Hardcore Will Never Die But Hardware Will

did y’all know computers are quieter if you put them on the floor further away from your ears?

actually not sure if this is a terrible idea but i’ll check the dust filter for cat hair in a week or so

I really wish someone would improve the Lovelace bios editing support to enable actually lowering a fanspeed floor and making it still pass checksums rather than enabling you to just swap oem bioses, because my 2 slot 4090 would actually be very very quiet most of the time if it had a zero rpm mode (and it’s totally fine as is even so)

mine’s surprisingly not too bad you know (and we have a long haired cat) but you do have to remember to clean those filters every couple of weeks

Can one buy bulk ssd/flash external storage for reasonable price yet? Just had a 5tb hdd start sputtering and had to make some hard choices about what to delete when backing it up

A reliable tough hdd is another option

Rn I backed it all up to a 1tb drive so it’s not urgent I guess. I basically ditched my whole steam installs though which is painful when considered how long those take to download

i mean define bulk and reasonable but you can get a 4tb sata SSD for ~$200

hard drives are about half as much per gb looking at 4tb drives, gets much better from there

depends on what you’re using it for but non-game media goes on hard drives for me

this seagate is 10tb for $160

Flash is unlikely to get any cheaper anytime soon so if you want it get it now

It was so cheap last year that manufacturers were struggling to make money so they cut production and prices are starting to go back up

a lot of win 11 definitely has an “all the people who objected to this stuff finally retired or were fired” vibe to it in places… like there’s a lot of stuff in there where you could accuse Microsoft of getting away with something, except those critics mostly don’t care anymore.

and it’s simultaneously way less bad for modern dev (out of the box, at least – 10 was fine with a lot of additional tooling) so it’s harder to muster the energy to dislike it

if you use teams for work you can have the win11 teams, classic teams (work or school), and new teams (work or school). the new! part of the icon also doesn’t go away so where you used to be able to scan for something other than the icon for notifications you have to actually look at it. inanely bad

on the home side it’s way less prone to freak out about HDR and other video switching/window management but sheesh the enterprise side is fucking terrible. the old surface people must have been viciously mocking this shit until they launched a dual-screen android phone and got booed out of management

i changed my OS region to the UK and lol’d when i got a popup the next time i opened excel telling me i can use ODT formats instead

if only getting iOS’s antitrust compliance features worked that way

i had to figure out how to change my keyboard back to put quotations marks back on shift-’ from shift-2. i assume everyone does this? or they need “@” on their pinky?

I got a tv as big as my wall now. I only want to watch every movie in uhd remux form now. tom cruise is gonna have to preface every movie with a personal thank you from him to get me to drag my ass to the theater ever again. probably a 65 inch tv would of been fine lol

gonna have to get a plasma emulsion shader for rpcs3 and xenia now

there are two types of UK keyboard users: non-British programmers incredulously remapping the layouts, and the poor souls who’ve never been given a fair go with tilde in the right place

I finally cracked and opened the Apple Store page to look at getting a M1 Air with a sane ANSI layout: it’s been discontinued. a guy in Aldgate is selling a second-hand non-UK one and it’s too much hassle. I need the proper return key. pls

yeah i went full ansi years back. every so often have to do ctrl+shift to type a £

i use blender for modeling, and most stuff i make games in has a linux build now. i think the only reason i have windows is games, and if valves proton is good enough to bridge that, well shoot

I will gladly sit here and argue that if a game won’t run under Proton, it’s probably not worth playing

this category seems to be wholly populated by games with restrictive anti-cheat (though somehow Helldivers 2 happily runs in Linux despite GameGuard)

I remember being amused in specifically 2014 that every new release I was excited about would run under Linux either natively or with out of the box Wine… never happened again

anyway here we are a decade later

What do I use to control fan speeds from windows 10 without rebooting and messing around in the bios

I found some open source one but I opened it and it started giving me a tutorial on customizing the ui layout panes so I immediately deleted it
