this is based on a demo build so who knows
I hate this final weekly challenge. Gotta get 5 kill streaks in Fiesta and that is very hard to do with the nature of the mode. I’ve gotten 3 in what feels like 20 matches and I am tired of killing four players and then getting shut down by an asshole with a gravity hammer.
i like playing this game but fuck everything they did surrounding the battlepass and cosmetics and challenges
The unskippable player intros at the beginning of matches are pretty clearly designed to induce fomo. I (mostly) successfully ignored cosmetics in League and Dota and had a great time but the system here is really bad because I’m constantly reminded I’m a basic bitch Spartan and the “natural” unlock rate for absolutely any customization is glacial.
And even if you have monk-levels of focus and personally ignore the challenges they still warp how your teammates play and encourage them to do really stupid things.
I don’t even think it makes good business sense – most mobile games shower you with gifts when you first start because they know they need to at least appear generous to hook you. A player uninterested in cosmetics isn’t suddenly going to pay $20 for a fancy skin if you give them no customization options – they’re going to quit playing because the system is so in-your-face that they’ll conclude the game just isn’t for them. It poisons the well even for players that like the game. Why?
After playing 100s of hours of League I was willing to pay for cosmetics because the game provided consistent entertainment and I didn’t mind giving them a few bucks for some hot looks. If I hit the same playtime in Halo I can’t imagine making the same decision – the progression is so actively hostile I don’t want to encourage them at all.
EDIT:
Also when you do unlock cosmetic options (like colors) they only apply to literally ONE armor set. I unlocked the Samurai armor and have no way to customize it. Oh and the fucking left and right shoulder pad are separate unlocks in that event track.
I got “Cut Vacuity in Twain” as my penultimate weekly challenge. I looked it up just now and it’s supposed to be one killing spree in Fiesta, but for me it was five. So I did that, and then I had to get another five sprees in the capstone.
I used hammers, rockets, and swords for a lot of them, but I also scored a few with the sidekick and disrupter pistols. They’re pretty good at medium distances (behind teammates) because they’re more accurate and faster firing/reloading than a lot of the big awkward clunker guns.
I’ve never done any sort of battle pass or event thing in one of these games so I think the novelty helped. My incentives are skewed, but I have a decent looking Halo man.
i still have not opened this game
My playstyle.

I have played the multiplayer for 30 hours which makes this game by default one of the ones I have played most this year.
I’m working on finishing the “capstone” challenge which is 5 killing sprees in fiesta. It hard! But Ive got 2
It is curious to read people talking about battle pass and multiplayer objective design frustration in Halo when those are what seem to most put people off Destiny.
It’s ironic, too, because the Halo people by most accounts got the sandbox and fundamentals closer than ever but the metalayer ruins that too.
The campaign might change my feeling but I have no particular affection for Halo’s sandbox now. Where a 3-shot burst rifle in Destiny may have been “like the Battle Rifle” before now my kinesthetic FPS sense is firmly framed in D2’s archetypes e.g. a 600 RPM auto rifle, a 180 RPM scout, etc.
It’s hard to tell if Infinite is having “a moment” or if they’ve well done shot themselves in the foot out the gate.
unless they make the f2p stuff more bearable, it’s this. people are gonna play this for a while because it’s fun 2 play but i think it’s already getting old. there’s no real “meta” to hang ones hat on and the progression is abysmal.
i’m pretty sure this is the only week i’m ever going to complete all the challenges, if I can even do that. if i end up missing this one i don’t even know if I’ll come back to the game, it’s so frustrating trying to get these extremely difficult goals
the worst one i did was “shock 4 enemies at once” which means (a) having the shock rifle available to you, and (b) somehow getting 4 people clustered together in one spot. that ended up being me playing big team battle, which i fairly dislike, and hunting for the one gun that could do this reasonably then camping near the capture spots and just hoping 4 people clustered together. which happened and i got it!! but meanwhile i was completely useless to my team and doing highly artificial things to meet a goal that was mostly chance if one could meet it anyway.
i didn’t kill any of those 4 people btw, and neither did anyone else. i shocked them once and died.
oh and i swapped that particular goal out twice to try and get something reasonable. one was like, 10 or 15 headshots in fiesta which now seems highly reasonable, then another was “destroy 3 enemy wasps” which i’ve barely seen wasps much less destroyed them. stupid game
but then i just played a match where i had a grappling hook and a sword and i managed to grapple onto and murder 3 people in a row so i guess this game is great
Don’t get me wrong, I have maybe the highest tolerance for bullshit multiplayer objectives of anyone I know (e.g.), but these Halo challenges are syzygy-type chance occurrences that you can’t force to happen and they’re the basic progression.
“kill an enemy on a killing spree” was the funniest/stupidest one now that i think about it. i lucked out and got it in about 5 matches but uh
imagine having to have the following:
bad bad bad
THIS GAME IS LUCKY IT’S SO FUN TO PLAy, SOMETIMES
this is one of my parlor tricks, actually, i used to fix every timed brawl match to go to sudden death as a meta-game and keep track of kills in D2 for this purpose
mostly dig this but yeah make the grappling hook a thing you have all the time and delete all of the mmorpg grind shit and we’re talking
