god, i'm so sorry (superhero-comicbook nonsense)

Man DC has a lot of characters that are really similar. I saw that new Suicide Squad at the drive in last night and spent the whole thing thinking this was some drastic new direction for Shark from the Terrible Trio and Mouse from The Movement.

Also weirdest use of Calendar Man ever.

One billion dollar movie represented by four shabbily dressed people standing in a random formation in a scrub field

occasionally i think i might be being too hard on disney-marvel, but then i remember: no i’m not, it’s shit

(except runaways. runaways was good and had some of the most perfect casting i’ve ever seen in a live action adaptation of anything.)

so actually this is opportune: what are like the good, really nutty kirby pieces to read? i’ve always meant to

the eternals is ancient aliens, but also psychedelic superheroes but also cosmic horror

the fourth world (mister miracle, the forever people, superman’s pal jimmy olsen, new gods) is a grand sweeping saga about gods of absolute good and evil who are always yelling and posing dramatically

the galactus trilogy is a perfect big scale superhero movie in comic form (tip: you can get it dirt cheap in a nice little manga-sized paperback that also includes the wedding of reed and sue richards. plus this version has the proper colours, rather than the drab computer gradients that marvel have started to impose on a lot of reprints of classic material)

I’ve been hoping to come across a Forever People trade, I always loved that Mignola early X-Force issue and had no idea it was a homage, but with Cable’s buds instead of space hippies.

My Kirby vote is for that 2001 series that kept rolling after the movie story line was wrapped, with Machine Man’s introduction. Omac is cool too.

2001 is so next level he’s just unmatched

Kamandi is easily the most batshit thing Kirby has done and its so readable because it isn’t about superheros

fucking kamandi, of course!

i almost listed kamandi, but there’s so much in it that it’s hard to accurately describe. a post apocalypse adventure story with as many ideas as possible put into it?

That’s part of the joy, every single page feels like a treasure trove of bizarro kirby worldbuilding and flights of fancy

no point to all the multiverse nonsense in phase 4 until they let wesley snipes as blade walk out a portal to katana chop the head off the jared leto vampire man
