Piczle Adventure is a picross style puzzle game with too much walking around a map looking for hotspots that indicate a puzzle is here. The puzzles are mostly simple too, designed with notions of what would look neat as a 20x20 sprite intead of designed to be challenging puzzles, though it is a credit that nothing has more than ne solution.

The main character reminds me of Daphaknee sort of on account of bright colors, and once you get to the developer room in the post game, they just berate the hell out of the poor dev and it’s pretty funny.

I appreciate that the game is completely unafraid to just through some shit in – time travel level? Sure, what the hell! The aforementioned completely OP autogun which like, why wasn’t I just using this the whole campaign? Why is it only part of some kind of emergency kit? Because someone only added that gun into the game at the 11th hour, I bet.

the auto-pistol was in TF1, where it had notably much faster lock-on speed but, in the multiplayer-only environment that was the first game, it falls off in modes with without bots to farm because, well, a competent player could just kill you faster than the gun would take to get the fatal amount of lock-ons required

TF2’s arsenal is a bit bigger so holding off the pistol and the hacking knife until the end was a nice surprise for those who knew

Okay now I understand why the moment you get them is given so much gravitas.

I finished Boltgun

it’s fine, I guess?

I think we need to tamp down on the term “boomer shooter” until people really figure out what the hell they think that means

I know self deprecating humor isn’t beloved by all, but I liked the main character calling the programmer vain for assuming the player would want to meet him when you discover the dev room, and when the main character said “you’re not beating the allegations” when he replied that putting in a dev room was good enough for the team that made chrono trigger

The STARS are doomed …
Someone is a traitor.
Everything was plotted from the start, by Umbrella.

Playing the PC port of Resident Evil put out by GOG. Never played this version before, usually try for some variant of the Director’s Cut, so this is exciting and novel. I have always loved door loading sequences in these games, and kind of frowned whenever I would hear about people like modding REmake to make them skippable. But in this version you can just skip them and, boy, you can really just rip through this game when you don’t have to wait for those. Resident Evil is hella fast!!

I ended up working on a project for work for more of the weekend than I had hoped but I did manage a break where I played through world 2 of the GBA port of Mario 3. I’m still team SMW, but it’s not bad.

I’m not big on the updated graphics (of course), or the voice samples but a real save system goes a long way.

I had avoided these when they first came out because the GBC Mario 1 was so claustrophobic with the way the screen was smaller, but so far this feels better. I wonder if losing the status bar means you’re essentially looking at the same real estate on the GBA geometry.

I swore the Switch version had the e-reader functionality included but I haven’t figured that out yet.

It absolutely did when I played it! Maybe from the main menu?

I finished Indika and am curious about the real world gamification of religion. Is there an app somewhere that gives me 10 points for going to the church on 5 consecutive sundays / knowing what a narthex is / killing 5 rival Episcopalians and bringing their pelts?

I was thick headed enough that I didn’t realize the anormal proportions and architecture of the fish factory until the giant sized tuna cans. This was normal, to me:

I liked the game a lot, unfortunately it’s less of a walking sim and more of an Unreal Engine Linear Box Pushing Ladder Moving Downtime game and it has to be the worst genre there is. How can AAA / Naughty Dog fans live like this? There’s a bit at the beginning that’s boring on purpose at the player’s expense, and I still fund its mundanity more compelling than the box pushing stuff later

How much of the humor is at the level of the trailer?

The only humor in the game IMO comes from the aforementioned fish factory + juxtaposition of the austere Dostioevskesque setting and extremely videogame stuff like a pixelated minigame in which you jump on frogs to cross a pond

A few days ago I got into a strange mood and bought and completed two narrative indie games in a single day. They were both in a Steam bundle. It Takes A War and The Remake of The End of the Greatest RPG of All Time. This was kinda like sitting down and eating a jar of cake frosting.

They’re both pretty well-made, decently acted, and the metanarrative gimmicks are decent. There was a time when I’d love these, but I felt awful afterwards. It Takes A War’s metanarrative elements felt grating and when it turned on my camera, I groaned and flipped it off. The Remake et al.'s loveletter to the joy of creation and childhood creativity fell flat for me. I’m not in the right place at all for these. I don’t think I’ll ever be in the right place again. These games are made for me ten years ago.

That said, I do have to say some things good about them. It Takes A War’s depiction of 90’s Counterstrike voice text conversations was pretty much pitch-perfect, and the puzzle elements of The Remake et al were quite enjoyable, enough to get me through the end credits.

I’m also slowly picking my way through Picayune Dreams, a Vampire Survivors-like made by someone whose favorite video games are Vampire Survivors, Yume Nikki and the Touhou shooters. It’s pretty good and I keep coming back to it. I suspect I will be mildly disappointed by whatever plot revelation makes all these story elements come together, but I’m here for it so far.

i’m not so sure of this. i think entering an artists home and finding many unifinished paintings of jesus or maybe some other saints in one corner, then looking over to the other and seeing some kind of home-made sex doll in the bed, was definitely humor, mostly just doing a jacking off motion at the superficial worship i suppose.

elsewhere too, like the extremely pathetic chase sequence, that was actually really funny. escaping on the slowest vehicle possible while a soldier, already established as the worlds worst shot as a joke, tries to wade after you in the snow and take shots at the guy you are running away with.

i think a lot of it is like this? its “funny”, but everything also kind of miserable and pathetic. i’m struggling to bring up the words for it but its a mood i appreciate
