Hardware To Be a God

you can get a 4-bay for under $300 and just attach everything else to it via USB if you really need to, only the internal drives will be RAIDed into a single contiguous volume though

unfortunately RAID came right after the part of the electronics votech class where they were explaining how you could tell how much ram was on a stick by counting some shit on it or something so I was completely zoned out for that, and never really took the time after to figure out how to do that but don’t I have to fill up the drive carrier first to do that. I probably won’t be able to buy 4 22tb drives at once.

they don’t need to be 1:1, synology has their own “synology hybrid raid” implementation that will let you pick and mix while still getting redundancy out of it

you would need at least 2 to start though

yeah most everything support JBOD mode (just a bunch of disks) if you don’t want to bother with speed or redundancy

I’m currently at 99tb not counting the internal ssd drives, maybe I need to start thinking about redundancy

I don’t get the terminal fear

I’m a goddamn idiot and I’ll do shit in terminal, get my hands dirty

however, I cannot compromise with an OS that won’t play the weird porn games I’m into, so Windows it is

That is a good point. However, a lot that I’ve downloaded are 7zip files, which I think do support symbolic links. Not totally sure though.

Of course the real reason is that the packager of the roms probably wants to support systems which don’t have symbolic links. Just another way that Windows (I have no idea if modern windows has symlinks) drags everything down to its level!

it does

hell, I have a shell extension that does symlinks for me because I am an idiot

So dudes running emulators on XP are to blame I guess. Even worse.

yup – running modern Windows with an expectation of how things work on macOS/Linux is worlds apart from whatever these folks are likely doing

Even XP had symlinks! It was a fundamental part of NTFS. I doubt people are still running 98/Me

cursing them out for not adding it to exfat tho

Well crap. That explains it for real then. MiSTer’s filesystem is exFAT. Microsoft!!!

exFAT is a total failure imo, most other platforms have better support for NTFS at this point than they do this generic FAT32 successor which is missing features

that’s so many roms and isos

will always use ctrl a for tmux cos im old and rinsed screen

exFAT never tool off because MS wants money to license the patents which is so unbelievably stupid

all computers are bad tho, it just comes down to what kind of problems you can tolerate and that profile is different for everyone

At this point yeah my entire philosophy with nearly all things is just “Pick your favorite flavor of misery”
