Mina the Hollower sure is a zeldavaniasouls
With a hint of StarTropics.
This was exactly why I played it!
now you have me intrigued
You have to dip your steam deck in water for 30 seconds to unlock the electrocution trinket
tonight i’m thinking about how the gap between now and dragon quest xi coming out is bigger than the gap between mother 2 and jrpgs being invented. anyway, you know how if you play a long enough session in earthbound your dad will call and tell you you should take a break? did you know that can hit in that tiny post-credits sequence where you walk downstairs and answer the door lol
Playing the American FF3 on snes with my linux handheld and really liking it. Gets a little stuttery when scrolling the background, sometimes. I am making tweaks to try to mitigate that, but it isn’t all so bad really.
Just got to Ultros and it is one-hit KOing Terra on the second turn, and I feel like I can’t risk slowing down on the damage output or party-wide healing to revive her. Have to try brute-forcing our way through this part a few more times, before reloading a save maybe.
Finished Titanfall 2. The beginning and end of the game are definitely the weakest parts. But overall not bad, I guess. If I thought harder about it I think I could take issue with more of it but I don’t think it’s worth thinking harder about.
I only got accused of killing Kurt Cobain three times today while playing Marvel Heroes. Well, and counting, I suppose. Better not jinx it.
literally every single day people see my username being “CourtneyLove” on that game, say some variation of you/she killed her husband, why did you kill Kurt, you shouldn’t be allowed to talk cuz you killed your husband… it’s like do you guys ever get tired of this… whenever they deploy that one on me when I’m spitting facts it’s incredible, it’s like, oh you have nothing on me, I’m fucking clean as a whistle, I’m completely correct in my assertions. I’ve inherited a shard of Courtney’s power and it is protecting my spirit like a shield. All it takes to invoke ruinous envy in men’s hearts is to wield her name. I can’t even get like too upset about getting yelled at for two weeks straight. I get to be Miss World when I log on, after all!
Castlevania 1 is…hard. I hate thinking “i recognize that weapon from Vampire Survivors” because I played that first. I do like the format.
Castlevania 3 is pretty good. still really hard. been encouraged to use save states to get past hard parts. These owls are giving me so much grief I can’t get past em. Really pretty for an NES game. And the music!
Tales of Berseria
Tale 1
The game begins in an idyllic starting RPG town in a world plagued by daemons (read: demons). People turn into daemons for some reason. From the get go it is emphasise how much your female lead Velvet is a huge tomboy as she takes care of her sickly younger brother. Multiple people say things like: ‘You’re such a boy’ or ‘Dang if you were a boy I’d [bites lip]’ and then immediately follow it up with ‘But you really should comb your fucking hair’ or ‘but of course it would be weird for me, a woman, to be attracted to another woman!’.
Anyway. Things go bad. Your mentor (and brother-in-law who was married to your now deceased sister), sacrifices your little brother to defeat the daemons. Velvet goes full rage mode and somehow gets ‘daemonised’ but still possesses her humanity, she just gets a huge edgy daemon arm that can eat others. Unfortunately she gets put in daemon jail where she is used as an execution mechanism for other daemons since she now hungers for corpses. 3 years pass and the evil brother-in-law/mentor has created the evil church which now rules everything because there are too many daemons and exorcists are the most valuable thing.
You get jailbroken by a radical sympathiser whose boobs are all the way out. Velvet takes inspiration from this and salvages an outfit that breasts boobily. Sapphic undertones continue when your mysterious helper receives a deathblow and says ‘I ask only that you devour me’. But it turns out she might be our dead sister. Either way we absorb her power and escape with a daemon samurai and an Akihabara witch. Like boobs, we are free to roam.
The game is full of little bits of RPG bullshit which are fun to encounter. An early quest has you trying to hunt down a daemon (formerly a sailor) that is terrorising the nearby town. You find the daemon and after beating it he just rambles on about a corruption plot in town with no concern for the fact that he’s now a lizard man living in a cave. Cutscenes and little optional VN segments are frequent which I like the pacing of so far, especially since you can activate the latter whenever you want. I like Velvet as a sort of unhinged rage monster protagonist and there’s some fun flavour like daemons who transform lose certain aspects of humanity like appetite or pain.
The game is a PS3-ass experience which I am also enjoying. My biggest gripe is really just with the combat which I understand is a divisive element of Tales games generally. Artes combinations seem impenetrable. When actually fighting, you have to memorise each attack’s properties and then chain them according to each enemy. All the artes look the same in the menu with names like ‘gyrating kick’ and ‘fulminating turgemancy’ and I mostly just remember them by how they look which is not something you can quickly reference in the menu. When I fought the lizard man daemon, a tutorial tip came up that said that he is weak to 3 different things. These 3 different things are related to 3 attacks I have and I had to do those 3 attacks in the exact order specified. How the hell am I meant to find this stuff out? The game doesn’t really punish mashing as long as you learn the rules for replenishing the action point resource but I’m worried that I will eventually hit a roadblock where I have to really learn the system to progress. For now, though, it’s a very smooth RPG snack.
i abandoned sherlock nemesis but want to at least speak in favor of how funny the watson bits are. stealing holmes’ secret bottle of bedtime booze to bribe a sex worker to vouch for you to be let in on the illegal turtle races and then rummaging holmes’ stuff again to find valuables to pay off the booksellers turtle racing debts with. after that all watson segments are partially about covering this up and trying to get the stuff you pawned off back without holmes ever finding out.
too bad about the constant lupin riddles tho.
started sherlock vs jack the ripper and its wild how immediately good it is? these two assholes are still funny too and im growing fond of them. now you also play the deduction game that sinking city streamlined and recontextualized as a morality choice
That bit with the auto pistol is kinda neat, though. I mean it’s definitely not challenging, but as a power trip moment near the end, not bad.
Full Quiet Steam runs at your monitors refresh rate. I remember playing it normally a year ago, I must have done something. anyways it is mostly impossible at 2.5x speed. I’ll try the rom later. At least my concerns about “this can’t be right, were right!”
old grey-bearded men in dynasty warriors 9 empires keep asking to marry me
Courtney Love programme coming to Criterion Channel tomorrow.
Oh, you thought Titanium Court was the only fantasy-themed sports-themed match-3 game coming out this year?
I tried this demo and it has real party game energy that reminds me of Dicey Dungeons, complete with a loudmouth host and a gameshow spinner for random events. Finding 2-chains and combos is really important to do anything at all, though, so don’t think you can just blithely match-3 your way through this.
Great I hope it’s on featured so I can ACTUALLY FIND IT IN MY CRITERION APP WITHOUT A SEARCH
