insofar as the first film was a beautiful mess and i can only imagine the sequel leaning into the ‘mess’ aspect this is completely unsurprising

This was mostly just generic blockbuster action spectacle, so the first trailer was better for sure. Every now and then I’ll see some stories about reactions to test screenings saying that WB execs didn’t like it (which means it must be good) or that it’s actually mostly a detective story, so if any of those are true then this could always just be a case of the trailer just trying to sell the movie as a regular super hero movie. No way to know until it comes out I guess.
I haven’t watched a ton of Reeves’ stuff, but I do recall catching a little bit of the end of the last Planet of the Apes movie on TV a few years ago and being struck by just how different it felt from modern action blockbusters. It felt like it was just a half hour of no dialogue, which would not fly at all today. So I’m interested to see how this movie turns out.
There were teasers for a couple of other DC movies, like Black Adam and The Flash. I’m hoping Keaton Batman is shooting people with his Batmobile left and right with that grin of his. Assuming that’s his batmobile in the last shot, I’ve always loved just how nonsensically long that thing is so I’m glad the camera work looks like it’s going to keep emphasizing that.

As his Planet of the Apes movies go on, they become more and more about the mostly speechless community of motion-capture apes v. the Folly of Warlike, Reactionary Man and/or inter-ape power struggles when a faction wishes to Take Up the Gun To Fight the Man, Thus Mirroring the Folly of the Man and idk the last one might have Woody Harrelson saying “a planet of apes!” out loud and I can name the guy that made his character’s “primitive tactical” for trend knife off the top of my head but it’s maybe kinda a miracle it was made and released? Quiet scenes of apes grunting forever, habituating us to them, our heroes. A gorilla with a FAMAS. Climactic visual mirroring of the end of Apocalypse Now (while pulling back from directly, uh, aping the events) in a way that feels conversational, not look at me, I too saw a thing once! Real intertextuality in this monkey movie, I swear!
As ostensible tentpole franchise blockbusters they’re kinda remarkable. Or at least they get there.

Still hoping Reeves will somehow tie all of this together by making Grodd the final man behind the curtain in The Batman. The man just wants to warn us about the ape menace

Hopeful for this Batman movie because 1) my soul is absolutely drained from a decade plus of the MCU formula and its “humor” 2) he looks kinda like Tommy Wiseau in that one shot of him wearing sunglasses.

Nothing in these PR rollouts is accidental, so I know there was high level discussion about trying to play up what’s going to be a 20 second screen of two people kissing then a close up of grasped hands as though it’s some radical move.
Rob Liefeld of all people did an episode of his podcast right after seeing the premiere, and mentioned all the action stuff in the trailer was just from the film’s opening and was hyped about the celestial attack in the third act, but I can’t see myself bothering with another one of these.
yeah I watched pretty much every single one thru Endgame, was like “ok so that’s over” and have never felt a single impulse to watch one again.
