I finally psyched myself up to perform long overdue maintenance on my file server

So I make a backup (which takes ages because this enclosure is east but only working at sata 1.0 speeds)

Swap hard drives in only to find the new ones have a different hole pattern on the bottom and I can only attach two screws. With the thin sheet metal and rubber mounts the drivers are definitely flopping around. Having someone print me these adapters which will hopefully help a bit.

And

Seems like after the updating the bios, rebooting, and installing truenas scale (which is just a linux distro) my machine will no longer boot (can’t even get to the bios) if the ssd I installed the os on is connected

What the fuuuuuck

i have a perfect keyboard for work thanks to @doolittle but i’m thinking of going wireless for my fun pc

is wireless latency low enough for gaming? i feel like it should be by now but i’ve had bad experiences in the past. i’m not a counterstrike person so i don’t need it to be instant, just like…not noticeable to a normal human.

anyone got a specific recommendation for a full wireless keyboard? i can do the research on my own but curious if any of y’all have a good starting place.

same for mice - any good starting places?

For the first time in like, 12 years I’ve been forced by ergonomics to get a phone case. The Pixel 7 is just large & slick enough to be hard for me to hold one handed. I found a case I like, though, and honestly the Lemongrass colorway for this phone is pretty underwhelming in person anyway so the aesthetic loss is minimal.

i don’t do any real freak shit on the pc but i do plenty of regular gamin with some normie logitech wireless keyboard and a slightly nicer mouse that i bought to test this very issue and i don’t have any noticeable latency

keychron for both still unless you don’t want mechanical or you’re running your monitor above 120hz or so and would notice bluetooth latency

recommend linear switches for games

this is a great mouse for $50

ive got a g305 and it’s fuckin sick but I’d get one of those keychron things now for sure

how old are you/are you gaming professionally

the answer is generally yes and the case for wired is either fuck charging or angrily demanding maximum response

in which case, I’d point you to a 240/480hz display first

I liked the g305 a lot but it developed a double clicking issue. This is sadly common with logitech mice.

oh that’s no big deal

just lose your goddamn mind and solder a new switch in your mouse

wifi 7 routers are out, technically

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/tp-link-archer-be800-be19000-tri-band-wi-fi-7-router-black/6537387.p?skuId=6537387

I really don’t need one of these but I did ride out my old wifi 5 router until the same month as 2 slot 4090s became widely available and windows 11 got iMessage support so I feel like I at least have had good excuses to get all my upgrades over with

how is it?

oh sorry I just meant the bluetooth support it got for iPhone SMS last month that @meauxdal already posted about

oh yeah, how is all the icloud stuff on 11?

it is pretty decent

you can make/receive calls, send/receive sms, and there’s full notification support

texts only sync while actively connected to phone link (which notably currently only works on bluetooth - you can’t use it over USB)

it’s not revelatory or anything but it is serviceable and welcomed
