Guilty Gear Strive is the best fighting game I've ever played

TURNS OUT DOING THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA. SOMETIMES YOU MUST SUFFER FOR YOUR DREAMS.

ACCOMPLISHED OFF THE BACK OF A 5-1 POT MIRROR SET

I HAVE HELPFULLY CIRCLED THE IMPORTANT PART. VERY IMPORTANT, YOU MIGHT SAY

played a bunch of matches with @lonelyfrontier and @HOBO last night and i took a match or two so i like this game again

ā€œmillia requires actual thought to playā€ is a sentiment i will hold on to for a long time

I played two matches of this and it’s very pretty. I don’t understand video games though.

decided that i’m finally done with strive. uninstalling it, then right clicking on each guilty gear i own and selecting ā€œremove from my steam accountā€

had enough of its bull shit

i have had this game for over a month now; bought it on release day. that goddamn fishing mini-game STILL refuses to give me ā€œblue water, blue skyā€

all i want is that one song. it will give me anything else but that song. arcsys is stealthily updating the game with new avatar colors just to make sure i don’t get ā€œblue water, blue skyā€ for me to listen to when i’m bouncing back and forth between 10th floor and celestial

daisuke ishiwatari, that demon in human skin, is laughing as my pixellated avatar fishes out faust shoe color #7,903, when all i want is one fucking song

GIVE ME WHAT I WANT

THAT’S NOT WHAT I WANT

GIVE ME THE SONG!!

I briefly hit floor 9 today! My aspirational floor was 8 when I started so I feel pretty happy I belong there already. (Maining May after all, sorry geist)

There’s a curious perspective trick where anybody 2 floors or more above me is a monstrous combination of immovable object and unstoppable force. Then gradually instead of me fundamentally improving (I’m just learning more simple tricks after all) it’s everyone else that alchemically converts into fair opponents

Having tried every character now the only other character that I feel clicks is Millia but I have nowhere near the dex to progress with her. Sticking with Pot until a DLC character works for me.

Hitbox is on it’s way

i apparently have more success with burger girl ramlethal valentine, but i don’t feel like i’m playing the game with her. i feel slow, like i’m learning less, and my neutral is (from what i can tell from getting rolled over and over by celestial grade players) much, much, much less consistent because my head isn’t in it. even if i am worse with millia and don’t have the dexterity, she’s the only character that clicks for me too so i pretty much need to play her in order to smell the game. i feel like playing millia makes it easy to lose gracefully and that’s like irl character building. i’m ok with having to work for my wins in light of that

at least until jam comes out, anyways

like every character in this game is good but the unfortunate truth is that there are four characters that are easier to win with than everyone else

meanwhile down in 5f scrubland people don’t want to press start to begin the match or finish sets when i play millia for whatever reason ._. i wanna keep climbing but this keeps happening to me every time i jump online… and the people i play sets with regularly are universally way better players than i

It feels like Pot is the most fun to lose with (and win with) for me, just because it’s so clear to me what to improve. Also his bad matchups are just really skewed and you kinda go in expecting attritional defence and it’s more satisfying when you breakthrough because of his inherent limits. Playing as Nago or anyone else made every COUNTER feel like a cattle prod shock I can’t recover from.

I’ve also noticed a lot of May trolls(?) who just spam sweep and HS moves and then end with the pink whale super. They don’t seem bothered when I patiently wait to punish so who knows what they’re trying to do. Floor 6 is weird.

Not pictured: the 70 ultimate techniques I threw out to condition my opponent prior to this…

I’m so powerful

Sorry no song but how about some concept art of Faust’s sneakers

I’m ok with that. I know everyone is supposed to hate May, but she was my primary backup character back in the X/XX/#R days, and whenever I feel like having a backup character in this game it’ll be May again.

Well after about 300 attempts I finally made it.

Unfortunately the set that clinched it for me ended with a VIP May teabagging throughout rather than actually playing so that kinda sucked. I am very, very sure I was going to win that match but it’s still really unsatisfying. Whatever though, ranked is a joke and this system is incredibly exploitable and it’s not like the countless games I lost against all the Rams and Millias with 250 ping that seem to flood US East Celestial felt legit in the least so

I’m a champion.

Now to never play ranked again.

i still think the tower is the best ranking scheme i’ve ever seen in a fighting game but idk it’s probably impossible to edit assholes out of an online fighting game completely

the first problem with the tower is you can pick and choose your opponents; the second problem is the celestial challenge is extremely arbitrary and gameable; the third problem is celestial actually has like 15 different ranks of players crammed into one floor, and you can’t get demoted once youre in, which means the highest rank of the game is functionally no different from the park

And after reaching VIP you can choose to fight on 10 and bully folks which I do not understand at all. Maybe it makes sense if you wanna learn a new character but…go to the park if you want that?

It’s very silly that I can see who my opponent plays but I cannot see their pings. That it shows character level but like…it’s not accurate? Unless the tiny icon next to the numbers is actually a bunch of different icons and I’ve yet to recognize that. Like, you can go up to a station and think you’re getting a level 115 Ky (which usually means they’re gunning for VIP) but then you challenge them and it turns out that number was bullshit and they’re the #2 ranked Ky in the world and they just absolutely destroy you.

Which is fine. I like fighting stronger players. I was way too lazy to try and game the challenge. It’s hard enough getting a match going without trying to find one that’s an Ideal Matchup. But the whole celestial system is very bizarre and unsatisfying, which is a shame since scaling the tower is fun up until that point. I think it also really hampered my growth; I think the top players are mostly fighting up there and not in the park so fighting sets against them wasn’t possible unless I started chasing folks down on discord which I have zero interest in doing, like I wanna fuckin’ talk to people, I’m spending 6 hours a day playing ranked matches against randos because talking to people is exhausting, fuck!!

i think what goes unappreciated in these discussions are the resultant 490,000 or so people who get to play the fighting game without having to worry about getting the shit beaten out of them all of the time. there’s two floors for high level players and there’s nine floors for everybody else. there’s a lesson there

its seriously reality altering to talk about this game or any game as if high level players (that means you, you delightful weirdo) are the only people actually playing the game, the only people for whom these decisions matter

almost certainly the reason this game is doing well is because the netcode and tower system made the game exciting and enticing and immediately playable for the amateurs who do not have weekly tournaments to play in (eg. me)

like i wanna play the game at a high level too but im just not that good! i am happy to see a game offering me a tangible path towards that end that doesn’t depend on me ingratiating myself with the FGC first

I’m not sure that the tower up to celestial is any better than any other ranking system. Like, I think it’s fine, I don’t think it’s any worse really than any other MMR system (is this even an MMR system? it is…right?), but it is definitely bad at the top. and one of the problems is ā€œthe topā€ is very broadly defined here. like, there are a lot of games that have or have had problems at the top of the ladder, but by ā€œtopā€ you’d mean like .5% of the playing population at most. here, you start running into the problems at floor 10, because as hobo noted every celestial player can come play at floor 10 whenever they want for any reason with no consequences. and I really wish we had some kind of official numbers for this, but I would bet that floor 10 + celestial in this game probably encompasses something like 20% of the population at minimum. that’s a huge amount. like, way too high. I don’t know what happened, I am better at this game than I ever thought I’d be, but there is no chance in hell I should be at the highest rank. if the population stays reasonably high, the ranking system stays the same, and you keep playing, I find it very likely you will be floor 10 at some point.
