Hardcore Will Never Die But Hardware Will

Was considering used Thinkpads for $100 on ebay.

I don’t think I ever bought PC hardware new.

Edit: That’s a lie, I bought a trackball new.

Laptops are like a once every 5-8 years thing for me and I use them for a lot of shit so I want them to last, and by “last” i mean the chassis doesn’t come apart like my Lenovo Ideapad (that said, it still did a few lan parties last year and still can run UT2004 so who knows) There’s also software. It’s a shame Apple hates the idea of anyone using their hardware for anything but writing javascript because the hardware is usually really good. I have become such an apple hater after living through the pre-jobs years and getting MacAddict magazine and rooting for this underdog of a computer company.

fwiw, thought that the early M2 SSD was a goner (2015 Thinkpad) earlier this week since it suddenly didn’t want to boot with a cryptic :smirk: cryptboot message, but that way i learned how to luksOpen the partition and from there on it was a simple dpkg rescue effort …

so what i ACTUALLY wanted to say:

make that a 10 years for one of the better spec’ed ThinkPads, and without opening it once to update X or Y (because: better equip to keep it going/tiding it over for longer

This expensive GPU seems to lose its fucking mind when there are multiple displays connected. Anyone have the faintest idea how I’d go about debugging why it constantly wakes my monitors from sleep at short but seemingly random intervals? Absolutely impossible to search the internet for because all the useless AI spam results latch onto the system waking from sleep which isn’t what’s happening here.

monitor firmware maybe? 4k144+ screens have some pretty inconsistent sleep behavior

It is happening to the new 4k240 monitor that I got yesterday but it also happens to my 1440@75 and was happening when the 1440 was the only active monitor. The drivers get real pissy when you leave a 4k display connected over HDMI but have it be inactive.

Oh and it only started doing this in the last week, no driver updates or anything

yup that is true. I think you basically can’t let the display sleep anymore without the entire machine sleeping or else it’ll all freak out. unless you can move one of them to an iGPU

I still can’t figure out how to get my tv and pc to recognize one another consistently without at least resetting if not wiping windows display cache and reinstalling drivers

I could move my secondary to the igpu yeah I could try that…

AMD video drivers were way more stable than nvidia’s

God damn multi monitor support in windows still sucks compared to Mac OS in the 80s eh?

I mean, almost no other OS even really supports spanning your desktop across monitors attached to multiple GPUs from different vendors (I tried to do this in Linux a decade ago, like a decade after it worked automatically in Windows, and eventually gave up because of how broken it was), this is one of those scenarios where Windows is willing to at least gamely try to support a bunch of displays with different colorspaces and timings and drivers in a way that no other platform does, it’s just that sometimes that circus doesn’t all hang together

(and yes I have a Radius 020 Mac accelerator card somewhere in a closet)

my current favorite multiple displays on Windows bug is that sometimes Google Chrome will blow out the colors of SDR video on an HDR monitor if you’ve dragged Chrome between SDR/HDR monitors too many times, but you can always fix it by just popping that tab out of the window it’s in

why? who knows

and here i was ready to complain a lot about my (Sony) Blu-ray Player thinking

hey something happened, better boot and switch the HDMI input to MY input
w/o anyone requesting the player to do anything at all

which leads to enthusiastic triggering an input button on the Receiver remote, switching off the BR player with the second remote as soon as It Has Awoken From Its Grave, switching the input back on the Receiver remote and wait for the (Sony) TV to scramble to switch back to its 4k upscaled input (cue two second Pause for preparing itself to SHOW ME THEM 4K PIXELS FO REALZ)

… every.damn.time.i.switch.the.TV.on

:teleshrug:

a minor grievance, as i learned today! :tarothink:

This seems to have done the trick, thanks for the suggestion

I still probably need to manually move the cables around to output to my TV but whatever, at least it’s not flipping out constantly for normal desktop use now

bite your tongue

ask me about my GPU idling at 75-80w on desktop because I’m driving two displays over 60hz

any ideas what i should use my spare thinkcentre with some old (4th gen off the top of my head?) i5 for

is now the time to get into pfsense or some shit

my wsl2 mirrored networking is broken again, but it works every other reboot?
found windows surprisingly tolerable for a few years but it’s def testing my patience now lol

I let windows update do its thing in my UTM-created qemu vm running win 11 arm on my m2 MacBook and now the vm only boots to a black screen. Fuckin’ awesome.
