yeah event horizon is still one of my most memorable theater going experiences ever. part of me kind of hates the movie for it but i can’t deny that it was effective lol. achieved largely because the trailers made it seem like it was gonna be an Alien knockoff, i was very unprepared

fwiw i also really enjoyed alien resurrection and still have a fondness for it, but i do understand why people hate it. there are parts of it that seem to weirdly foreshadow the self-important operatic tone of Prometheus (another movie people hate that i kinda liked), but it is kind of undercut by the whedonness that jeunet could not fully shake off (whedon banter directed by a french guy is just like tonally insane, the effect is … interesting? i guess)

partner wants to skip x-men the last stand and go right to first class, which reminded me she is an unrepentant matthew vaughan fan and matthew vaughan’s trajectory from layer cake to now is bizarre. like a villain fueled by resentment he never got the bond job

the shots of the interior of the jet look much less mary poppins in first class, though

if there is a last stand defender among us please, by all means, log on

bryan singer is an extra in star trek nemesis!! its all connected! the pedophile mafia really dominated the early 2000s with their shit ass movies. Im going to blame it on george lucas wanting to make marion 12 in raiders of the lost ark. blade 2 came out in 2002 and that movie’s awesome though

this is one of the last movies i remember seeing while too stoned to think, which used to be how i watched all movies like this. i don’t think that this is why i stopped just, you know, life stuff, the passage of time. anyway the best thing i can say about it is i didn’t realize until reading reactions to it after it was over that it is, like, a horrible fucking movie. so if you can get intoxicated enough you may not mind it that much.

last stand has no redeeming features, spare yourself. It is never referenced or acknowledged again by any of the other movies

First Class is racist, misogynist trash with terrible costumes. I was promised something gay by all the early reviews but the Xavier/Magneto dynamic of First Class is more like two coworkers that have been in the same room once or twice rather than anything even remotely suggestive.

I will never forget the theater experience of TLS, the dawning realization that this here movie was a true piece of shit. So sad

First Class is also terrible. Days of Future Past however still rules. That creep could make a good Xman, still don’t understand why

I think the only person to direct an xmen movie that isn’t a huge piece of shit is James Mangold, unless there’s something I haven’t heard about him.

X-Men: Last Stand had Juggernaut saying “I’m the Juggernaut, bitch!” and it became a meme on 4chan for a few minutes.

This is my only impression of X-Men: Last Stand.

that was a meme before the movie, that was an early attempt to leverage memes in hollywood.

My mind is blown here.

Not quite enough to make me want to start reading all the X-Men comics (outside of Ed Piskor’s summaries) but close.

the meme came from an overdub of the xmen cartoon that is almost assuredly full of problematic stuff in 2023. Linking it just for historical context since I have not watched this since I was 15.

Yeah I never watched the cartoon either but I had a friend who did. I was just never into big team comic stories. I’m a one superhero per book kind of guy.

I remember being disappointed that the first movie ditched all the costumes from the cartoon/whichever era of x-comics they first showed up in. The costumes are like the coolest part of the whole thing!

I think the magneto flashback scenes in first class are pretty good, everything else about it is forgettable though. Fassbender is just really good in that role imo

Apocalypse is worth watching just as a “these movies need to be more like the 90s cartoon” monkeys paw type situation , and the sheer comedy of occasionally remembering, “hey… That’s Oscar Isaac buried under all that make up…”

oh this is definitely a matthew vaughan movie alright

re: magneto/xavier I was ready to chalk it up to the power of the fujo imagination meeting fassbender but then they both politely reject mystique and mind meld and cry and idk

the standards for this are terrible at any rate, like, these x-men movies have nothing to offer but subtext

i like the part of days of future past where wolverine gets sonic to bust magneto out of the pentagon

The only really good Xmen movie is Logan.

Logan is definitely the Last Jedi of Xmen movies but nerds love it instead of hate it. It’s inexplicable.

trying to remember these movies and drawing a complete blank as to which one The Last Stand was, before suddenly remembering that it was the only on that I saw in theaters as a kid

even my Star Trek Nemesis-loving younger self thought that movie was garbo
