i have this sin shine one but i’ve never used it or even unboxed it. foolish me
cool, my computer is back to not booting with the RAM expo profile. why would it start doing this again months later? I should mention that booting my computer is a problem regularly, like half the time I turn it on it’ll fail to post and I’ll have to go into the bios, exit, and then reboot and it’ll work. 9 times out of 10 that works even though I’m not changing anything or doing anything at all. 1 out of 10 times I’ll have to do it twice. today the computer just said nope, better kill that expo profile.
Yeah this shit sucks! I’ve spent more time waiting for my computer to boot than I’d ever possibly save from the speed increase of ddr5 let alone EXPO
I reached a good-enough where my computer often takes more than a minute before anything appears on the screen, but 100% of the time, it does end up successfully booting.
So I’m not touching the BIOS any further. Not changing any settings, not installing any new firmware
I was doing great until I needed the wifi adapter and now rip
mine works great but I put in the memory ratios by hand
They’ve reinvented CONFIG.SYS
I think I did this too, but it may have been something I tried with the RAM I RMA’d rather than something I did with these sticks. fuck if I remember, so I just flipped the expo switch because I don’t feel like dealing with shit right now
is there a >8gb gpu worth buying that isn’t absurdly expensive?
got four years out of this and assume it has some resale value so not the worst if so
5070ti or 4070ti super would be the only sensible step up from 8G imo but they are definitely expensive
idk if memory is the only criteria but:
intel arc b580 has 12GB, can see one for £250
(b570 has 10GB and is …a bit less? )
if you are thinking about getting it, look up the cpu overhead issue, i can’t remember the specifics now, initial reviews were pretty positive then they were tempered somewhat by the issue.
this is only the second generation of these intel cards so i think the drivers can still be dodgy sometimes (??) (altho i think i heard they are better than they were in the first generation)
amd radeon rx 9070 has 16GB and is £600, xt version is like £80 more (?)
the rx 9060 (xt?) is due to be announced next week i think, it’s rumoured that there will be 8 and 16GB versions. probably like £500+ or something (???)
EDIT: oh wait theres a version of the nvidia 5060 Ti which has 16GB and it’s about £400 so maybe the 9060 will be lower in price (???)
I’ve seen this movie before. The third generation, the reviews will say “the drivers were dodgy in the first and second generation but they’re pretty acceptable now”. The fourth generation, same deal but with “in the first 3 generations”
actually it looks like the 9070 XT is continuing to be available at close to MSRP so that’s a real option
(these are finally close enough to Nvidia hardware features that I’d consider a $200 / 25% discount on the same performance to be about worth taking, also because it’s nice to be able to recommend a $500ish GPU again)
thinking about buying some SanDisk 1tb external drives to backup my photos and music, is there any preferred models or is it mostly interchangeable nowadays?
looking at this
tbh, if one has an mitx case/is limited size-wise, the Sapphire RX 9070 (Gaming), i.e. the non-XT model is pretty much the sweet-spot right now. Silent as hell, and what a step up from the VEGA64 … the best deal of 2025 so far.
at what point did they actually become acceptable?
amd seem to be doing better with drivers than nvidia recently (???)
i enter this thread with 844 unread messages to ignore all previous conversation and barge in with my question:
suddenly getting the urge to build a new machine, and wondering if I want to spend less than ~$250 on a processor—AMD vs. Intel agnostic—for a Windows 11 desktop that will have a 5-year-old but decent graphics card, what would be a decent choice? doesn’t have to be the newest. will be using it for some medium-quality game playing, a little video editing, and a lot of word processing and tabs.
the age old question applies: are you close to a microcenter?
:((((((((((
i was last time i built a machine, but not anymore
