Pretty much every portrayal of The Future in xmen involves mutants being hunted and killed as well, and like there’s multiple mutants who can literally see the future, so everyone is just kind of generally blackpilled about wider society as well
ok X2 is a huge improvement off the bat. instinctively rooting for nightcrawler to assassinate the president, creepy DoE bunker… good
yeah, it should be remembered that pre-MCU capes movies weren’t nearly as funded by the DoD as the post-disney ones. There are no friendly CIA agents working with the Black Panther in the world of the sony xmen movies.
I mean until xmen first class anyway in which everyone joins the CIA in the 1960s and they like stop the cuban missile crisis or something fucking stupid
lmao what!
also OK the white house chief of staff also wants to know where the private school got what appears to be a scifi sr-71, thank you
X2 looks so much better across the board it’s wild
Just read that David Hayter (english voice of Solid Snake) was the screenwriter for the first X-Men and one of three for the sequel. Makes a lot of sense actually.
Also probably the most significant thing imo is that the first X-Men was a pre-9/11, pre-Iraq War 2.0 movie and the rest of them weren’t. You literally can track the shift in the wider culture that resulted from the fallout of those two events throughout the rest of the film series (discounting a couple of the Wolverine movies and probably the Deadpool movies I guess, maybe New Mutants too).
im surprised they let bryan singer make 4 movies revolving so heavily around a school
to quote spider-man i am vindicated re: the jet. lampshade that sucker!
y’all are right that the whole school situation shakes out quickly when the state is directly doing violence to the kids. strongest part of logan and new mutants too
5 if you include Apt Pupil
that one’s basically a soft reboot, so I haven’t really thought of it as a pre-mcu movie
they unfortunately made it a prequel to the original movie in its sequel, yet another horrible reminder that there was a time i cared about the xmen!
omg “have you ever tried not being a mutant?” immediately followed by a cop shooting wolverine followed by a fucking barbecue. this is fantastic, what is tone
.
I think I caught the original X-men movie opening weekend and even then it wasn’t a good movie. X2 in contrast seemed great at the time so glad that it at least seems to remain better than what came before.
i remember struggling to get through the first x-men when i rented it, but then i ended up seeing the second in the cinema and i loved it
You have to keep in mind that a huge amount of X-Men goodwill was that they made Wolverine’s stupid hair work in real life somehow. We were all like holy shit, they did the hair and it doesn’t look stupid. A plus
Oh and they got Patrick Stewart. Between the hair and Patrick Stewart we were all completely sold
I think it also must have been the first big comic book movie after the Joel Schumacher Batman movies. I know people have kind of redeemed those movies but at the time I don’t think anyone really liked them. It was a micro era in which a lot of other genre movies were just kind of weird and schlocky in general. The post-goldeneye pierce brosnan bond movies, alien resurrection, wild wild west, etc. I was kind of underwhelmed by x men BC it lacked spectacle, but the down to earth look of it and script that more or less plays it straight was pretty novel at the time. It’s fun to be a revisionist and reclaim this era as camp, but when that’s all there was it was kind of shitty. Like you’re being played. This is also why people like the first two mummy movies, BC even though they were also ridiculous they felt more like the audience was in on the joke.
i would not describe those you listed as camp except specific performances like uma thurman as poison ivy and jonathan price in tomorrow never dies but i first saw those as a kid so all bets are off
is blade big enough to be big because blade is way more fun than x-men 2000
Oh totally, I forgot that one. Blade was also amazing at the time mainly BC of how unapologetically violent it was lol
