I’m trying to learn home servering with parts I got basically for free from eWaste.
from xeon gold 6132 specs:
what motherboard are you using, and how many ram sockets does it have? how many sticks of ram are you currently using? i hope you can find more ram and install it
It’s a Lenovo Thinkstation P720 OEM. It has twelve ram slots but so far I’ve only been able to find 11 8gb compatible ram sticks. The server blades I pulled the two processors out of had 5 each and there was one in the motherboard when I found it. seems like ideal ram sticks (64g) are like 70$ on eBay. Maybe some will wash ashore at the recycle center eventually.
That’s something I feel has been unclear in the videos I have been watching. So maybe I will make a Debian VM to run docker out of. What % of the cores and ram should I assign to the VM?
If I want to run a Minecraft server what’s the best way to expose the server to the Internet? Is that something talescale/headscale does? I have been exploring the network switches at the recycle center. This server is currently hooked to the one port on my Google mesh router.
I’m also currently on like day 1 of using Linux. Pray for me.
simultaneously intrigued with and concerned about the glut of 20-25 dollar X540 dual 10gig NICs on ebay
I’m trying to quiet the voice in the back of my head telling me to buy 3 or 4
They work great, I got a couple. One since replaced by the integrated 10G in my new motherboard but had 0 issues with the others.
They don’t support anything between 10G and 1G though
They’re pci-e gen 2 so they really do need that wider slot especially if you want to use both at the same time
ahhh OK, leaning back in my deckchair again…
This is another build I just finished:
Antec TP2-550EPS12V TruePower 2.0 550w
Asus P3B-F Motherboard
Intel Pentium III 600 MHz, 512k cache
RAM 256 MB PC133

2. Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS SB0350
3. Netgear FA311 REV-A1
4. Voodoo3 3000 PCI
5. SD-V2-5U generic USB 2.0 Card
ISA
1. CT3600 Soundblaster 16
IDE Primary
1. CF IDE Adpater
IDE Secondary
1. Lightscribe DVD
3.5 inch Bays
1. CF Card to IDE adapter
2. FDD with CF card
3. HDD
5.25 Bays

2. 5 1/4 Floppy
3. SB0250 Breakout Box
Dream machine…
Does AGP vs PCI make a difference for the voodoo3?
No it doesn’t use any agp features. So with this two GPU setup, I can use the voodoo for dos games that support glide
I always loved that breakout panel. Front FireWire is the dream.
re: proxmox anyone got good strats for sharing a zfs array on the host between multiple containers and vms that isn’t like, nfs
proper headache with permissions on a straight up mount
share with all containers able to write? no, nothing easy
each container can have its own volume to write to, simple. for a processing pipeline, I have something like:
/home/daniel/data/
incoming/
prepared/
ready/
and mount incoming
read-write into the container that gets stuff, then read-only into the next one, etc. and making all the containers run with specific user:group to match the host’s permissions on the filesystem
getting hardlinks to work is impossible so I waste a bunch of space
Currently gaslighting myself into wasting my bonus on an OLED now
wow this is awesome
and it’s already been ported as a shader to Retroarch nightly
Oh wow, that rules! Can it do interlaced lines?
just messing around with it, you would load a separate scanline shader to get 240p with the simulation
as for doing 480i/bald ass NTSC, you would probably accomplish that with a shader running in tandem as well, though I can’t speak to poking at trying to make an interlaced image (I’m guessing you want to take a VHS or LD rip and apply a proper interlacing pass so it looks “correct”)
Oh yes.
That’s super cool. What monitor do you have that works with it?
I tried it out an older model Samsung G7, which is a 240hz LCD. they say it works on 120hz and also the best results are on OLED but I haven’t taken a look at anything lower
i got a 240 oled a couple weeks ago, definitely gonna mess with this when I don’t feel like dying
