are now massively out of sync from me putting the thing to sleep and that is just adorably jank i love it

My mom let me check out her Steam Deck and I caved and ordered one at the tail end of the sale. I don’t like sleeping so I’m going to try to make playing games in bed a thing.

Oh and good old mom just started a fresh save in New Vegas.

Have updated the setup a bit, with a new monitor (the previously suggested/endorsed Dell S2722DGM) which has in turn freed up enough desk surface for me to put my Logitech K780 into fulltime use.

A cheap laptop riser and a gooseneck phone holder thing off to my left ensure that I have entirely too much screen to look at all at once. Got myself a proper little command center. Cable management could use some work and I’m probably going to mount my Xbox Series S under the desk at some point, then I’ll be in business.

Decided to finally upgrade wifi hardware to the RAXE300 netgear plane-thing, even if some devices cannot handle WiFi6 atm. The 2.5Gbit phy is a bit of bottleneck, but as long as the ISP connection doesn’t deliver fiber speed/haven’t moved yet, it’s an investment in a hypothetical future setup anyway.

Also finally decided to splurge and get that Topping dx3pro headphone amp/USB DAC for the tinny thinkpad sound (and i can confirm, works nice with different/somewhat recent -mainstream- linux flavors.
