hard to be a caveman (dark souls 2 first timer thread)

A cute thing about scholar is that the belfry luna experience is preserved offline - you get invaded by a generic bell keeper

lost bastille

Itā€™s so fucked up that the looney tunes door is a SHORTCUT if you run off the ledge above it from the opposite direction like I NEVER EVEN THOUGHT TO DO SOMETHING SO SUICIDAL

Now that Iā€™ve played more of the game Iā€™m sorry but i have to say youā€™re WRONG!!! no but seriously the heide knights show up in the same number of locations in scholar as they do in vanilla ds2 if the three billion dark souls 2 wikis are not lying.

the lost bastille one is in sinners rise now, so basically they just moved him a bit, and the shrine of winter one is now in the gutter and actually uses the items he drops. i was really surprised to run into that guy down there too. instead of the forest of fallen giants one there is a bunch of them in heides tower. theyā€™re still wandering!

Hi friends. Thanks to everyone in this thread I was convinced to download og edition on my laptop. I played it for 12 hours on saturday and 12 hours on sunday and now im standing outside the final boss. I think Iā€™ll do the dlc before I finish cause Iā€™ve never done it.

Iā€™d never beaten this one cause the fatigue kicked in real hard in the late game on both my previous playthroughs. Turns out with one of those I was literally one boss away from the end oops.

I agree with many opinions already stated eg this is the most ps2-era fromsoft type souls game. Itā€™s by the developers of Evergrace. There are some real kinda wonky inconsequential zones in here, and the scale of representation seems super warped and inconsistent. I like it! But especially as you approach the end it kinda ramps up the epic E3 trailer imagery in a really pathetic way and you start feeling like youā€™re playing some EA-developed souls game.

I think the whole adaptability system and the much less binary animations are really cool and interesting, and they really do imbue this one with a different flavour than the other games. Also the various animations you can choose for healing with estus vs lifegems are a tasty calculation to make mid-battle. I appreciate the heavier, treacley feel and that it even extends as far as the speed of health bar replenishment rules.

There are some ace levels though. Everything down the hole fucking rocks. I think the opening castle level is excellent. That little misty woods zone! The crypt zone is awesome too though I wish it were bigger.

Anyway thanks for everyone in this thread. I certainly wasnā€™t expecting to play this game anytime soon and did not plan for it to be my entire weekend! But Iā€™m happy it was.

im on Earthen Peak right now and i keep being like ā€œdamn this is a good levelā€ no really cool observations itā€™s just neat. A very good DnD dungeon-ass level, you can whip thru it in like 30 seconds if you want but theres lots of optional diverticulae. Those headless puppet soldiers are bastards though if they get you in a combo youā€™re basically screwed. and dont get me started on the sexy pyromancers who can just cast ā€œFuck Youā€ and oneshot you if you get too close

This and No-Manā€™s Wharf are alltime great Souls levels imo. I love that the original version of the wharf conspicuously didnt have the ā€œkick a bridge downā€ shortcut right where it should be and then Scholar added it. like if someone very slightly adjusted your pictures & moved your furniture and suddenly the feng shui was just  :ok_hand:

Ohh I was wondering about that shortcut in this playthrough! I thought maybe I had imagined it because like you say it looks so naturally like a shortcut location. Having previously played both versions once each, the solitidy of the world is even more difficult to get a grasp on. It is so right that this is the one with two versions that kinda blur together and neither can easily be considered the definitive one

we havent even yet touched on the major new character Scholar added (the titular Scholar) who always scares the fucking shit out of me when he first appears

YEAHH CHEAT THE GAME & YOURSELF (unironic)

thereā€™s a dupe glitch for PS3 Demons Souls thats so trivial & useful it might as well be a difficulty slider, i started a new character in that too cuz fuckit and have basically opted out of managing healing items & upgrades

I didnā€™t even get 2 minutes into demons souls before I was told how to duplicate items

hell yes, cheating in video games is good for you

makes sense the alternative is that you try to actually engage with the weapon upgrade system and lose your goddamn mind

Man fromsoft are fucking good at videogames

i love fighting thru a rly fuckin hard series of encounters and shitty traps just to find a bunch of useless gems for a character build iā€™ll never make. Tough but fair

I technically cheated in stalker the first time (150 lb weight limit instead of 50) to get me through and every time I played a mod or restarted the game after I did normal weight, I donā€™t care getting help through something the first time so I can play it hard mode later

it really does just help to break games immediately like i can always put them back together after & see how theyā€™re ā€œsupposed toā€ be played. the alternative is usually ā€œI didnā€™t finish your gameā€

exactly, everyone should be SOOOO happy that Iā€™ve finally tipped the scales to ā€˜I actually want to play thisā€™ as opposed to the dozen other false starts Iā€™ve had with these games

im VERY happy theyre honestly just good ass video games i think the hardcore gamer shit is nothing but damaging to their rep. An easy mode really wouldnā€™t have killed any of them

No-Manā€™s Wharf: first pass, methodically kill every goon, light torches/pharaoh stone/open shortcut door/memorize the layout. second pass, benny hill the bastards all around the place and watch from a safe distance as they try to unfuck their pathing getting stuck in the water or running into a wall trying to enter a door. beat Flexile Sentry on the first go and with not much time to spare!
