Hardcore Will Never Die But Hardware Will

someone can check me on this but that additional 8-pin connector is so common these days that I suspect the power supply is actually mis-listed as lacking it unless it’s a mega cheapo brand (but you really should be just buying from recognized brands if you’re unfamiliar with this stuff, cutting costs on power supplies is trouble)

if you’re doing something that requires a second EPS connector, you are doing headass shit to your CPU

the top of the AM5 stack is claimed to have a 170W TDP (or whatever bullshit benchmark AMD is using). so maybe if you were using a 7900X/7950X at full tilt for an extended period, I guess? otherwise, everything else is within a 125W power envelope

I feel like they throw it on there because it would probably cost them more to re-engineer whatever X670 board they’re cutting down from than to include it

It’s an old-ish compact-ish part that I bought in 2021, so I wouldn’t be shocked if there was some compatibility issue there, but the guy at Microcenter was so cock sure that it wouldn’t work I started just assuming it would. Google and Internet randos agreed with @notbov too so I’m willing to roll the dice on it.

Why does every PC guide go “well if your budget is X tier…”

Like… who makes decisions like that? I want the Toyota Camry of PC gaming. No bullshit. Can be kitted out to be nice for a little more. Will get me everywhere I need to go. Etc etc.

is there any reason a laptop battery would lose 30% capacity in 24 hours

(tbh, it doesn’t feel like it’s getting any less running time so i might try the gauge reset)

some cells failed the battery management systems criteria so it’s pretending they don’t exist

i have a mate who’s offering me his old one at what i anticipate will be a price way below market rate… surely it’s still worth it coming from a 2015 minspec MBP right?

Yeah it’s still worth it. I did a similar upgrade at the time from a 2016 dual-core MBP. You should notice a big speed improvement, plus the keyboard is more reliable

powertoys shipped a feature for the keyboard manager that allows chording but the latency is, uh, noticeably worse than qmk on an atmega32u4

do not use their keyboard manager, it runs in userspace and prevents keyboard input from using regular interrupts which is nuts and should never have shipped enabled by default

i remembered that (got work to let me use regedit for making caps into ctrl) but thought, you know, maybe they’d fixed it since. nope

The deeply discounted Surface Go 2 I got last Black Friday has really worked out for me as a portable Email and Word machine for my specific use case. Last night I completed a freelance job while I was cooking dinner, great stuff

they’re killing off windows subsystem for android already

wait wasn’t that one of the selling points for windows 11?

only if you think being restricted to Amazon’s app store is a selling point

yes I know people were instantly sideloading apks, we know why it died, especially now that Google is shipping their own game player (let’s be real here, you’re only using Android emulation/translation if you’re either a dev or playing a game)

sick a gauge reset shows we’re on 50k still

dolby vision playback with your pc handling it and sending it to any hdr10 display seems like a just a matter of time thing

I know that’s the business model but it’s still hard not to resent that Apple charges $200 for this
