Once again I have enough spare parts lying around to do a bastard computer build. Got an eBay special intel broadwell engineering sample xeon, extremely questionable x99 motherboard, 32 GB of the cheapest Chinese memory money could buy about three years ago, a 550w power supply, and an Evga 1070ti. I got the cheapest case I could find (test bench for 14.99) and the cheapest 20xx compatible cooler. So I guess I’ll build this thing and bring it to the office and put it on my tail net for god knows what reason yet.

Due to a special election, there is another I Voted sticker on the Xenia Transfox/Gavrillo Princip chromebook ahead of schedule

my boss gleefully shared in standup the mesh wifi system he got, so looks like I’m spending all this on Mikrotik gear

Using my ancient Acer Aspire One ZG5 has me pining for a really small but powerful (9-10" screen) full on laptop. Are those even a thing anymore?

closest you could do now would be the 11” iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard which is not cheap (though the Magic Keyboards are widely available refurbished for like 1/2 retail). they have real window management now at least!

Too sophisticated for me. I like a hunk of jank Acer plastic with fan noise and big ole’ ports.

I still find it really confusing, every time I accidentally open a second safari window I panic

I also wish you could use an external display with the screen off

Yeah, I’ve taken to using my 10th Gen iPad as a laptop now and then (I’ve got one of the Logitech keyboard cases, it’s alright). It’s not ideal, but it’s better than carrying around my big heavy Lenovo.

Samsung Galaxy Tabs have a mode called DeX that’s like their own android desktop environment. I’m sure it’s plenty jank.

I want a NAS but it’s going to be difficult to get the wife to understand what it’s good for.

Anyone know any good ways to demonstrate to someone who isn’t tech illiterate, just deeply uninterested in the hows and whys, why a NAS is good to have?

whether you use a definite article to refer to your spouse or not I strongly recommend not trying too hard to sell them on this purchase

My only firsthand experience trying to deal with a NAS (in a professional setting) convinced me to just pay for cloud storage

it’s mostly pointless. more independence from giant companies holding onto all your data, verses more power consumption, noise, and a box somewhere you’re not allowed to unplug

What do you need to convince your wife of? If you don’t have some problem to solve already just consider this a hobby project to tinker with, because that’s what it is.

Mainly I want it to be a local photo storage so we don’t have to rely on cloud platforms.
