Hardcore Will Never Die But Hardware Will

you just gotta make it run (i.e.: not halt) and then it mostly doesn’t catch fire

fwiw my recent build was very uneventful and it’s easier than it’s ever been imo

Indiana Jones requires a ray tracing capable GPU on PC for the first time… reminds me of last year when Alan wake 2 hard required mesh shaders though they eventually patched that out. I feel like the 1070/1080/Ti are being obsoleted a little artificially quickly despite being otherwise comparable to a PS5 and even though I replaced mine last year

I’ve been toying with the idea of a “retro build” that isn’t retro yet, based on a Titan XP, that being the last GPU with no ray tracing. Figured it’s a kinda “best of generation” and a good marker of a before point.

the vram allocations on high end cards since turing are a crime imo

used 3080 tis are going for under $500 now, but they’re deliberately at 12GB, and used 3090s are still going for ~$800 despite high end people upgrading ahead of tariffs

my strat was always the X080 ti when used prices were 1/3 the msrp

i wonder when the 2080 ti will be truly obsolete for a new game? maybe it’ll make it to ten years

hence why the 4090 was, appallingly, their best value card in the last 5 years

What monitors are good now? OLED seems very close go being there but still a little iffy for desktop use, microled doesn’t exist yet, and I’m tired of IPS glow

I upgraded from the Dell Gsync 1440p display I got in 2016 to the cooler master gp27u (miniled) earlier this year because for a while it was like the first really good sub-$1k 4k 144hz hdr display that did what I wanted. I’m pretty happy with it but the firmware can be kind of hinky about sleep and it absolutely requires calibration with the windows tool though I think almost all hdr monitors do

also, windows is still a little weird about mixed hdr/sdr and mixed pixel density in multi monitor setups, though it’s better than any other platform is at that by now (Windows 10 was hideous on high dpi setups imo)

also also, I think 4k 144hz hdr (ie requiring DSC with DP <2.0) still counts as 2/4 of the displays that an nvidia GPU can drive fwiw

how is scaling on macos? i can never tell if the 5k-insistent are for real

which is why I waited until Zen 4/5 parts with motherboard DP 2.1 so I wouldn’t hit the limit (I’m running 4 at my desk plus my projector which because of nvidia cheaping out on DP 2+ on Ada counts as 6)

scaling on a native Macbook display or on an external high DPI display is fine and has been better than other platforms for a while, but it handles mixed configurations much worse still (you have to toggle some system flags to get subpixel antialiasing back on standard DPI monitors and their SDR/HDR swapping barely works)

fwiw my brother has the cheapest 1440p LG OLED and loves it but it is a little barebones to get the panel at that price point. no onboard KVM or hub or USB charging etc.

you can get pretty good miniLED 1440p high refresh displays that are probably 85-90% of an equivalent OLED with a nice 2-300 dollar discount if you want to trade the extra pure contrast and motion resolution

the problem is that AMD 16G+ cards are still priced like a business expense, and they make a much poorer one

7900XTs are routinely within 5-10% over/under the cost of a 4070S right now

I’m not going to sit here and pretend that the 7900XT is as good a total package as a 4070S but if you just want raster and do LLM on the side, it’s a fine purchase if you need memory more than raw compute

anyway I’ll remember to chime in over the weekend as I yell loudly about how bad AMD cards perform in UE games as I suffer the casual UE5 dress-up phone game Infinity Nikki and casual UE5 competitive shootman Marvel Rivals (seriously, in the alpha, someone using Dr. Strange’s portal is the worst I’ve seen any game in recent memory perform)

I do not understand how anyone doing anything productive on their PC doesn’t default to 4k or more

Because it makes everything really tiny and ui scaling often fucks shit up and I didn’t have a gpu really suited for 4k anything

Yeah this was a pretty big hassle either when I was running a hdmi cable to my tv or using the Steam link.

PC speaker/microphone suggestions, please. I guess I’ll also take headset recs, but…
