I started replaying Reach yesterday on Heroic now that the audio is fixed. Although I already beat it twice at that difficulty when it came out, I’m still dying a fair amount. But most of that is because I’m messing around trying unusual weapons and abilities and approaches to situations. I’m enjoying it a lot.

I’m noticing the game heavily rewards finding a precision weapon and picking off everything at range if you want to minimize deaths. The AI rarely stays in cover to force you to flush it out nor assaults your position in a focused manner, it just kind of wanders outside towards you. And the shielded enemies don’t realize they should take cover to regen when you’re sniping them either. So the gameplay is a bit more one-dimensional than I remembered. This was peak FPS PvE for 2010 and still mostly holds up but I can see more clearly now in what ways Destiny and Doom 2016 have surpassed it (even as Halo Reach remains better in other ways, especially vehicle scale tiers all combined together in the same arena)

However, the par time goals they added in this remaster are a nice counter-incentive to the sniping problem so playing for those might force the gameplay variety that I’m currently introducing by being reckless.

Someone play Halo 3 online with me. I’m back in my element with this game and I just need some people to fuck around with in 4v4 and 8v8. Game is as good as I remember. Zero nostalgia, all bliss.

I keep thinking I’m done with Halo 3 for the day and quitting out.

Then I decide that just one more match would be a good idea.

The match is amazing and I decide to not quit out of the queue for the next match.

A few hours of Halo later, I decide to quit for the day.

After quitting out, I decide that one more match couldn’t hurt.

hell yes im always down to coop legendary pc

tbh im fine with all the lore at this point, like yeah 343 era lore has not been like particularly good or well written but whatever, it’s just more material for fanfics and future works

I was watching this halo fangush video that is like a ‘halo appeal for babies’ type intro level youtube thing (like he thinks that ‘emotions’ are somehow counterposed to critical analysis, as if this isn’t art we’re talking about)

but anyway this video does have a very concise explanation of why CE Anniversary graphics are shit

look at that disney cartoon bullshit

on a related note i watched a halo 4 video today and wow they were really into the colors blue and orange in 2012 huh? i know i must have made fun of this at the time

look at that marvel bullshit. just this for 8 hours

ahhh I want to play halo. idk if I can right now, but I’d like to be considered a halo buddy. this is my steam profile if anyone wants to add me https://steamcommunity.com/id/vodsel

that vid got me interested in playing Halo CE just on the emotional tugs alone. halo is fuckn good!
i’m really interested to revisit Halo 4 when it comes to the MCC. i hope we get halo 5 too, cause I never played that one.

i was just reading some of the Halo 4 cutscene and level dialogue transcripts on halopedia

I forgot how that whole game is like cutscenes

INTERROGATOR: Do you think maybe… you fucked up?
HALSEY: We did what we had to do. Asshole. Jackass
COMMANDER: Hey Master Crap, I said follow my orders!!!
CHIEF: [badassly] No.

and gameplay

CORTANA: Chief! Something’s going on on the upper deck. Get up there and shoot stuff.
CHIEF: Got it.
[something explodes]
CHIEF: Leave the oven on?
CORTANA: It’s a Meepmorp! Shoot its eye!
[Meepmorp dies]
CORTANA: Look, it dropped something. A data pad. [pause] The Didact…

like it’s just so disjointed and confusing to understand on a basic level any of the character’s moment to moment interactions, and chief talking during actual gameplay just fucks with the vibe so much

I don’t think there is even a satisfying explanation of who the villain of that game is. People just start calling him the Didact. That’s when it felt like Halo was becoming more about the books than the games for me, cause I guess Didact was introduced in one of them.

yeah i would like to play some halo

Didact is first mentioned in game in Halo 3, but only by the initial “D.” in the Terminals on a couple of levels, so you have to do some real digging. he’s also mentioned in the halo CEA terminals but that’s after 343 takes over the IP

his introduction in Halo 4 is… lacking. like he literally just appears and everyone knows his name??

that said I do actually appreciate that they put that stuff in the gameplay proper but they just botched it like hell

Is Halo 3 the only one with nods to Iain Banks’ Culture novels in some of the terminal readouts?

I’m beginning to think that was a dream I had.

The Didact’s character and motivations are explained in a trilogy of shitty books that take place like 100,000 years before Halo lmao. I read them diligently in the hopes that somehow Halo would still be good post-Bungie but nah 4 still sucked on release day
