Speaking of Raimi I really hope they get him to do Secret Wars. And he insists on doing a faithful adaptation of the 80s one, featuring as many Oscar winning actors as possible all having to say “battle world” in every scene

I’m almost positive I still have this sitting around in a shoebox someplace. God all the comic books I own are the most early-90s shit ever.
- An incomplete collection of all the “Death of Superman” stuff.
- A few bits from the “Maximum Carnage” storyline
- A basically-complete collection of the clone saga (“Maximum Clonage”)
- A bunch of the Scarlet Spider stuff that followed shortly thereafter
- Some Batman comics with a storyline about a plague in Gotham
- A handful of random issues of Spiderman 2099
- Some issues of Spider Boy when Amalgam comics happened
The local corner candy store/card shop used to have a surprisingly good selection of comic books which facilitated this but once I moved further out into the suburbs you could only find that stuff at dedicated comic book shops and it was harder to convince my dad to get in the car and go.

When the 90s comic boom was at its biggest, not only could I walk down to the Waldenbooks tucked inside of an office building a couple blocks away for my X books, Ghost Rider, and Punisher, but of all places the local rock n roll vintage clothes/fetishwear spot but two blocks away from my apartment opened a legit one room comic shop in the back. I got my deluxe version of X-Men 1 there as well as those early Youngblood issues. My slighter older and more adventurous friend dove into the “other” shelf they had and ended up picking up Faust #1. I’d love to go back in time, since I bet that back shelf was packed with Deadworld, The Crow, and a bunch of other homegrown Calibur titles.

Venture Bros and Orpheus is intentionally NOT Marvel.
If there’s one thread that ties all Marvel things together no matter what medium they move to, it’s a penchant for bombast. Big stories. Big consequences. Despite early Marvel moving the American superhero to consider more character than plot compared to the standards of the day, it really was a focus on what big thing they could do next, and often Stan put notes to that right on the page.
I think that’s why the humor in Marvel movies often feels to trite. All these characters were molded directly from an archetype and to have this vein ‘jokey’ quality slapped onto all of them causes a major loss of identity from characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Doctor Strange, as we move forward. Especially Doctor Strange. The fact that man who’s seen everything he’s seen considers anything weird of funny actually makes less and less sense the more you think about it.
The world of Venture Bros however is heavily informed by that of Marvel, and certainly, it’s ilk. But treating Marvel like it’s father’s generation, and now failing to live up to that standard because of the simple crushing realities of life, and the banality that comes with it superceeded the greater future that was promised from it.
That’s why Orpheus just makes for a better character. There’s no slapped-on humor. Most of the humor that comes from the character is just him, he’s not telling a joke he’s just honestly a Dad with a weird job trying to figure it all out with his group of friends from back in the day. We see so much of Orpheus just going about his day, eating, making the most of things in a way that Marvel just can’t.
So Orpheus isn’t really Marvel at all, he’s the antithesis of anything Ditko could ever create.

Dorks are upset about Sandman’s casting, but cool people are on pins and needles to see if the Col. Sanders cameo from the first issue makes it to screen.

I hope the do it like one of those fake 80s nostalgia things that make a big deal about using practical effects, but instead it’s creating a new wave of nostalgia by using only authentic vintage early 2000s CGI

i was still hoping against all in-universe narrative logic they were going to figure out a way to do the sensible thing and just let daniel kaluuya be the new black panther, but then i learned that due to “scheduling conflicts” he’s not even in the next one, what a rip off
