HALO

Rumor had it that Bungie had pitched Microsoft on an official collaboration for their 30th anniversary and Microsoft declined but there’s a new D2 trailer this morning where they’re showing off legally distinct versions of the magnum, BR, energy sword, and ghost.

Hell yeah.

The magnum appears to replace your grenades with Halo frag grenades that can be used to frag jump.

I also adore that they’re being this cheeky about it.

I still find all this super fascinating as someone who was too young for extremely specific doom fandom and too old for extremely specific halo fandom

the effort that goes into reproducing these mechanics is wild

I guess I get excited about playing facing worlds with pulse rifles and teleporters

D2’s sandbox is Halo by way of Smash/Mario Kart so these may end up being merely one option but I’m giddy nonetheless. I’m amazed that they left the zoom exactly as it was – no sights. There’s already another weapon that lacks a hip fire aim penalty so I wonder if these will too.

They’re also adding Marathon and Myth weapons and gear. (And I suspect diegetic reasons for them to exist – there’s already a Marathon-themed weapon.)

I got the Halo magnum (Forerunner) and battle rifle (BXR-55 Battler) and they are perfect

The closest any game has come to just including the CE magnum

I want to play this but don’t have gamepass. I think I will wait a bit for co-op and level selection being added to the game in the future.

no co-op, no care

The reviews are promising and it looks good and I can already play the multiplayer. It just doesn’t sound complete to me and I want to pay for gamepass at this time. I’m not trying to be a bummer in this thread, I hope everybody that plays it today enjoys it.

the xbox app is stuck on ‘update available’ for me, can confirm it’s still complete dogshit

yeah, using the gamepass interface on an xbox and using the interface on windows makes it very obvious that they treat windows users as second-class citizens.

and internally they’re likely using the low adoption rate on windows to justify not putting any more work into it.

it reminds me a bit of prime video – it’s treated like a side-benefit of prime rather than something that will bring in new users, and its shitty interface and user experience never get any attention for improvement.

Maybe if each area wasn’t a single color they wouldn’t have to paint objectives in BioShock gold.

Based on the gravitas they implied for press E to insert chip and the opening cutscene’s lack of subtlety I believe this too will be a prestige videogame story.

Crashed to desktop at the first boss for reasons unknown to me. Didn’t throw an error.

Definitely tapping out until I can play with a friend.

Oh, and I played until I got outside because I wanted to see the skybox. Joke’s on me.

I played up to getting outside as well. I like it. Looks good, runs good, had a lot more fun with it in so far than I did during the last two games (finished 4, played maybe three or four levels of 5) so it looks like they finally figured out how to make a good Halo campaign.

Very snappy. Feels good and responsive but still feels like a Halo despite all the new little wrinkles. Kind of interested to see how they develop Cortana in this one. Hilarious to me that they’ve turned her into this seemingly hyper-focus-tested ideal girlfriend of lonely male nerds. She’s just so earnest lol. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to handle a whole game of that.

I can’t believe they put AlienSoldier-impossible bosses in this.

It’s no grappendix but it seems pretty fun nonetheless

feeling myself bouncing off this one once the scale of the open world chore list made itself known, it plays well, guns are okay, writing is so-so, but man I don’t think I have it in me to self-direct taking over far cry outposts until the game tells me I’ve won, I guess this is why they got the “escaping from an exploding thing” setpiece out of the way at the start
